Like many juice vendors---and especially the artisan juice-makers---CopperCreek adds new flavor blends to its lineup from time to time. Awhile back, CopperCreek came up with a tobacco juice---their first tobacco flavor---that was described on site as their twist on RY4. That juice was Twisted Tobacco, which I bought, reviewed, and ranked. As a tobacco blend, it was interesting and pretty good. As an RY4-variant, however, I felt that it failed, in large part because the tobacco element wasn't up to snuff for me, and Twisted Tobacco's low ranking reflected that feeling.
Just recently, CopperCreek came up with their second tobacco juice, called Voodoo. The on-site description says: "Creamy caramel and vanilla, with tobacco undertones." Hmmm, what does that remind you of? Sounds suspiciously like another RY4-variant to me. So, of course, I ordered a bottle. Like all CopperCreek juices, the base is a 40/60 PG/VG blend, so vapor production is stellar. I ordered 18mg nic, my standard concentration these days. Color of the juice is auburn---a medium reddish-brown.
Voodoo is the juice I posted about yesterday, the one I was so excited over and hinted might break into the Top 10. Well, crap, I spoke too soon again. I seem to be fairly even-tempered about juices I don't like much, but I often go over the top initially for juices I do like. Then I come to my senses, as it were. Voodoo is good, but not Top 10 good.
Despite that retraction of excessive enthusiasm, however, I like Voodoo. I like it a lot, actually. What Twisted Tobacco was supposed to be (but wasn't, in my earlier estimation), Voodoo is---namely, a worthy entry in the RY4-variant category.
How does Voodoo improve on Twisted Tobacco? Well, I'll tell you, but first a small confession: Often, I can't discern the flavoring sources used in juice blends. With caramel, for instance, I usually can't tell whether it's from Lorann, Capella, or Perfumer's Apprentice. Sometimes I can, but mostly I can't. As an end user, all I'm sure of is that one caramel tastes different from another. So, I'm unable to report whether the flavorings used in Twisted Tobacco and Voodoo are from different source suppliers, or if they're the same source ingredients mixed in different proportions. I am able, however, to discuss the end result.
Twisted Tobacco is balanced---tobacco, caramel, and vanilla have equal weight in the blend and meld into a single overall taste experience. By contrast, Voodoo throws balance and unity right out the window in favor of individual flavor impact. In Voodoo, caramel is the star, taking center-stage and luxuriating in the spotlight. Thankfully, though, tobacco and vanilla are more than mere back-up singers. Each weighs in, adding harmonies to the caramel melody. The tobacco base provides a dark and complex low end that has a nice bite, while the vanilla goes soprano, taking care of the high end. Each flavor enhances the other two, although vapers who love caramel-rich RY4s will be happiest.
This is why I went so gaga after initially atty-dripping Voodoo yesterday. I don't mean that the individual flavors are intense, but the overall flavor impact is stunning. Lots of "Wow!" factor. CopperCreek's doesn't offer an option for "extra flavor," so this is the standard mix, but more flavor would probably be overkill and ruin the juice. As is, the flavor experience is more than ample.
Voodoo is a cousin of Vaperite VR4, my all-time favorite RY4-variant, another extremely caramel-rich juice. The caramel in VR4 is liquid-like and gooey, while the caramel in Voodoo is more, well, chewy. Neither is particularly sweet, but both are very rich. Another difference is that VR4's tobacco is clean and bright, whereas Voodoo's is similar to Twisted Tobacco's---dense and dark, with some spiciness. I know that Vaperite uses natural tobacco extract macerated in-house, but Copper Creek's tobacco flavorings are not stated on their site. I'd guess that at least some Tobacco Absolute is used because of the "Bulgarian" darkness of the tobacco flavor.
Is Voodoo better than VR4? I don't think so today, but ask me again next week. It is good enough, however, to earn a spot in the second 10 of the Big List. Since I've been vaping both Voodoo and Twisted Tobacco for an entire day to compare and contrast them, an unexpected side effect is that I while I like Voodoo's extremism, I now appreciate Twisted Tobacco's balance more than I did before. As a result, I think I'll move it up some in the next revision of the rankings.
Voodoo's Ranking: #16
Category Groups: Caramel-Rich, Variants (non-typical)
Please keep in mind that CopperCreek Voodoo is definitely not a "classic RY4." It's an RY4-variant all the way, right out to the edge, and thus, not necessarily to every RY4-lover's taste. If you like stretching the envelope, however, Voodoo does that very well.
I'll wait to post another update/revision of the rankings/categories Big List until after I do a couple more new reviews in the days ahead.
