ECSI (ecsiinc.com) is among the older juice vendors on the internet. Their Kick Juice line of eliquids dates back aways, to earlier days of vaping, when liquids were a bit different than now (some would say better).
Rather than buy
Toasted Toffee Kick Juice from ECSI as eliquid, I purchased a 10ml bottle of their custom flavoring concentrate of the same name (for sale on their site right next to the eliquid version) and mixed up a DIY batch of my own juice---a 70/30 PG/VG blend at 18ml nic strength. Color of the liquid is pale bronze. Testing was done in my usual manner, by dripping into a bonut-modded Joye LR atty and loaded into a homemade syringe dual-coil carto-tank, both 1.5 ohms and run at about 4.2 volts.
A couple of questions relevant to the RY4 thread are:
What constitutes an RY4-variant? Where do we draw the line between an RY4-variant and a simple tobacco blend that uses either or both of the other primary RY4 ingredients? Many vendors sell tobacco blends that incorporate either caramel or vanilla or both. Are all these caramel tobacco or vanilla tobacco blends RY4-variants? I would say that some are, but many---even most---are not.
My reasons for that opinion are far from scientific, and perhaps not even rational. To me, RY4s have (or "should" have) a characteristic flavor signature. Even though the many RY4s available in the marketplace vary quite widely, they should share a common flavor profile, at least in theory. In the real world, though, RY4s are all over the map, both hither and yon, from the sublime to the ridiculous. Sometimes, about all that different RY4s seem to have in common is the fact that their label reads "RY4." Conversely, certain juices that don't carry the fabled RY4 moniker are more faithful to the classic RY4 flavor profile than other so-called RY4s. Raf-a-licious from AVE is a case in point. Despite being an RY4-variant, Raf-a-licious tastes more like a classic RY4 than a "variation" on RY4. Hell, it tastes more like classic RY4 than most RY4s.
So, I have two criteria for an RY4-variant.
1. It cannot be named RY4.
2. It must taste like RY4.
The second criterion---tasting like an RY4---can occur in one of two ways---either it's obviously emulating the RY4 flavor profile, or it is subtly reminiscent of RY4s.
That vague two-point definition has lots of wiggle room, but it definitely excludes many of the Caramel Tobaccos or Vanilla Tobaccos currently available in the eliquid marketplace. Which ones? Well, I don't have a list, but if you gave me a blended tobacco juice of either type---with caramel or vanilla added to a tobacco base---I could tell you after just a couple of tokes whether it's an RY4-variant or just another flavored tobacco blend.
Toasted Toffee passes the acid test for me. It isn't named "RY4," but it's definitely reminiscent of RY4s. Ergo, it
is an RY4-variant. And a darned good one, too. Case closed.
Toasted Toffee is the third RY4-variant I've reviewed recently. The other two were Moondrop RY42 and Alien Visions Raf-a-licious. All three are terrific, top-notch juices that honor the history of RY4s and contribute to its legacy.
Toasted Toffee is also the third juice out of all the RY4s and RY4-variants I've ever vaped that contains a sour element, like Janty RY4 and Raf-a-licious, making the juice a sweet-sour concoction. Here the sourness isn't as pronounced, because Toasted Toffee adds a third element: a slight saltiness. As a result---unlike Janty and Raf, which provide a wonderful alternating balance of sweet-sour---Toasted Toffee Kick Juice offers a trio that operates in equilateral harmony: sweet-sour-salty. It's a delicious combination that seasons the tobacco and toffee flavors.
A good tobacco base is a requirement for a high ranking from me, and Toasted Toffee has that. The tobacco is not quite as exotic and unique as Moondrop's, but neither is it as squeaky clean as Raf-a-licious. It falls midway between the two, sort of clean but sort of exotic, and nicely toasted. I approve heartily. I can't taste any vanilla, but this juice is definitely caramel-rich. That's what you get on inhale---good tobacco and yummy caramel. Then on exhale, the trio of sweet-sour-salty shows up to tickle the palate and leave a deliciously lingering aftertaste.
I'm starting to get spoiled. These three RY4-variants are not only among the best juices I've tried recently, they're among the best RY4s
ever. Raf-a-licious is the most classic, while Moondrop RY42 is the most eccentric, with Toasted Toffee Kick Juice in the middle. I'll use the adjective
idiosyncratic.
