The 5ml bottle of Janes RY4 Kick Liquid I purchased from ESCI contains a pale gold-colored liquid in an uncertain nic strength and base blend. I say uncertain nic strength because the choices were Low, Medium, High, and Extra Strength. I ordered the extra strength, but one never really knows what that means: 24mg? 30mg? 32? 36? The juice tastes like 24mg to me. No base blend was specified, but I suspect that the juice is high-VG, partially because of the thicker viscosity, but also because one listed ingredient is water, which would be unnecessary in a mostly-PG juice. Testing was done by dripping into a 2.5 ohm Joye SR 510 atty powered by a VAMO set to 9 watts RMS.
Way back in November of 2011, I reviewed the DIY flavoring called
Janes Toasted Toffee Kick Juice. Id read on various threads that it was very much like an RY4, and I liked it. That kicked off a lively debate on the thread, and eventually I was persuaded that Toasted Toffee should be left off
The Big RY4 List, because it wasnt enough like an RY4 to qualify.
Recently I visited the ECSI site to order some Toasted Toffee as a retail pre-mixed liquid, since someone (I forget who) told me that the retail liquid version was different from the DIY flavoring, and I wanted to see for myself. I was surprised to find RY4 listed among the available juices---it had never been offered before, to my knowledge---so I ordered a 5ml bottle for testing and review.
Heres the description from the ECSI product page:
RY4 is similar to Toasted Toffee. A Light tobacco base, with a touch of caramel finish. This has been extremely popular, and we brought it in due to heavy demand. No mention of vanilla, but who knows what that implies?
In past weeks on the thread, Ive been focused on Classic RY4s. Well, this one blows that right out of the water. From the very first vape,
Janes RY4 Kick Liquid struck me as an extremely Custom RY4. In fact, its unlike any other RY4 Ive ever vaped---not conflicting with them, but standing apart, quite on its own. Bright and sharp, but veering very far from the Classic flavor profile.
Whats it like? Tobacco dancing with caramel, certainly, but something else as well. My brain kept picking up hints of other flavors besides those two. Now, that doesnt necessarily imply the actual presence of other unstated flavorings. Perhaps the tobacco base itself is spicy, although I doubt that. Whatever the source, theres a lot going on in this juice, flavor-wise. Those mystery flavor spicy hints are not off-putting in the least, however, and Im comfortable that the overall taste experience is still acceptably within the Custom RY4 Universe.
I like Janes RY4 very much, but it sure isnt your Grandfathers Buick. Its bold, stimulating, and unusual, but also quite compelling. Not even close to an all-day-vape, though---too stimulating for that. Janes RY4 makes me want to create a new category for Exotic or Spicy RY4s, but most RY4s that would fit under those headings are lousy (unlike this one), so Ill simply add it to the Distinctive/Atypical group and let it go at that.
If you like normal RY4s, forget Janes RY4. On the other hand, if you appreciate adventurous RY4s and want to walk on the wild side, grab a bottle while you can. I dont think youll be sorry, at least Im not. I just wish I knew exactly whats in this juice.
Because its so distinctive and non-standard, Im not sure how to grade Janes RY4. Ill play things safe and give it a B, which is not so high as to challenge more typical but superb RY4s, and not so low that Im withholding the respect it deserves.
