The two 10ml bottles of RY4 I purchased from BestEcig (a Chinese vendor)---one in all-PG, the other in mostly-VG, and both at 24mg nic strength---contained liquids of identical color: a very pale gold transparency. Nose of each juice was very slight but pleasing. Testing was done by dripping into a 2.5 ohm Standard joyetech 510 atomizer powered by a VAMO set to 7 watts RMS.

BestEcig is one of numerous Chinese online ecig/juice vendors that are not particularly well-known on ECF. HealthCabin, EastMall, GreenhouseOne, and Heaven’sGifts are better known around here. I wanted to see how an “off-brand” Chinese RY4 might compare, so I ordered two 10ml bottles for testing.

Before purchasing, I emailed BestEcig to ask whether their liquids were out-sourced from a large wholesale juice manufacturer or made in-house. I saw no point in purchasing more re-labeled Dekang, Joye, or Hangsen RY4, since I already have more than enough of all those.) BestEcig replied promply, assuring me that all their liquids were custom formulated in-house by their own juice mixologists. OK.

The price wasn’t particularly inexpensive at $2.65 for each 10ml bottle plus $5 overall shipping (the really slow kind, which took a month to get to Oregon). Bought in larger quantities (up to 500ml bottles), however, cost per ml can be brought down into the mid-20¢/ml range, unless one opts for the faster and much more expensive EMS shipping.

First thing I noticed upon opening the package were the odd bottles, which weren’t labeled, by the way, except for a generic BestEcig sticker indicating that they contained eliquid. Figuring out which bottle was which RY4---the all-PG or mostly-VG---was easy, though, because of the thicker viscosity of the VG. The bottles were opaque plastic with pop-off caps that revealed the same kind of tips one gets with a tube of superglue, where you have to snip off the ends with scissors. Seemed a bit unusual for eliquid, but I guess BestEcig got a great deal on a zillion of those empty 10ml glue bottles. I transferred the liquids to standard 10ml ecig dropper-top bottles and labeled each one.

Price and weird bottles aside, how good is the RY4? Well, first off, BestEcig’s RY4 is Classic Chinese RY4 all the way. Since Classic RY4s---especially those created by the Chinese, which is most of them---share a tighter flavor profile and less variation from one maker to another than Custom RY4s, I found BestEcig RY4 to be a bonafide member-in-good-standing of the Classic Chinese RY4 Club. If we can call any Classic RY4 “unique,” probably only Janty RY4s qualify for that label, but then Janty RY4s are only half-Chinese. All the rest are remarkably consistent (which is to say, similar): Dekang, Hangsen, Joye, Keemer, and the house brands from HealthCabin and GreenhouseOne. To that list we can now add BestEcig RY4.

The highest-rated Classics on The RY4 Report Card are Janty RY4s, Bloog or SmokelessImage Volt RY4s, Halo Tribeca, Vapor’sKnoll OuR-Y4 (formerly Vapor.....), and VaporTalk Dulcis---all of which get an “A” grade from me. The lowest-rated Classic is GreenhouseOne RY4, which I’ve judged as a “B-.” Not too shabby, actually. BestEcig RY4 belongs right in the middle. I’ll give it a very comfortable “B

If you like Classic RY4s, you will like BestEcig RY4. It’s right down the middle of the Classic profile. Lean but tasty, not overly sweet or rich, but quite satisfying, and a very nice vape. No nuts, no sourness, no off-tastes, no weird flavorings. Just straight-ahead Classic RY4. What’s not to like about that?

Bill, again much earlier, Hellen A Handbasket and I were searching out 'cream' flavors.. Hellen had had one early on and never found any like it, until BestEcigs. True cream flavor - most others ranged from milky to sour cream to cottage cheese ;) and I can imagine that true cream as being the 'cream' note in the caramel cream part of an RY4.

Bill... and ry4 experts... I want to do an ry4... my two favorite non-classics were BWB and nHaler's rynot... I liked that stronger tobacco and very little sweetness... I like classic a lot and I am happy with a dulcis, ikenvape or even a dekang... but looking for one most like bwb's... like nhaler's but a tad stronger... any suggestions?

LT,

Nothing is remotely like BWB RY4. Nothing. Period. End of story.

That said, you might try some CrystalELiquid RY4 Double Tobacco. While not a replacement for BWB RY4, it heads off in the same direction. Stronger tobacco, with sweetness provided mainly by the tobacco flavoring rather than the caramel/vanilla. Also, MOV Full Virginia Flake RY4 (NET-based) is in the same vein, but calmer and less bright.

Glad you tried the Bestecig RY4, Bill. It is definitely my favorite "Classic RY4" flavor profile. I have found that I enjoy the flavor of the PG version the most on SS mesh. The flavors really come together perfectly. Silica messes with this juice and prevents all the flavors in the juice from coming together and forming that amazing caramel flavor effect. The VG versions affect the flavor in the same way I think. Originally they only offered the PG version.

RY4 can be a really delicate flavor and this is one of those. Speaking of delicate, I recently stored some Mr Vape RY4 in a glass bottle I had a NET RY4 in. Bad idea. Even though I washed the bottle out a few times, there must have been a tiny residual amount because it totally ruined 20mls of the MrVape Ry4.

Sero,

When I began this thread in June 2011, I preferred Custom RY4s to Classic RY4s. Of course, those two genre designations hadn't yet been coined. That clarification came later. At the time, I liked tasting the caramel and vanilla as distinct flavors, which is one of the hallmarks of Custom RY4s. Along the way of the past two years, however, I developed a kind of appreciation for the striking unity of flavor in Classic RY4s. I say “a kind of appreciation” because it is less a love of the singular RY4 flavor than a burning curiosity about how that unity of diverse flavors is achieved.

Oh, I like Classic RY4s quite a bit. They are, after all, the “reference standard,” RY4 at its truest and most pure. But, presented with two different RY4s---one a stunning Classic RY4 with sparkle and subtle singularity of balanced flavor, and the other a terrific Custom RY4 with richer and more individualized flavor elements---and forced to choose just one to vape, I’d have a hard time choosing. I think I’d probably pick the Custom RY4 about 60% of the time. 3 out of 5 isn't overwhelming, but it does reveal the bias of my palate.

In other words, while I think that Classic RY4s are amazing juices and rank near the top of the eliquid world as stunning achievements, I’m still drawn somewhat more to Custom RY4s. Not all, by any means---I tire quickly of the wilder ones, those that stretch the flavor profile too far from the basic trinity of tobacco, caramel, and vanilla (with nuts optional).

Were I an all-day-vape kind of person, I think I’d be drawn more to Classic RY4s, and especially to BestEcig RY4, because of its calm, even-tempered nature and wonderful subtlety. For better or worse, though, I’m a juice bumblebee and stimulation junkie, flitting from one juice nectar to another every two minutes. So, for instance, although I experience Janty RY4s as extraordinary juices, in the long run I'm actually drawn more to something like VaporTalk Dulcis, which leans slightly toward the sweeter, more distinct Custom profile, even though I still consider Dulcis to squeak in just under the wire as a Classic.

The upshot of all this is that I appreciate knowing that some readers and participants of this thread do indeed love Classic RY4s. Often those individuals are vapers who started much earlier than I did and thus began vaping RY4s when Classics were the only choice, back before the evolutionary split that spawned Custom RY4s and permanently altered the RY4 Universe, bifurcating it into two intertwined strands of RY4 DNA.

RY4 aficionados of longstanding experience---such as Kent C, you, and others---are invaluable to this thread. Thanks for posting.

What a shame that your MrVape RY4 was sullied. Oh well, you can always order more…

It's true, indeed I've largely ignored custom Ry4 for some time now, unlike bill here, I'm much more of a stick with a flavour and vape it all day every day till the bottles dry kinda guy, for me only classic RY4 will fulfil my criteria. Occasionally I'll splash out on something special though, perhapes a good Titan fluid, an ENjuice RY4 or some halo tribelica (no its not classic, I don't care what you say!).

But my mainstay will be some huge 100ml or bigger bottle tubs of Hangsen or Dekang. Bought in bulk it's often remarkably cheap and that I like the basic core components of classic Ry4 works very well in my favour.

Indeed for the last 4 months or so I have solidly vaped nothing but Hangsen RY4, PG at 18mg on my reo. With just one deviation to a new vendor named bumblebee eliquid, which I might look at in depth a little later on (I wasn't inspired by it I'm afraid and had no real need to rush to the boards to talk about such a dull juice sadly).

Still on its way (and possibly even today) I'll have some vape mail, an itaste MVP, kangerPro tank and some Custom made grizzwalds Ry4, which hopefully should see a favourable write up of a custom Ry4 again from me. Maybe!

Yeah, I can live on RY4 alone, but I am always alternating between my favorite classics and customs. I lean towards classic mostly but alternating between a few juices keeps me from getting tired of it.

By the way, has anyone tried G2 Vapor's RY4, caRnY4? I have been hearing some buzz about it....I imagine it is a custom.

That's another one I haven't heard of before. The only place I can find it for sale is at ElectronicStix. The description leaves little doubt that caRnY4 is a Custom RY4, what with flavor notes like funnel cake and kettle corn. Might be great, but $17.95 plus shipping is a little rich for my blood just for the sake of a review. If anyone has some G2Vapor caRnY4, mail me a sample and I'll review it.

I'm ordering up some Ahlusion Wild Wood vanilla and Car-Mal Mambo today. I LOVE Wild wood's clean, nutty, slightly nutty flavor... Wondering if I can come up with a more traditional Ahlusion RY4??? And... it should burn especially clean- which I absolutely require. I cant wait to experiment. I'm comfortable knowing WW tobacco won't over-power the caramel & vanilla; I can ad a few drops of Vecchio if the tobacco gets lost. Wish me luck! Send out a search party if you don't hear from me in a few days...

Though on the subject of classic cheap RY4's if I had to choose, I think I'd opt for a Hangsen base. DK will favour those who like a strong tobacoo base, its slightly darker, more pungent and less crisp over a Hangsen. Whilst I'm not 100%, I belive janty RY4 and probably joyetechs RY4 all work from a Hangsen base.

There's a trademark crispness and a morish clarity to Hangsen. A beatufilly light RY4 which has been blended to near perfection. Pure Chinese juice with nothing added and nothing taken away, it is sweet on its high notes and then drifts into a taboco vanillia as you exhale. At times, the juice almost leaves the feeling of pure crystallised sugar on the teeth, a feeling I get when I have a proper Belgium waffle (and I do mean proper here, cheap ones won't do) in a true Belgium waffle you get these wonderful crunchy little bits of crystal sugar in the occasional bite, it has an extraordinary texture sensation when mixed witht he waffle batter and of course some pure canadian maple syrup.

Whilst my analogy up there is a touch tenuous I grant you, that feeling, of that sugar on your teeth? Hangsen RY4 has that for me.

It's smooth, ever so crisp and light. It's blended with the core componets and nothing more is required. A pale gold liquid which was made for all day vaping IMO.

Zombite,

I haven't a clue as to whether Janty and JoyeTech RY4s use a Hangsen base. Not only do I not know, I can't even form an opinion. Nothing would surprise me, however, about invisible (to us, anyway) collusion between these major Chinese juice manufacturers.

Well, once again you demonstrate your uncanny ability to describe flavors and the subtleties of the vaping experience. You nailed it, my friend. Smooth, crisp, and light. Oh yes. And the sugar coating on the teeth thing? Perfect. Interestingly, all this is more apparent to me in the DIY RY4 I have from Hangsen Essence RY4 flavoring concentrate than in the Hangsen retail RY4 juice. Both have all those qualities, of course, but it's more obvious to my palate with my DIY version.

And yes, although I'm not an all-day-vape guy, I can imagine being one, and Hangsen RY4---either retail or DIY---would be a prime candidate if I were. The other all-day-vape competitor in RY4s that quickly comes to mind would be DIY RY4 made from FlavourArt Legend flavoring concentrate. HS and FA have a different quality of sweetness---Hangsen's is softer, with an airier lilt, while FlavourArt's is a tad sharper and darker. While that might shift one's preference either way, I think the gentler tone of Hangsen's sweetness lends itself slightly better to prolonged vaping. Imagining any of the Janty RY4s as an all-day-vape is more of a stretch for me, because of Janty's complexity. Lots going on there that might eventually cause palate exhaustion.

[Note: In this context, both Hangsen and FlavourArt DIY RY4s should be mixed very lean, as I've finally learned to do these days. Keep the percentage of flavoring concentrate used to a bare minimum. No more than 5-7% in the mix.]

Economics is another potential factor. Both Janty and JoyeTech RY4s tend to be pricey, while Hangsen retail RY4 can be acquired from numerous Chinese vendors in large quantities at much lower cost, relatively speaking. I just bought a 50ml bottle of Hangsen retail RY4 from VaporBreak for $6.76 shipped. In DIY, of course, both Hangsen and FlavourArt RY4 can be dirt-cheap, assuming that one buys sufficiently large quantities of PG/VG bases and strong liquid nic. I have a gallon each of PG and VG, plus 2 liters of 100mg/ml liquid nic, so my unit cost/ml is very low. A single 10ml bottle of Hangsen Essence RY4 or FlavourArt Legend RY4 concentrate is only about $6 and will make 140ml of DIY juice. Even at 24mg nic strength, my cost for a 30ml bottle is less than $2.50.

In my case, a 30ml bottle of RY4 will last virtually forever (or until the juice succumbs to Alzheimer's and goes bad), because I have more than 130 RY4s and don't vape RY4 constantly. For an all-day-vape person going through 3-4ml of a single juice every day, however---whether RY4 or another juice---DIY becomes extremely cost-effective.

RY4 Frenchy is almost complete :D, I have sent out a bottle for thoughts..... RY4 Frenchy is my Janty DK clone I think I about got it 98% close. I have been testing at 3ml and I sent out 6ml so I had a touch more tobacco but we see what the thoughts will be. RY4 Frenchy will be ready after this last test and if anyone wants some let me know so I can order more bottles.

Passerbyeus sent me a 6ml bottle of his RY4 Frenchy in 18mg nic strength and I received it on Monday of this week. I filled up a Vision clearomizer Yesterday and have almost vaped 3 mls already! I normally don't vape more than 1ml or so a day from ALL juices combined. This stuff is really growing on me - the flavor profile is just as passer described. Very close to Janty DK series, all 3 flavor components blend as one, as a good Classic RY4 should. About the only difference to me is the sour notes are not as pronounced in Frenchy as they are in Janty.

Passer, great job creating this classic RY4. Do you take re-orders? LOL.

Whilst not Ry4 and probably not belonging in here, just wanted to post up that I've ordered some chivilary juice from house of liquids here in the uk / Ireland. I simply had to, the description alone is beyond any previous E juice I've ever come across.

Organically grown, pesticide free tobacoo leaf, steeped in PG / VG and extracted out and steeped in an oak Scottish single malt whisky barrel for 30 days before being bottled up.

My goodness that sounds good doesn't it? Like the difference between a Boulanger and a brute in champagne terms perhaps. I have quite an appreciation for e-liquids and equally for single malts, mix two of my favourite things and magic could indeed happen, I shudder with excitement the thought of what these guys might do with an Ry4. Still, lets wait and see, I've not even vaped the stuff yet, should be with me tomorrow though. I have an unused i-clear 30 clearo on standby for it!

So what is the difference between RY4s and Vermillion River KY4? I love the KY4 but would like a bit more caramel. So far, I haven't found a caramel I like to even add a drop.

That question is far too vast in scope to address in a single post. Read the whole thread and you'll know. LOL. The short answer is that KY4 is VermillionRiver's version of a Custom RY4.

Zombite,

This may be old news to you, but... If you haven't seen it, check out the Natural Tobaccos thread. It's huge---three times as long as our thread here---but it will give you the skinny on tobacco juices made using NET (Naturally Extracted Tobacco) rather than synthetic, lab-based tobacco flavorings.

House of Liquid is the top European NET vendor, along with U.S. vendors such as Ahlusion, GoodEJuice, Heather'sHeavenlyVapes, MountainOakVapors, QuickNic, VapeRite, Want2Vape, MyVapeJuice, ThePlumeRoom, etc.

Many NETs are made from organic, pesticide-free tobacco, but not all. Steeping the extract for a month in an oak Scottish single malt whisky barrel may be particular to HoL Chivalry, but it's in the same general direction as other Aromatic NETs. Aromatics adds flavors to the maceration before extraction rather than after, so the effect is a more subtle infusion, rather than a tacked-on jolt of flavor. This technique has always been used by NET vendors, since it allows the use of "real" ingredients or natural elements, but its use seems to be increasing.

Thanks bill, I'll take a look over there and pop down my thoughts on the juice once I've tested it. It's actually going to be my first foray into NET juice, so I'm still new to the whole idea.

Interesting too about the barrel steeping, I look forward to seeing just how much of a difference that makes to the juices flavour if indeed any.

My main concern about NET is that really, its been a long time since I wanted anything just tobacco flavoured, sure when I first started vaping I'd have loved for straight up, real tobacco like NET, but now? I've vaped RY4 (occasionally over flavours too! Shock horror!) for well over a year now (closer to two) and as you know, RY4 is very much a Vapers flavour, its not something any trading all cigarette, pipe or cigar can really attest too. So going back to straight up tobacco is going to be an experience indeed.

Z.,

I go back and forth about the "straight tobacco flavor" thing. I've always got one or two straight tobacco NET juices loaded and ready to vape in my daily stable, but the much larger percentage of tobacco juices I keep at arm’s length are blends that use tobacco as a base for other non-tobacco flavors. In Classic RY4s, for instance, the tobacco base is usually neutral and doesn’t stand out or call attention to itself. That’s frequently not the case with NET blends, where tobacco is not only the base flavor, but often the star.

Natural Tobacco Extracts come in all kinds: from single-leaf “varietal” tobaccos (Burley, Latakia, Perique, Virginia, et al) to more complex blends, such as cigar and pipe extracts (Cuban, Cavendish, etc.). NETs cover a wide range of flavors even in the pure or straight extracts. Simpler, more one-dimensional extracts are usually combined to make more sophisticated NET retail juices. [Note: Tobacco Absolute (TA) and its cousin Tobacco Extract (TE) are in their most common forms proprietary commercial products that, while made from real tobacco, are generally not classed with NETs, which are usually filtered macerations (either cold or heat-assisted) or steam distillations.]

Sometimes NET juice blends are aromatics, where the other flavorings are added before extraction. For instance, adding pulped cherries or crushed blueberries to the macerated liquid with the tobacco leaves before steeping will infuse the flavor of the actual fruits with the tobacco flavinoids after filtering. Same with cocoa or vanilla beans and with spirits such as whiskey or rum. The real thing can be added directly to the maceration. Other times NET blends are the more typical non-aromatics, where non-tobacco flavors are added during mixing as flavorings or concentrates, whether natural or synthetic.

If I were to consider the entire group of vendors who sell NET juices---roughly 25 or so---most of them sell some NET tobacco flavor juices made from pure tobacco extracts with no other flavors added, whether pre- or post-extraction. Most also sell NET blends. All these vendors sell other juices made from synthetic, lab-based flavorings. With few exceptions, that's how their eliquid lines started out, offering a more typical selection of synthetic tobacco flavor blends (sometimes called arti-bacco, for artificial tobacco), fruits, bakery/desserts, drinks, etc.

NET vendors such as GoodEJuice (GeJ) in its House-Brewed Natural Tobacco line and Want2Vape in its Premium Line, tend to specialize in authentic (meaning straight) tobacco flavors. House of Liquid would be in this group also. At the other end of the scale is Heather'sHeavenlyVapes (HHV), a very popular NET vendor. While HHV has a couple of straight tobacco NET flavors, the majority of their NET selection is blends, either sweeter dessert types or exotics. In many HHV blends, tobacco is simply one component among many flavorings, rather than the star. For my money, the top NET vendor is Ahlusion, which excels at both types, straight and blended.

NETs can be made at home quite easily. For instance, my own home-brewed Skydancer extract was made from all-natural Native American cigarettes of the same name. The extract is mild, sweet, and smoky. Two packs of Skydancer cigarettes yielded enough extract to flavor 600ml of finished DIY juice. At least one vendor---MyVapeJuice---is now selling NETs in extract form for DIY use. Other vendors may follow MVJ’s lead.
