The Really Big RY4 Roundup (long)

I've been waiting over a month for Janty RY4-X (Classic Series) to come back in stock. Still have yet to try it.

One of my staple vapes is DIY Flavorshack Holy Holy Grail RY4. Surprised to see it mid range on your lists. It's the only RY4 I have tried. I got some Heavenly tobacco from DIY when I started vaping this year and noted a hint of apple. I got some caramel flavoring from them and added it to a DIY batch. Liking that I tried the RY4.

I just received some RY4 from Open Source Vapor. It has steeped a week and think it needs some more time before I review it. It uses TA for the tobacco flavor. I little more perfumy than I like. Steeping has helped so we shall see.

I just re-sampled some DIY Flavorshack Holy Holy Grail RY4. To me, it's an average Custom RY4. More to the point, it tastes like a homemade DIY juice more than a superbly crafted retail juice, at least to my palate. Oh sure, the three fundamental and required flavors of RY4---synthetic tobacco, caramel, and vanilla--- are present, but the end result isn't magical, just sort of OK. Well, that's an RY4 that deserves to get a C grade.

You write, "It's the only RY4 I have tried." Am I reading that correctly? You've tried only one RY4, and it's the DIY Flavorshack Holy Holy Grail RY4? If that's true, then you have no basis for comparison with other RY4s. For all you know, other RY4s could be the nectar of the gods. Try an RY4 from the A group, such as MrVape, Mister-E-Liquid, Butterfly's, or Indigo Classic. I think you might be surprised.

I'm not suggesting that you shouldn't enjoy DIY Flavorshack Holy Holy Grail RY4. Any juice we like is a good thing. Who cares what someone else thinks of it?

The Big RY4 Report Card

The grades given for these retail RY4s are my opinion only. They are also current judgments and may differ from grades I gave in the past. So please understand that if you base a buying decision solely on this list, you might end up getting an RY4 that I like rather than one you’ll like, since my tastes and palate are unlikely to match yours perfectly---in some cases, not even remotely. Conversely, you may like an RY4 to which I gave a low grade.

Within each grade, the RY4s are listed in alphabetical order. This kind of judging is ridiculous enough without splitting hairs or nit-picking between RY4s within the same grade.

All-in-one RY4 pre-mixed DIY flavorings---with mix percentages, Report Card, vendor links, and review posts

Mixing Percentages
The key to making good DIY RY4 from Pre-Mixed RY4 flavorings and concentrates is knowing how much (or rather, how little) flavoring to use. Flavorings require a higher percentage; concentrates work at lower percentages. Use too much of either and you will ruin the juice. I cannot stress this strongly enough. Start out mixing lean. Then---if necessary---add more flavoring very sparingly. Test-vape after each small addition of flavor. Keep in mind that the flavors will “bloom” with steeping---a DIY RY4 that seems to lack flavor when new may magically mature into full-flavor after two weeks, so exercise both patience and restraint.

When making a small bottle of DIY RY4 (6mls or less) using a very concentrated flavoring, adding even two drops to an existing mix can be enough to wreck the flavor profile. Increase the flavoring only one drop at a time. Remember: Less is best, and more is not necessarily better. Err on the side of using too little flavoring rather than too much! Below are my recommended percentages for different brands of RY4 flavorings:

FlavourArt Legend and Hangsen Essence go back and forth in my estimation as Best Classic RY4 all-in-one DIY flavorings. Right now, FlavourArt gets the nod from me. By the way, if you see FlavourArt’s RY4 advertised without the word “Legend,” that’s OK---it’s the same flavoring.

Want2Vape RY4 remains, in my estimation, the best Custom RY4 all-in-one DIY flavoring. It’s not as popular as TFA RY4 Double and doesn’t have the spicy kick of Azure Vaping RY4.5, but I appreciate how smooth it is. W2V RY4 is also made with natural tobacco extract, which is a plus in my book.

Thanks for the kind words, CL, and you're very welcome. I'm amazed that the thread has lasted three years and has 5,400 posts.

In the earlier years of this thread, I spent oodles of time and major sums of money on it. I worked diligently to make the thread a central information source for RY4s. Now, I'm semi-retired as the RY4 guru. Sure, the thread remains on my Active Subscribed Threads list, and I try to respond to any new posts from day to day, but I almost never buy retail RY4s anymore. About the only way I'll review an RY4 these days is if someone sends me a new one to try. I keep The Big RY4 List pages in my iMac as files that are formatted for ECF and ready to go, so all I have to do is update each of the four as new info comes in, then post the updated List every two months or so, which takes only about half an hour to correct mistakes I find and deal with ECF getting wonky and clogged up, as it does.

Anyway, the point is that my old RY4 job is really very easy these days. As you are well aware, it's my new job as a Natural Tobacco Home Extractor that takes up all my time and energy now, but happily, not nearly as much of my hard-earned money. LOL.

I have been meaning to ask/comment regarding Vapor Station - VS4. I get the "custom" or "variant" descriptions. My experience with VS4 is that is barely resembles an RY4 much more (though in different flavor of course) than something like Ahlusion's Gold Rising. I don't get an RY4 experience from it at all, but rather that straight, arguably cloying toffee component it is famous for. I am surprised to see it listed in the "Stronger Tobaccos" category, but not in the "Distinctive (atypical)," as it does not involve the holy trinity of RY4 flavors.

Any thoughts? THANKS!!!

I just re-sampled some DIY Flavorshack Holy Holy Grail RY4. To me, it's an average Custom RY4. More to the point, it tastes like a homemade DIY juice more than a superbly crafted retail juice, at least to my palate. Oh sure, the three fundamental and required flavors of RY4---synthetic tobacco, caramel, and vanilla--- are present, but the end result isn't magical, just sort of OK. Well, that's an RY4 that deserves to get a C grade.

You write, "It's the only RY4 I have tried." Am I reading that correctly? You've tried only one RY4, and it's the DIY Flavorshack Holy Holy Grail RY4? If that's true, then you have no basis for comparison with other RY4s. For all you know, other RY4s could be the nectar of the gods. Try an RY4 from the A group, such as MrVape, Mister-E-Liquid, Butterfly's, or Indigo Classic. I think you might be surprised.

I'm not suggesting that you shouldn't enjoy DIY Flavorshack Holy Holy Grail RY4. Any juice we like is a good thing. Who cares what someone else thinks of it?

You really can't go wrong with any of the A rated ones. Also helps with an education of what RY4 was originally by trying a few of them and a few lower rated ones. You will learn quickly. FWIW, my current faves are Mr Vape and Butterfly's, in part because with both I can order higher vg. Over 50% pg gives me problems. Some of the A ones I will never have for that reason not because I wouldn't want to try them!

Our palates may be a bit different on this one, but let me start with the facts:

Caramel and toffee are distinguished by two main differences: 1. Milk or cream---part of the recipe for caramel, but not for toffee. 2. cooking temp---toffee is cooked longer and hotter than caramel to make it crunchy. Caramel is cooked for less time at lower heat to allow it to stay either chewy or as a thick liquid. As a general rule, caramel tends to be sweeter, while toffee is "smokier." Both can taste more or less buttery, depending on the individual recipe.

In short, caramel and toffee are cousins. Some RY4s lean more toward caramel, some lean toward toffee.

As for Ahlusion Gold Rising, I don't taste that as similar at all to VaporStation VS4 (I just vaped them both). First off, Gold Rising is an NET, while VS4 has synthetic tobacco. Very different. Then, Gold Rising has a distinct honey element; VS4 doesn't. That honey flavor was one of the two reasons that Gold Rising got kicked off The Big RY4 List, the other being overall flavor profile. Gold Rising tastes like an Ahlusion blend, not an RY4.

Basically, I find lots of RY4s similar to VS4, but then, I've vaped 160 of them. Yeah, I get your point about toffee rather than caramel, but that's not as rare as you may think. In fact, it's fairly common among Custom RY4s (though not Classics---they're caramel all the way). Do you not taste vanilla in VS4? I do. No, vanilla isn't listed in the text description of VS4, but it's not listed in the text description for VaporStation RY4, either. I taste vanilla in both, however. So, for my money, VS4 is a bonafide RY4. Many Custom RY4s are technically atypical, but not so much that I list them in that category. As for the Stronger Tobacco, the flavor I'm tasting is a synthetic tobacco and may not be what you've come to regard as "tobacco." I mean, Boba's Bounty doesn't taste like tobacco at all, unless you wrap your head around the fact that it's a synthetic tobacco.

VaporStation RY4 is a bit more standard, but VS4 is a better overall juice in my estimation.

That said, you have clarified for me there IS in fact much less difference between toffee and caramel than I thought, and for that reason as well as other "toffee-like" Ry4 variants on the BIG list, I totally get it and consider myself edumacated on this issue.

I posted in another thread recently that I made up a bottle of some pre mixed toffee, vanilla custard, and American Spirit NET about a third of each and it came out pretty good.

I succumbed this morning to a momentary bout of insanity---not a senior moment, but rather a JAS attack (Juice Acquisition Syndrome)---and considered buying 15ml bottles of Smugjuice NET-based RY4 and RY4 Extra (same juice with more tobacco) to review for the thread. Thankfully, my wallet remained sane and vetoed that plan.

So, instead, I whipped up a DIY NET-based RY4 of my own: Hearth&Home Burley Kake RY4. Took me a long time to master making good RY4s from scratch, because making good RY4 is a lot more than simply slapping together any old tobacco, caramel, and vanilla flavorings. Good RY4s require flavorings that harmonize and complement each other in just the right mix. I worked at that for more than a year of mostly failures before the successes began to accrue, but by George I think I've done it! This RY4 required all of three minutes to make, and it's both rich and deeeeeelicious. Here's the recipe:

7% H&H Burley Kake extract (homemade)
5% Nature’s Flavors Caramel
5% Nature’s Flavors Caramel Cream
5% Nature’s Flavors Bavarian Cream

I made a bottle of 12mg, 50/50 PG/VG. Man, oh man, the slightly nutty bass notes of the Burley provide a wonderful anchor for the Nature's Flavors organic caramels (Caramel and Caramel Cream) and vanilla (Bavarian Cream). It's terrific. By itself, the Burley Kake is good, if a bit tame, what with the dominance of the mid-range and bass, but it's perfect for RY4s. I think I'll try another bottle adding a bit of Perique for spice and Virginia for brightness, but it'll be hard to top this one, since simple is often best.

I can't say that NET-based Custom RY4s have ruined me entirely for synthetic-tobacco-based Classic RY4s---they are, after all, two very different kinds of creatures, and Classic RY4s are, well, classic. The top-rated retail Classic RY4s are still amazing juices, but natural tobacco RY4s have taken me quite a ways down the road toward conversion, and this delightful Burley Kake RY4 is yet another vote toward cementing my personal allegiance to the NET-based Custom RY4 camp. The fact that I can make it myself for next to nothing is icing on the cake.

If the good folks at SmugJuice want to see their two NET-based RY4s reviewed here and included on The Big List, they can send me sample bottles, and I will happily accommodate them. The same applies for the other hundred-or-so retail RY4s not yet reviewed and on The List. I'll happily keep writing RY4 reviews and updating The Big RY4 List, but I'm no longer inclined to pay out of my own pocket to do so. Enough already of my financial devotion to the RY4 cause.
