Cool,

In vaping's brief history, the main source of tobacco Absolute was the Bulgarian commercial product originally marketed in the perfume industry. The traits you mention, including a greenish-yellow oily residue, are characteristic of that particular TA.

Now, however, other sources of TA are popping up in the marketplace. The two I know of are VelvetCloudVapor and NudeNicotine. I simply don't know if their versions of TA share the qualities we've come to associate with Bulgarian TA.

Below is the Categories group for Natural tobacco RY4s in the format used for the most recent update of The Big RY4 List. Notice how I've set it up, so that the source (in-house or not) and kind of tobacco flavoring (NET or TA) are included:

Natural Extract Tobacco (NET) or Tobacco Absolute (TA)
GoodEJuice GJ4 (in-house macerated NET)
HighbrowVapor Highbrowbacco RY4 (NET, source unknown)
IndigoVapor Naturally RY (presumably Tobacco Absolute)
KillerJuice RY4 (“all natural,” presumably NET, source unknown)
Mom&PopVaporShop RY4 (Tobacco Absolute)
Mom&PopVaporShop RY4v2 (Tobacco Absolute)
Mom&PopVaporShop RYO4 (Tobacco Extract, a derivative of Tobacco Absolute)
Moondrop RY4 (Tobacco Absolute)
MountainOakVapors Full Virginia Flake RY4 (in-house macerated NET)
MyVapeJuice Rogue RY4 (in-house macerated NET)
N-E-T.com tRY4.1 (in-house macerated NET)
PrimeVaping PV4 (NET, unknown source)
QuickNicJuice RY4 (Tobacco Absolute, I think)
QuickNicJuice ouR whY Qu4tro (in-house macerated NET)
River Bottom Fog Sauce KillR Y4 (in-house macerated NET) - sold by VapingWatch
SpringVapor Fall Harvest RY4 (Tobacco Absolute)
SpringVapor Black Label RY4 (Tobacco Absolute)
SpringVapor Black Label RY4 - Day and Night (Tobacco Absolute)
VapeRite Organic VR4 (in-house macerated NET)
VapeRite RY4 (in-house macerated NET?)
VaporStation VS4 (Tobacco Absolute/NET blend)
Want2Vape RY4 (in-house macerated NET)

Thanks. Very nice list. I just started doing some more serious DIY but only somewhat familiar with the chemistry. I've been testing consumer rebuilding practices for over a year. And a part of this has been occasionally blending RY4's and well known juice brands to test performance issues on atomizers. Recently I began Nude Nic's tobacco TA and found it to be surprisingly clean vaping despite it being so concentrated (.5% really?!!!). A rather robust organic flavor signature, smell (I assume it's organic alcohol components) which to me resemble salt water crustacea. There is a formidable steeping curve of at least 1-2 weeks as this attribute becomes more manageable and the tobacco elements become more discernible. Once there it blends exceedingly well with just about any tobacco or tobacco based juice I tried and particularly with TFA dRY4.

Can you comment regarding Johnson Creek's lineup as I've long suspected there is a TA component quite similar to NN distilled variant?

Grateful for the sum up.

Good luck.

:)

Specs: The 10ml bottle of Vaperstek RY-K that was sent to me for free by Kevin, the owner of Vaperstek, contains a peach-colored liquid at 12mg nic in a 60PG/40VG base. Scent of the liquid is mild and pleasing, but my nose can’t pick out any particular elements of the smell. (This is not unusual, and is not meant as criticism.) I don’t know if the juice was pre-mixed or made to order before mailing, but I’ve given it a week of steeping after arrival. Testing was done by dripping into a 2.3 ohm Joyetech standard “old-school’ 510 atomizer powered by a VAMO set to 9 watts.

Vaperstek is a relatively new vendor that is making a name for itself by offering liquid nicotine sourced from the UK. VT’s liquid nic is distinguished from the typical liquid nicotine sold by many vendors by being nearly crystal-clear (meaning colorless) and flavorless (meaning that it adds no flavor of its own when mixed with other flavorings in DIY juices). Vaperstek also sells flavorings and markets its own line of mixed juices.

The description of RY-K from its product page on the Vaperstek site is short and simple: “Our unique take on the nutty RY tobacco flavors.”

Vaperstek RY-K is a Custom RY4. That genre of RY4 (sometimes alternatively referred to as “Modern” or “American” RY4s) covers a wide range of flavor profiles, from fairly similar to Classic (i.e., Chinese) RY4s all the way to wild concoctions that barely resemble what we’ve come to know and love as RY4. Vaperstek RY-K falls on the conservative side of that spectrum. The primary distinctions that make it Custom rather than Classic are that it’s less bright (although I wouldn’t call it deep or dark), emphasizes the individual flavoring elements as distinct tastes (rather than presenting a single, unified overall flavor), and contains a nutty component (a fair number of retail RY4s add a nut flavor, but nuts are not typically part of the Classic RY4 profile). Finally, RY-K presents the basic trio of RY4 flavors---synthetic tobacco, caramel, and vanilla---in balanced proportions. No one flavor stands out as the star of the show (another quality of Classic RY4s that many Custom RY4s honor).

To my palate, RY-K is a low-key, middle-of-the-road RY4 in both design and execution. It’s a nice, pleasing vape, with nothing odd to detract from enjoyment. On the other hand, nothing I can taste in RY-K elevates it into the realm of superb RY4s. Is this a bad thing? Well, we all hope for a home run with each new RY4 we try, of course, but spectacular is---by definition---rare. Sometimes just getting on base with a single is good enough, and that’s the case here.

So, while RY-K won’t make it into the top-rated “A” group of retail RY4s (in my judgment), it is nonetheless a very comfortable RY4. In the realm of cooking/cuisine, there is much to be said for “comfort food,” and the same applies to many eliquids, especially RY4s. With precious few exceptions, RY4 is not an eliquid flavor blend that tries to stretch one’s palate or amaze the vaper with incredible new flavors. No, it’s like comfort food in a vape. And---as Martha Stewart might say---that can be “a good thing.”

My God. Someone needs to take away your credit card :)

Daniel,

Don't worry, someone already has. The only purchases for which I use my debit card are from online ecig vendors---the card itself never leaves my house---and yet my debit card has been hacked online three times in the past two years. I never find out which vendor was victimized by hackers, probably because the vendors themselves don't don't even know that their security was breached. Then weird charges begin to show up on my account from people in places such as Yemen or Korea. Usually my bank flags these unauthorized purchases, but this last time I discovered them myself. Anyway, I've decided to retire my debit card entirely, because I'm tired of going to the bank and filling out forms to get a new card and recover illegal charges for hotel rooms in Paris and expensive dinners in Seoul. This will limit me to using PayPal for purchases, which pretty much means only eBay and FastTech.

That's OK, though, because I've already reduced my profligate spending on this hobby/obsession to a mere shadow of its former levels. I figure I have enough stuff now to last me for many years to come.

It's all relative, of course. You think my stash is huge? I've seen individual collections of vaping gear on ECF that dwarf mine.

I use generic Visa or Mastercard gift cards to purchase online. The ones where you can put $25-500 on. I give myself a budget and put that on a gift card, good everywhere that takes Visa/Mastercard. I register the card - name and address only. I have never been hacked and these cards are protected from hackers. Were it to be hacked I can get my money back and also any hacker would not have access to much money. There is no personal info/bank account/ssn whatever on the card. Only charge is the initial approx $5 charge to load it (not reloadable). Small price for me to pay for the personal comfort. When I end up with a few bucks left on the card I just use the balance at a store toward a regular purchase, completing the transaction with cash. Works for me!

Hi Bill,
I was reading this thread thinking back to all the different RY4s that I've tried as I offen do. Tonight I was thinking about ITC Vapor's RY4 new formula and how it would differ in rankings compared to the first (original) version. Have you had a chance to pick up either one of ITC's new offerings? The last time I looked they had two different RY4 on their site but had plans to include more. Last time I checked there was a silver and a gold version and from what Ive read the only thing that differs the two is the amount of tobacco flavoring in each. I really liked the first bottle of the original version I bought some time back so I'm interested to see what you think about the new versions.

All I've had is the original ITC RY4, which was a good, solid "B" rated Custom RY4. I figured that the original might be the same as or similar to what ITC now offers as their "Silver RY4," but that's purely a guess. ITC may have reformulated their original recipe for their new RY4 offerings.

As I've written, I don't generally buy retail RY4s anymore. On occasion, I might pick up one during a really good sale, like 40-50% off, but even that's rare. I don't mean to be a jerk about this, but $1500 out of my own pocket for RY4s, just so I can review them for this thread, is enough. I have numerous cabinet drawers filled with bottles of retail RY4s, more than 160 of them, plus drawers for RY4 flavorings and DIY RY4s. Nowadays, new retail RY4s have to show up in my mailbox by magic, like Vaperstek RY-K did.

If you get either (or both) the ITC Silver or Gold RY4s, write a review and post it on the thread. I'll include it/them on The Big List (and retire the original ITC RY4 to the Discontinued List) with links to the vendor and to your review, for which you'll get credit.

Ok Bill,
I would love to get you feed back on something that I've reviewed. However someone else might beat me to the punch because I'm currently in pretty bad shape due to a car accident that I was in recently. I was hit by a drunk driver which left me with a broken (fractured) back and neck. I'm not sure if you've ever injured your neck or back but it very unpleasant. The reason I brought it up is because it's caused my vaping account to disappear for the moment. As soon as I get back on my feet (literally) and I can go back to work I'll buy both of them and submit a review. Thank you for responding to my question.

Haven't vaped any RY4 for over a year. Just bought a bottle of RY4 gold from Ikenvape. It's the VG version as the PG version was sold out. I prefer VG anyway but wanted to see how much better tasting the PG was. This stuff was an ADV for me for almost a whole year. Good stuff! Glad yer still at it Bill. Thanks again.

Thanks, Sam.

Nowadays, my job here on the thread is mostly just maintaining The Big RY4 List and posting the updated version every two months, doing the occasional review when a new RY4 shows up in my mailbox, and answering questions. Pretty low-key, all things considered.

Reposted from the NET thread..

I've had a few sessions with ouR whY qu4tro from QNJ, their NET RY4 that's been around for some time. It's unique as it's the only RY4 that I'm aware of that uses extracted fire cured tobaccos for the bacco part of the trinity. It's not a big smack of tobacco for a NET, but certainly is in the land of RY4. It also has a strong caramel presence and a less potent, but still easy to pick out, vanilla.

Overall it's solid, well-executed, and easy to vape with no off notes. So far, it's not a reorder for me though. I can't really say it's lacking anything, just not really grabbing me in any significant way. For my preferences, I much prefer GJ4 from GeJ, which gives me the 'I'm really enjoying vaping this' feel. OuR whY qu4tro is easily recommendable, just not a personal home run, and a pain to type out on a smart phone lol.
