Our esteemed colleague the hangdude graciously sent me a 6ml sample bottle of Mt.BakerVapor RY4. LeDean at MountainOakVapors mailed me a complimentary 3ml sample bottle of MOV Classic CountRY4. This review is a two-fer, covering both juices in one post.

Both juices are 18mg nic in unspecified PG/VG base blends (I’d guess 50/50 for both, given flavor and viscosity, but I might be wrong). The juices are about the same color, a medium gold tint. They were sampled by atty-dripping and also loaded into fresh Boge LR cartos powered by a Madvapes VV box providing about 9 watts.

Let me start by establishing the bottom line: These are perfectly fine custom RY4s that are definitely worthy of consideration by any reader of this thread. I write that up front because I am not personally in love with either of these RY4s, and the review that follows will attempt to explain why, but without trashing what I feel are thoughtful, well-crafted juices (nor criticizing the vendors who made them, both of which are wonderful in different ways---Mt.Baker for its incredibly low prices and customizing options, and MountainOak for the complex and quite extraordinary subtlety of its juices).

OK, on to the storytelling...

One of the most basic differences between classic Chinese formulations of RY4 versus the more recent custom American reformulations that are increasingly prevalent in the vaping marketplace is in the quality I might call flavor brightness. Classic RY4s are usually very bright. Not bold. Not intense. Those latter qualities vary widely from one RY4 to another. No, I mean bright: sparkling, almost effervescent, like the higher octaves in music. Classic RY4s make your taste buds sit up and take notice.

By contrast, custom RY4s are usually deeper and lean toward the middle and lower end of the musical flavor scales. Not necessarily blow-your-socks-off bass-heavy, but calmer and somewhat more restrained than their classic RY4 counterparts. Custom RY4s don’t grab your taste buds; they embrace and massage them. With some custom RY4s, the taste impact is like Swedish Deep Muscle massage. In others, impact has the light, feathery touch of Lymph Massage. Either way, the effect is relaxing.

While the flavor profiles of MBV RY4 and MOV CountRY4 differ widely (more about that below), they are both custom RY4s all the way in their decided lack of brightness. These juices are so laid back that they’ve fallen asleep. Look, I’m not suggesting that every RY4 should sound like shrill trumpets trying to hit that high C note. The arrival of custom RY4s has brought a compelling new depth to RY4 Land, which is a great thing. But you don’t make an orchestra with just violas and bassoons. You need the violins for balance. And piccolos too. In my opinion, balance is not a sterling quality of either MBV RY4 or MOV CountRY4.

As for flavor profiles, MBV RY4 reminds me of VapeMasters RY4 and Vapure VY4, which were, in fact, the same juice, and among the very first RY4s I ever vaped. 18 months later I still have the original bottles of both, which are now dying a slow death in my juice cellar, never to be vaped again. Why? Because I’m not a fan of maple flavoring in my RY4s, and all three of those juices have that taste. Sweet is OK, and maple is very nice with waffles, but maple and RY4 are not a combination to my liking. Therefore, I give MBV RY4 a grade of C-.

The flavor profile of MOV CountRY4 is built on a very sophisticated and subtle mix of flavors. I hate to say this, but RY4 is actually a very simple, straightforward, almost adolescent blend. MOV CountRY4, however, is a juice with fully mature and adult sensibilities, which I’m sure will please some vapers immensely. For me, though, it wanders too far from basic spirit of RY4, namely, the raw kick of it. As a result, I give MOV CountRY4 a grade of B-.

I hear that MountainOak is coming out with a second version of RY4. Good plan. Let CountRY4 continue as the responsible, serious older brother. Then give us a younger, wilder sibling---like the two brothers in A River Runs Through It. Offering multiple versions of RY4 is becoming something of a trend; I hope Mt.BakerVapor takes the hint and follows suit by ditching the maple.

Another great review(s) bill. I agree completely on MtBakerVapor and the maple.

I also agree to an extent on MOV's version. The difference is our taste preferences. I still enjoy spending the day with RY4. MOV CountRY4 is a great RY4 for long vape sessions, for many of the reasons you put forth. It is both "very sophisticated and subtle" but not wild. I think it is Classic, in the sense that it doesn't step far out of the three-sided RY4 box, but firmly American, in its "base notes" (mainly from the rich caramel).

I know this thread has made it hard for you to have an all-day RY4. You offer us a great service by reviewing and revisiting so many RY4s. Thank You!!!

I hope you enjoy the WTA I sent along with MtBaker. That stuff is awesome!

dude,

Your thoughts strike me as sound and well-reasoned. I understand your point about CountRY4 not deviating from the basic recipe for RY4s. I guess that's why MOV christened it Classic CountRY4. In my defense, I now consider LeDean to be so talented and skilled in the amazing subtlety of her juice-making that it puts her almost in a league all her own. I can't think of any of her juices without the word "custom" coming to mind. Oh well, we're both right. Vapers looking for an all-day RY4 should definitely check out CountRY4!

I hope you enjoy the WTA I sent along with MtBaker. That stuff is awesome!

After the blow-out of the past 18 hours with the MountainOak and MountBaker juices, I'm holding off on trying the Turkish Blend WTA until my palate has a chance to rest and recover. Also, I don't want to blow such a lovely gift by chowing it all down in one feverish bite like some starving dog. Stretch it out a bit, you know? I'll PM you with my thoughts about the WTA after I try it. That should be interesting.

so what does everyone use to vape the
glorious RY4 , I have a mini Provari with 1.5 dual coils and Chibi tanks

Either way it's gotta be a reo for me. A reo grand useually for an all day vape, but maybe for a test or review I'll switch over to the mini. Gotta be at low resistance though. Preferably Cisco 1.5's though non branded LR 510's ain't bad either. On LR tha Vapers obviously more plentiful and tends to run hotter. But there's more to then that, flavours are actually different. On LR attys a lot of Ry4's high notes really sing. For sweeter blends, that golden caramel sweetness is heightened on the exhale by a LR.

True also of janty, a sweeter mix, but one which I find on LR attys to have a accentuated liquorice like flavour, it just makes the juice sing. Fill up a reo grand or mini with a Joyetech RY4 at 18mg or higher and you'll not go far wrong from vaping heaven. It's deliciously goey, caramel sweetness, a delicate vanillia background and a thick but smooth Tobacoo with a pretty impressive throat hit.

Bill.... does the MOV RY4 seem to have other flavors or does the 3 flavors just not have a even mixed taste, is one overpowering?

Also any word on High Desert RY4, they have a couple, also they are charging $1.00 extra for one of the RY4s and a state tax charge so for just 2 10mls it was over $20.... just could not roll the dice on these guys yet....

Bill, that is such a perfect (and perfectly lyrical!) description of the difference between the two types of RY4.

When I first started vaping, I had and completely fell in love with a Chinese RY4, and it was very much because of that "sparkling" crisp quality. I almost wonder whether I would have completely quit smoking had I not had that lovely and compelling RY4 wooing me from the get-go. :)

I have now moved on to other loves (mostly fruited tobaccos and fruits), but I will always have a soft spot for RY4 because of it's singular role in my falling in love with vaping! (I do still love and keep on hand a very nice Chinese RY4, the Volt RY4 from Smokeless Image.)
