And there is nothing better than fresh eggs. Chickens are pretty dirty though, my sister had some. Keep that coop far away from your house and everyone else's! When you clean out the coop, you can use the droppings as fertilizer for your garden too.

Welcome. A friend, I haven't seen in a couple of years, has some small, exotic chickens, she keeps as pets. She even has diapers for them so they can be inside some. She lives not too far from downtown Dallas, in a big old house with huge yard. (But lived in a two story duplex, small yard, for several years until they decided what to do with the big house. They restored it, eventually.) You can have chickens and other "farm" animals in city limits but no roosters or cloven/hooved animals. Sweet babies they were.

BTW... she and her husband have known DH since Medical School, late 1950's but they just hooked back up about 10 yrs ago. When I went to visit her, first time, in her duplex, she was pretty amazed I didn't think she was weird keeping chickens as pets.

Did she have any silkies? I think they are adorable and want at least 2 or 3 of that kind. Plus 2 or 3 bigger types. Not real big though I live in a area that we can have chickens but no roosters.

You don't like chicken? I like mine spatchcocked and bricked best, but the summer grilling season is coming to an end. Can't have fried, but can do them baked and roasted. A good roasted chicken can be magic with the skin all crispy, Kay loves it that way too. YUMMO!

Maybe I should think about getting some chickens... but they are so stinky and then I would have to kill them and DH still has a very distinct memory from when his Grandmother used to butcher them so I think that might not work here. We have a lot of "organic" egg signs on the roads out here so I know a lot of people are keeping them nearby. But dang fresh chicken sounds awesome!

I live on almost one acre and was thinking of letting them free range and just putting them in a coop at night. My property is fenced in with woods on 3 sides. The only close neighbor i have is across the street/dirt road.

ETA I will eat the eggs but not the chickens. If i can't keep them i will give them away.

another eta: I like chicken to eat but not if i know them personally.

We had ducks and pigeons when I was coming up. Every night my job was to herd the ducks into the pen, and I was young but even then it wasn't easy! Maybe chickens would be easier to get back in the roost though since they don't want to stay in the pond! My brother took care of the pigeons. And we lost a few ducks to raccoons, coyotes etc. The raccoons are very insidious (no disrespect to our very own Insidious Raccoon) and would even manage to get at them in the pen. If you have that much land, you are bound to have some predators so make sure your coop is well constructed

ETA: I should say make sure the coop isn't just designed to keep them in, but built even stronger to keep predators OUT.

Den, I looked it up for you. Season 3 starts tomorrow, it is ending up season 2 tonight. The famous barn burning scene is coming up! And Michonne's grand entrance! And a herd! Oh my!

Val...if you're gonna talk about WD, could you try to show a little enthusiasm?

Good advice, i need all that anyone has to offer. I am reading about how to train chickens to go to their coop. That is another reason to wait for spring or summer so it gets all set up.

Thanks for the greetings everyone. RHP, and everyone else, feel free to call me Sbm or Saleem. I'm definitely digging my new toy, but I'm realizing I need to go get myself a meter for both batteries and coils.

My weekend plan is to figure out what coil I like. I thought .9 was too hot, but now the 1.4 I built seems too cool. Maybe I'll try a 1.1 or 1.2 build. I already burnt my first wick, so in thinking of trying out the stainless mesh I got. I've got a much wider mesh than most use, bc I'm vaping 100%vg. We'll see how that works. I've never used it before. It's good to have a 3day weekend.

We didn't eat our ducks, geese or pigeons, just the duck eggs. And we had a male, so fertilized meant sometimes balut which I do not ever want to experience! To this day I am super picky about how I like my eggs done, and won't have them scrambled because I want to see that there are no feathers in them

I feel the same way about any animal though. It just depends on what the animal owner's intentions are as to why they are raising livestock: are they pets or food? My sister named all her stock things like "Dinner" and "Pork Chop" so her kids would be clear on what their destiny was. Different cultures have such different views on food and eating and I try to keep an open mind on all food. When I went to China and Thailand all bets on dog and cat were off, I didn't know them and they were being raised for food so why not try them? I never did find any "snak" or "meow" though. Much to DH's relief. I am an adventurous eater though, I will try (almost) anything once. I don't want to eat brains because of prions for instance. But I did get to try durian and it wasn't bad! Half the things I really love most people might not want to even try. When I watch that Zimmern guy's show on strange eats (can't remember the title) I am usually saying, "Hey, that isn't strange, it's good!".
