Val, I have a 17 year old cat who is on the downside. In her heyday she was about 14 lbs; Now I am lucky if she weighs 8 lbs. She still doesn't have that "look in her eyes" so I'm in wait and see mode. I've had her since she was 7 weeks old.
I know how you feel. When we bought this house in '04, Mamaw wanted a Shetland Sheepdog. Some call them miniature Collies. We got Cody, a rescue dog, in '05. At that time the Vet estimated his age at about 5 years. Cody is struggling now, doesn't eat nearly enough and doesn't want to go outside anymore (Mamaw assists). He used to bark at anything, now he just lies quietly. Mamaw took him to the Vet last month but nothing turned up. I think the end is near. I think I read somewhere once that breed is good for 10 to 12 years, so Cody has had a long, good life. Just difficult to watch them fade away like this....
