Thanks all! And damn, Waho. Good to hear from you. How's the wife? Hope to see you guys again sometime soon.

PC is built and went without a hitch. I followed Papa's advice to a T and had no issues. Was a ton of fun, actually! Now, my only problem which hopefully will be resolved today is the Wi-Fi isn't working (and ethernet isn't an option, so...crapola, as dad would say).

Pics later...first some more troubleshooting. Thanks for the tips, everyone!

Literally did a spit take reading this. Wife is still laughing (a little too much, if you ask me).
another time, Jordan Palace Hotel in down-town Tehran. The local office manager had offered to take my colleague and myself walking in the mountains behind Tehran. We agreed and he said he would pick us up at 4.30. Queried if it might be a bit warm that late in the day - NO 4.30 am. Oh, OK. next morning at 4.00, in the bathroom again, (hmm, seems to be a pattern there) leaning on the wash-basin brushing my teeth when the room appeared to be spinning. Steadied myself to find that the wash-basin had lost all connection with the wall and was falling towards me. Worse than that, the water pipes were only inserted into the base with some plumbers tape. Well, what can one do ? Deposited the basin on the floor and paddled out of the bathroom and called room service "good morning, I have a problem with the wash-basin in the bathroom, can you send a plumber please - room xxx" certainly sir. Minutes later a young guy arrives at the door with a coffee service. Mmm how to explain. Took him to the bathroom and showed him. He departed, muttering in Farsee under his breath, I don't wish to know the translation, thanks. Finished getting dressed when there was a knock at the door and outside was a guy with a plumbers canvas hold-all. Left him to it and went downstairs to find my colleague and local guy making snarky comments about late wake-ups which turned into riots of laughter when I explained. The walk was terrific and well worth the early start.

Glad your build went well! I'm glad I usually spend other people's money to build or I'd end up broke.

We're doing well! We ended up raiding the vacation fund to have our master bed/bath remodeled so it may be a hot minute before we can make it back out there. My wife brings it constantly though [emoji1787]

@Papa_Lazarou Thank you, kind sir. And funny comment, that. I grew up playing video games, then went over a decade without playing them only to come full circle several months ago - but I'm more of an RPG/horror fan. Currently playing Witcher 3 (oh man, I love this - 2nd playthrough and still loving it. Cried 3 times on my first go-round...never cried from a game before, but I was bawling my eyes out at one point in the story) and Resident Evil 7 when I have the time, and I'll be damned if the graphics on this PC don't blow away what I was experiencing beforehand (and the video/photo editing is simply insane). I had no idea how far video games have come, both in terms of graphics and gameplay.

I'm incredibly pleased with it, and, to be blunt, I'm proud of myself. Never thought I'd be able to do it, but now that I have I can honestly say I'll never buy a prebuilt PC again. Hope this'n lasts years to come, but it's nice knowing I can upgrade it/replace parts as needed. Only thing I might do in the near future is add another SSD. I'm running two in it now, but both are small in capacity. That NVMe drive for the boot is a wild ride, though... :w00t:

@Waho Congrats on the home improvements, my friend! Please tell her I send my regards and look forward to seeing you both, no matter how long it is :)

Some more PC porn, these photos being the first edited on the new beast. I need to edit the pics from our westward journey soon. Be sure to post some up when I do.

Merry belated Christmas, Reoville.

We've had the worst wind storm in 20 years (according to the news) and been without power and internet for a week. That can happen on these little islands and, thankfully, we were prepared with water, lights, cooking gear, etc. Duck confit, roast beets, and quinoa on a camp stove for Christmas dinner (turkey wasn't an option, not that we missed it).

Best wishes for all in this holiday season!

Hee-whack!! Sweet system. Once you start building your own, you never go back ('cept for laptops).

I'm an RPG man, myself, and Witcher 3 is awesome. Weirdly coincidentally, I just finished another playthrough. The story is one of the most involving I've ever seen in a game (and, as you know, it was how I made my living for 2 decades).

Tell me.... are you a Triss or Yennifer man? ;)

Hah, somehow I'm not surprised you dig the Witcher 3. It's rather becoming of sophisticated gentlemen like us, if I do say so myself :toast:

Went with Yennefer on the first go-round. This time around, I just started going after Triss this morning. Prefer to have both at once, but...err, this is Reoville, so I'll stop at that :w00t:

Glad you're alright post-storm, brother. Didn't know that was happening. Sounds like a rough one.

Spoiler alert: Triss + Yen = unhappy. Actions have consequences o_O

Yeah, the storm was a doozy (actually 5 storms in a row). Thousands of trees down, 100% of roads impassable on 3 of the islands. Crews worked around the clock (still are), even on Christmas. The only upsides: save money on electricity plus firewood for all for years. Fortunately, most folks around here are prepared with generators, rainwater, food stores, etc. We all chipped in for chainsaw duty to help clear.

Typical shot, this one taken about 5 mins from us...

I can't "Like" it. That is the kind of devistation we had in central Kentucky a few years back during a huge ice storm. We were without power (except for the handy Honda generator) for seventeen days. I got very good with a chain saw clearing the mess over a two year span. I couldn't look at the whole job at once, it was overwhelming. I mapped out a twenty square foot area in my mind and every weekend I would start on a square, move to the next asn so on until all the downed trees and branches were gone.

Best to you, Papa, best to you.

Bill...that's unbelievable. I'm just glad you're alright. No damage to your home or property?

Good on you and your community for being so prepared. Kind of goes hand-in-hand with some of our prior conversations.

There was a windstorm up here a few years before I came that knocked 300 pine trees down along the road into my camp. It was all cleared in a matter of 3 days, but for those 3 days the camp was full of terrified guests. I dread ever having to deal with such a scenario, but it will happen one day.

I appreciate the sentiment. Thanks for that :toast:

Fortunately, we live in a mild climate and the coldest it got was about 40F in the dead of night. Days were actually quite pleasant for the clearing work (which continues). I hear you about the focus-on-what-you-can-do-today approach - definitely the way to go. Most of the properties here are treed acreages, so that's an every day thing for us just dealing with the annual detritus.

What you went through must have been harrowing. 17 days is a looooong haul. Gotta love those Hondas - well worth the premium over other generators.

Freakishly good luck for us - about a dozen trees down, but nothing that affected the buildings, driveway, or other infrastructure. My neighbours were not so lucky and had a big boy take out their garage. The structure is basically a tear down now and the rv inside might be written off, too. Another neighbour and I bucked up the tree into rounds for firewood. In fine island style, the owners (musicians in their 60's) hosted a bonfire cookout that night and played folk songs for us.

One woman was killed on the big island, no other fatalities (which is a miracle). Lots of cars at the village market yesterday with tree-shaped dents in roofs and hoods, tho.
