hi mike
you were working on a hard case batt ...any problems with the tabs breaking of ?
qwestions on my dna 20 mods ...one went south ..started w the ohms not showing but cept working otherwise but now went out complete.
the other fell about 18 inches and also went out complete and broke the glass on the readout to.
not a good xmas eve . I have two more dna s planed fo other mods and I gess I have to use them to fix these .
qwestion... are the boards in your oppineon that delicate ? or can I revive them to work without the readout ?
maybe the dna 30 will be more rugged ? I gues I have to mount them more riget rather than floating a little.

The DNA screens can be fragile....more so where the ribbon connects to the screen, the ribbon to pcb connection can also be a vulnerable connection but not as much as the ribbon to screen.

Making sure the screen and DNA are securely mounted with as little force or potential of force applied to these connections will go a long way to help lessen possible damage. Also be careful folding the ribbon, I once accidentally folded the ribbon 180* and doing so broke the wires inside the ribbon.

Using a DNA without the screen is no fun and kind of a PITA if you are only using buttons for wattage adjustment, a pot may be better solution so you have some idea where the wattage is set at.

I would recommend contacting Evolv before you count the 2 DNA's as a loss. They have a great reputation of working with and taking care of their customers.

No problems, just had to be careful openng the plastic case. However, I had a little circuit board with terminal lugs on it. I kept the circuit board and just swapped out a wire for the big lugs. So, I really wasnt using the bare tabs, I left them soldered to the bottom of that board.

I think Bap pretty much addressed how fragile that ribbon cable/connection is. One thing that helped me avoid stressing the cable was to use Bap's screen bezel available on Shapeways.

Oh, and I havent figured out how to drop-proof a Mod yet, short of unacceptable bulk.

jep I had good luck with a small slice of fiberglas and 5 min epoxy folded back that one did not break. it just quit working .I gues it is the board itselv went south. the other one I did not use fiberglass only a bit of epoxy to stiifen it and that is the one I dropped .
well if the boards would work ...but no output at all...I would use a pot but they don't work at all .
on problem is that I did not secure the battery to good maybe they slammed against the board . also did not glue the board ..was thinking the wires would act like a shock absorber ..so much for that! got to rethink my mounting . thanks the comeback

ok on your lipo battery . iceep looking at it ...thinking of using it with a rca connector and build the mod separate like an oval pecil to plug in should be pocket friendly.
so when I eat I need a bibb...and when I vape I need a lanjard ?
I gues I have to break down and order some bezels .

you're not alone - i believe schnarph also had an order coming through sweden post and it reached him eventually

It showed up, longest trip I've ever seen: HK -> SG -> SW -> NY - > TX

With regards to soldering those SS Chi You flat top caps, here is what I tried today. This is my first attempt so it is sloppy, but it worked great.

Everything I read about soldering to SS seemed to center on getting the SS nice and clean by using an acid based flux to remove any surface oxide. I used: Airgas - HARSCLF4 - Harris Welco® Stay-Clean® Liquid Soldering Flux, 4 Ounce Flip Top Bottle and regular old Kester brand lead-free solder.

I removed the pin and plastic insulator then cleaned the surface with the flux. I could have used wire instead of the fork terminal, but I was playing around with terminals because of some other ideas I have. I heated the SS until I could get solder to flow and lightly tinned the surface area I was working in. I then set the fork terminal (or wire) on the SS and applied the solder iron to the TOP of the wire/terminal and heated it until solder would flow by just touching it. I had to arrange my work so everything would stay in place once I let go. The factor being that the mass of SS took a while to cool and I didnt want anything to move while it was cooling.

While the pin was still out of the base I took the bottom part of telescopic pin completely out and heated the top half of the pin until solder would flow inside the screw hole that was left vacant. I then simply stuck a stripped and tinned piece of wire into the solder blob. The pin held heat for a while which kept the solder molten so I had to make sure wire wouldnt move when I let go.

Cleaned off the flux with alcohol and screwed it all back together:

Hey bap, that is sure sweet. I know daras somewhat, he is from Poland but in the UK. He has done some touchwood similar designs before. Not sure if it helps with sourcing, but I think he gets it in the UK.

Woot woot.....FT Taifun GS clone time.

Initial out of the box thoughts.....It's better than the FT TGT clone!!!

It's has supper fine knurling like the authentic TGT.....even the tank threads are good!!! The only flaws I could find were minimal, and they were a slightly loose drip tip and slightly loose chimney tube where it goes into the deck. The chimney tube should still seal fine, if not I'm sure a wrap of floss or different oring will fix that. Not much you can do on the drip tip because it's the diameter of the drip tip that's the problem. Maybe a little tape or something. But IMO the drip tip is more comfortable than the stock TGT, the feel reminds me off my long Taifun tips. Oh and plus it's pretty clean out of the box (still will clean )
