Ok you smart drippers... see if you can help me figure this out...

I won this dripper - Scythe Shined - Atmomixani - guy at my b&m helped me figure out how to use it, and put a coil on for me. It reads .7 ohms, and I think he said he used 24ga wire (I might have remembered that part wrong). He seems to know his stuff and I trust him.

So the first time I tried it, it was with my DIY Twinkie. I noticed a hot / harsh taste but figured it was because my recipe wasn't right for dripping.

Been sick a lot since then, and just got around to trying the dripper again today. Hubby and I both tried a number of juices and it seems like there is a hot, harsh, metallic sort of taste to everything! We started at 25w but tried higher and lower - it didn't seem to matter.

Is it a problem with the wire? I was dry burning it between juices by just heating it to glowing for a second or so, letting off the button, then blowing on it. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

I also used less cotton than before because I didn't want the different flavored juices mixing in the well and wicking up to the coil, so I cut the cotton short enough to keep it from going down into the well. Maybe it wasn't enough cotton? Hmmm... no, because the first time, with the twinkies, there was plenty of cotton... I'm grasping at straws.

I'm a dripper noob. I know nothing. Hoping you guys have some suggestions because I'm starting to think I'm not gonna like dripping after all.
Sounds like you may be getting a hot spot, could be on the coil, or could be from insufficient wicking. Pull your wick and dry burn, make sure coil heats from the inside out, no brighter spots. If the looks fine, rewick with thicker density.

The metallic and harsh could very well be because it was just unpackaged and built on? As far as the hot not sure on that one. Machining oil is a horrible vape and it does burn going down.
Hmmm... he cleaned it for me at the B&M using their steam cleaner, plus I washed again after I finished the initial Twinkie in it, but I don't remember whether I used soap (I am sensitive to soapy tastes so I avoid it when I think I can)... maybe I'll give it one more good wash and make sure to use soap. It DID have machine oil in it when I got it, which is why the B&M guy had to wash it.

No possibility that it has anything to do with the wire?

About the "hot" - maybe not a good word, I just had a hard time describing the taste -- but it's definitely a sort of metallic taste.

It could be I can't vape Nichrome cause of the weird taste, but if the wires been pulsed a few times I would doubt it's something on the wire.

thank you Reign and everyone else. I'll see if another cleaning fixes it.

Maybe boiling... one of my kayfuns had that nasty sort of taste, even after I soaked it in soapy water; boiling it for 15 mins did the trick.

I missed 30 pages in less than a week. I love you guys. This is the social thread of the year.

Grabbed a Petri on Friday, and while I have gripes, I've gotta say it's my most rootin-tootin-moddin-wompin dripper yet. A stark reminder that PERFECT airflow trumps AFC every time.

Alright ya modwompers, what ya vapin on tonight?

At the moment I am using an IPV2 cranked to 30 watts with a Lemo II that has a .5 coil and filled with Vanilla Pipe Tobacco flavor! Mmmmm Mmmm good!
Im not trying to cloud chase but got this Lemo II the other day and finally got around to trying it out and wow. Unlike the subtank, it likes higher than 20 watts. Too bad the IPV2 maxes at 30 watts.

You've got great advice here already KattMamma :). The only time I've ever got metallic taste was when I had a very minor short which caused a small hot spot using SS wicks in a Genisis atty. I find a more serious short or hot spot causes burnt hits which overpower any metallic flavor.

I hope when you clean the atty again you dry burn to check for hot spots or hot legs on the coils. If it's not oil or a hot spot, I have no idea what it could be since there is no burnt flavor.

One other thought. Every atty adds its own twist to the flavor of a juice and with some the difference can be quite a bit.

Good luck with it :thumb:

Mutation X ver 1 with dual 24 gauge Kanthal at 0.18 ohms on a Sigelei box with my DIY fave juice. Upped it to 57 watts a little while ago. Normally after a dry burn and re-wick I run this at around 47 watts, but I've had a couple of glasses of wine tonight and even broke out the nic

Yup, that's my story and I'm sticking with it
