I don't think it would be pepper, it would an extra taste don't you think?
I generally smoke the high menthol, but now I'm puffing on a low nicotine regular and I'm still getting the same throat hit as the others.
I'm using the pen style.
I do notice that after using it for a while during the day the throat hit gets weaker.
I would assume it's the battery charge and atomizer efficiency.
Then again sometimes when I take a hit I will get a lot of vapor but absolutely NO throat hit.
It is very strange.

i find out that if i smoke during the day too frequent, the throat hit fades out.
as if the throat get used to it. after a break it comes back.
the longer the break the better the hit.

i originally put nic content .
I normally use 36mg stuff , but i tell ya what i've been using up some of my regular high carts ( the prefilled ones ) at 18mg and they give a better throat hit than TW french pipe 36mg. I don't know why but perhaps because they have a slight minty taste to them , even tho they are regular tobacco flavour.

I guess it's more flavourings now..ho hum.....

Does anyone think that air-flow through the atomiser might have something to do with it?

I've found that air flows through some of my 901 atomisers much more freely than it does through others, and it's the ones that offer a bit of resistance that provide the best hit.

People in the UK will be familiar with Silk Cut smokes and the band of little pin holes at the front end of the filter. Smoking one of them when you were used to full fat smokes was a desperate experience. You get no hit at all because of all the clean air that's being pulled in through the pin holes. It sort of dilutes the smoke to such a degree that you don't feel like you're smoking anything.

I think it's the same with atomisers that don't perform as well - reducing the amount of air that flows through them will - more often than not - produce a bigger throat hit (i cover the inlet hole with my thumb for a second).

I was reading the comments on this thread and I thought I would share an experience that I had today.

This morning, I was taking some pretty good drags off of my 901 in my bathroom. I then decided to brush my teeth (to go to bed). I use Aquafresh Teeth Whitening toothpaste. After the normal scrubbing of my teeth and rinsing of my mouth, I decided to take a few more drags off of my 901. I was getting just as much vapor as I did prior to brushing my teeth and my battery strength had not really gone down that much. I had, after all, just hit the 901 a couple of minutes ago.

What I noticed was very close to absolutely no throat hit. I exhaled vapor in about the same quantities as I did prior to brushing my teeth.

I would be interested if anyone can recreate what I experienced.

This has happened to me with my penstyle, without brushing my teeth! I'm hitting it, everything is fine. I put it down, come back to it....no throat hit...but same vapor. I have yet to figure it out before it picks back up again....but sometimes it takes a while. I have no idea what this is but it is annoying as all git go! :-x

Of course, I don't know if it's for the same reason yours happened or not but just sharing a similar experience (and more than once!)

Yep, I think it's a combination:

1) Atomizer efficiency and battery life - I lump these together as if you neglect either one, performance goes downhill fast.

2) Temperature - I've got to believe this is the "missing link". Throat hit is what I miss from analogs, probably as much as nicotine itself. Analog smoke is WAY hotter than our vapor and tons of us have validated that you can "carb" a single hole DSE-901 atty and get a great hit. I think this is due to the reduced airflow not being able to cool the vapor. Some of the newer devices seem to run REALLY hot and are producing great throat hit, it seems to correlate.

Yep, I think you're right about that, Bellinghamster. When I first wake up, I swap out batts, atomizers and carts among my 4 penstyles frantically until I find one that'll give me a good, solid throat hit. Sorry, but it hasn't been that long since I quit tobacco... When I find it, my eyes roll back, I slump down in the chair and savor the moment... Mmmmm! That was soooooo good.... Hehehe.

Thank the heavens I do that in private! If anyone else saw me do that, they'd probably send the big white car with big strong men who want me to try on a pretty white coat with really long sleeves...

Hey! I live in e-space most of the day, using e-mail and e-chat and e-Bay while vaping e-cigs with e-liquid. If that's not e-ccentric, I dunno what is... :)

Mmmmmm?????????

That is very interesting that no one really has conclusive evidence of what it is. Is this phenomena a trade secret or is it an assumed trade secret?

I would really like to know what it is I guess, but I am so new to all this that I may find the right taste and nic level that gives me the hit I want and it won't matter to me anymore what it is.

I have just found by switching from my medium to high cart on my new pen with pass through, that I get throat hit from the high and not the medium, which tells me it is something in the cart, but considering I do not know what all the stuff in the cart is, all I can say that it is in the cart.

As others mentioned, air. My biggest throat hits come from inhaling hard straight to my lungs but not clamping down on the mouthpiece all the way so about 50% air/50% vapor. Sucking hard but making the l.e.d barely come on.

I often don't even inhale though and just hold the vapor in my mouth for extreme extended periods of time. I feel like I get a lot of nic that way.

I agree with you, Bellinghamster. I think temperature of the vapor is the key to a satisfying, analog-like hot punch to the throat. My question to all is: which of the commercially available e-cigs deliver the hottest hit? I have an EVO and a Dura, and while I think they are both well-made and designed and have superior vapor production and battery performance, I'm looking for more throat-roasting hits than they can provide. Any suggestions?
