Alright, gave in, grabbed an Aga-T (glass tank) with a few different thicknesses of wire and a few different types of mesh.... now its the waiting game. On average, how much time do you guys usually get out of a wick/coil when probably set up on your genesis style rba? I assume the wick lasts hella long but do coils burn out more frequently than say, on a different type of device?

All depends on how you build and how you maintain it. The wicks should be good for... I'm not sure anyone has ever worn out an SS mesh wick, to the best of my knowledge ;)

The coil on the other hand... When I made my first attempt(s) the coil generally had a life expectancy of about 30 seconds. I "popped" my first three coils in a row until I learned a bit more about using less voltage when firing it up for the first time... a bad hot spot quickly turns into a gap where melting wire was a split second earlier, if you hold the fire button down too long! ;)

Now I use lower gauge wire which is thicker too and a little bit more forgiving than the higher gauge stuff, but it can all be made to work... with practice.

I dry burn my wick/coil on average about every four or five tanks of juice. No problems so far!

Hello. Just to think about it... I used a few weeks the Smoktech RDA and tried different wicks. I'd never got the same vape than before, once better, once not. But in the end no wick was gibibg a good throat fir more than seven days so I had to do a new wick every sunday.. Now I am back to the DCT tanks and it makes me more happy than ever...

After reading through the discussion here from after I fell asleep, I have a few things to add. I would multi-quote but I'm on my iPad and its a PITA so here it is in no specific order.

As far as clone vs high end atties, I have both and can tell you that you can get a great vape from both, it's all in the build. However the high end rebuildables are of a much better quality and tend to be easier to set up correctly. I get a great vape from an AGA but the top coil hot spot can be a bugger. The real DID, IMHO, is the best you can get for top quality machining, durability, ease of set up and all around good looks. I think it was the best vaping investment I have made and have since picked up another.

On mech vs vv, I love mech mods, makes set up a breeze and they are bullet proof. You can throw them in the bathtub ( I am not recommending trying this), dry them off and they are ready to go. I learned to build on my Provari and although it can be finicky if you have any shorts at all, it is convenient for checking resistance. I have gone as low as .9 ohms on the Provari but usually build it out to about 1.1 because at .9 if it drifts at all it will error on you.

I love 500 SS tight wicks for tilt free vaping, 635 even more so but have been experimenting with FC200 type ceramic wicks and ribbon Kanthal and love where that is going.

Sorry for running on, the best thing about RBAs, as mentioned already, is being able to fine tune and chase the elusive perfect vape.

So.. I went to my buddies place last night and snagged one of the AGA-T2's he wasn't using, some 30 gauge wire and some 400 grain mesh and went back to the lab and... fell asleep. Woke up this morning at about... 5am and sat at my desk for.. well until about an hour ago making wicks and coils.

I will admit that my first three coils immediately popped although I had ZERO problems rolling and oxidizing the mesh. After the third time, I sat back - drank a cup of coffee, did my morning workout, showered and got back at it.

Then, something happened

The fourth coil... It... It worked... The Provari read it at 1.6ohms. I fixed up some hot spots dry burning it with a blunt needle... and holy cow. Holy cow. I have class in an hour and I'm considering not teaching just so I can sit and stare at what I've made.

IT WORKS AND BY GOD ITS PERFECT. Well, its definitely not perfect, BUT IT WORKS! AND IT VAPES AND ITS BLOODY DELICIOUS.

Cannot wait for my own gear to get here so I can start fuxing with various coils and meshes and... Alex breathe, its gonna be fine.

So, for anyone out there on the same boat as to whether or not to get into the RBA bus, Just do it. Do it and do it and do it until it works, because it will. And when it does, everything else becomes... Pointless. I'm already thinking about which RBA to upgrade to next (Thanks guys).

Congrats Chikenbok! It sounds like you have the patience and perseverance to make it work for you, and those two things are key when starting out with RBAs, especially SS mesh. Once you have gotten one to work the worst part of the learning curve is over, IMHO. The coils will get easier and easier to get "right" with each iteration. :)

IMO RBA's are all about the fear of deeming regulation, and putting the time into finding out what will work should they happen.

If you are anything like me you will probably try to learn how to set up a RBA to vape just like the flavor & TH that you already like.
I now have 5 different RBA's that can do just that!

It is pretty cool to sit back and thoroughly enjoy my AGA+MECH and see those after me (don't get me wrong, I just joined the club recently) have that ecstatic moment that I also had when I FINALLY got it right. It definitely feels like joining a club, one that you can't buy admission to, you have to earn it! :D
