I have had to bring copies of the rules to the post office so they would accept items because the employees were not up to speed. Specifically, sending used motor oil samples to a lab for analysis is a notorious example of usps employees being troublesome.

well that's not what usps' website says and it has not been my experience. Either the rules have changed over time or the employees you interacted with didn't understand the rules or both
If i am cobfused about. USPS and their policy on Luthium Ion batteries then so is eBay, Etsy, Bonanza, and Amazon.

The rules changed 1.5 years ago.

Thank you, Rixy. THAT feeling's mutual, kiddo. <wub>

Fantastic post!!! Can it be pinned so others can easily learn of the illustrious history of the Tootle Puffers?

Me too…and proud of it!

If Ms. @Katdarling would like, I can link the above history post into the opening post of this thread. To be preserved for all eternity. :)

Abstoluuuutely, Robin! Feel free!

I've also Blogged it. :)

What happened to my honorable mention for introducing the 25 mm tall bell cap for the kayfun. :)

Now @Katdarling named my "short Kayfun" the Kompact Kayfun ", and the name stuck.

Oh dear oh me oh my. Dos Bears with no honorable mention??

I too have read the USPS info on prohibited items and can't find anything about batteries. Who knows…

Well thanks everyone for your input on batteries. I think I'll continue buying them from RTD even though $3 IMRs are tempting.

And sorry I stirred up the battery hornet's nest.

I would always advise buying from a trusted and reputable vendor. Batts are not criminally expensive, but they ARE the most important part of our gear.

I like Orbtronics, and RTD. There are other great vendors, but I'd never put FT into that kategory.

Seems like I have a problem with discarding batteries. If it will still holds a bit of a charge ... I still have it!
Hell I still have a bunch of old Trustfires in the bottom of the drawer. Haven't used them in 5+ years ... but I still have them. And yes, they still hold a charge.

It was expressed to me early on that where you buy batteries is more important than which battery you choose to use, and I still believe that to be true.

I just finally got rid of some old batteries this year. They were (I think) at least three years old. Four Efest 2500 mAh 15 Amp 18650's IIRC. The wraps were finally starting to degrade. I don't want to mess with re-wrapping (paranoia) and I take very good care of my batteries. They performed very well even up to the point where I got rid of them although not quite as well as when they were new of course.

To a point that's probably true for most of the people in this thread. On a regulated mod at low Tootle Puffer power levels the battery isn't going to see much stress.
For mech users or for people vaping at higher power levels, I think the which is far more important. The problem with a Trustfire battery is that it is a rewrap so you don't really know what battery is underneath the wrap. So even vaping at high resistance I don't think I'd trust it in a mech.

NO, that's not true. Trustfire batteries were the top of the heap for protected ICR batteries.
The problem with them is that they are ICR (lithium Cobalt) cells. ( along with being a low amperage battery)

We used them in machanicals a lot back in the day, but with 1.5 or more ohms. (~2.5 amps)
Beside the amperage limitations we simply came to the conclusion that the chemistry of the battery was not a good choice as other chemistries (IMR & INR) became available.

    add:
So now you know why the V1 Provari had a 2.5 amp limiter.

"Portions" of both posts are correct... You are correct in what you say above and @kad2371 is correct about battery stress with "low power" regulated vs mech mods ....

Ya know it's kind funny, I probably use mech mods more than most, but I never even get close to 3 amps. (1.8 omhs @ 4 volts = 2.2 amps)
So it's all about HOW the mechanical mod is used.
(ya think I'm safe using 20a HG2 batteries?)

So it's all about HOW the mechanical mod is used.

lol ... well, that is part of it for sure.... but as usual, when it concerns electronics, there are always many variables.... Even regulated mods can be dangerous if always run at higher power using an inferior battery. By using a higher quality battery with a high current rating then safety is increased......... @kad2371 was talking about "low power" regulated devices, which pose far less of a danger than anything ran at high power. (regulated, mech, or other)

yes, it is important HOW a mech is used (no doubt)...

I so agree with you and that's why I've always only bought them from RTD and only AW IMRs.

The only reason I considered FT is because they're selling them for $3! Too cheap even for FT. I'm so .... about money that even though they sounded too good to be true I considered it. And that's why I posted. I knew you all would set me straight ;)

The post is linked so the history is now preserved in the first post of this thread....along with Ms. Kat's blog.
    Thank you Ms Robin!
