So, um, I've been reading about these nic salts things y'all are talking about, and...

(lemme think about how to put this....)

Am I missing something, or is that what we've been doing all these years with nic, PG & VG, at one-third the cost?

I'm listening - I promise. I'll be right over there with my popcorn (and salt, cuz ya's made me think about that).

:pop:

Besides the claims of being more stable than the old fashioned freebase nicotine, it is supposed to be much "smoother" and allow vapers to use a higher % in their juice without the harsh, raw throat hit. By using a higher % in your juice you will get that "jolt" you used to get from the ol' cigs and supposedly vape less. Personally, I would try it because of the stability factor. My goal is to eliminate nicotine but I will continue vaping because I really enjoy the flavors. It has been a long road for me from 1 1/2 to 2 PAD (with spikes to 4 PAD) and many times it felt like pushing a car...uphill....with a rope!

Nicotine is present in crystalline form in the tobacco leaves, it is the "stable" form. The point most everyone forgets to mention is the need of a catalyst for the nicotine crystals (salts) to be assimilated (absorbed) in the blood stream. I think I remember reading elsewhere that JUUL uses a form of benzoate in their e-liquid.

You can convert your normal freebase nic to nicotine salt by adding the correct amount of benzoic acid (an organic acid) to it, which converts some or all of the nicotine into nicotine benzoate (ie a salt). There are a number of advantages to this, but the main one would be to enable high (in the order of 50mg/ml) nicotine in a smaller, low powered device but have it still be effective without giving you a huge throat hit.

I've made it myself ... but there's more info in the nicotine thread on this forum, plus other forums

I tried a nic salts pos type device (the Juno). It was a MTL stick along the lines of the Juul. The Nic was 36 mg... I suppose if I wanted to quit smoking, this might have been a better way. However, as I quit way back with regular juice, I found this kit to be far too strong for my style of vaping and I was nic sick in a few hits... Nic salts are not for me...

OK, thanks. So what would be my incentive for tripling my cost?
I have 20 years or so of regular nicotine stored and I have no problem using it. The hubby still feels like he isn't getting enough and still duel using. Honestly, much of this comes down to his own motivation, he likes making out with the bottom of the ashtray. If I mix him higher nic liquid, say 12mg and above, it's too harsh for him and there's a great deal of flavor loss. I ordered a small amount of the nic salts to see if I can't increase the strength of his liquid while still maintaining flavor and smoothness. He vapes such a low volume that cost really isn't an issue and would be worth every penny if it helps him smoke less or quit. If I were stocking up I may feel differently, but I've already got a stockpile that makes me feel secure. If the experiment fails I'm only out $20.

I totally agree with you, had this been available waaaay back when I bought my first Spinner II, I would still be on the nic. salts train.
I don't think I want to play with either organic or inorganic acids other than a Acetic Acid solution (5%) so I will not convert freebase nicotine to salts any time soon. The info provided by gt_1955 is great and since I'm a inquisitive type, I will go diggin' in the nicotine thread.

You've got chutzpah to mix a full liter on a first try with salts. I will try salts but I'll take a timid 10 ml first step before going full bore. Just my two pence here.
ha, yeah that's me but the feedback from it has been positive, matters not though as you can't buy it in the UK anyway and shipping costs and customs charges just doesn't make it worth it.

Absotively, posilutely.....or something like that. I agree with you, I believe nic salts were researched and ultimately used in the most current version of AIO devices precisely because it allows the manufacturer to use a high % nic juice in a relatively low powered device without the harsh throat hit.

Hubby also takes wimpy fairy puffs so increasing the nic to a much higher level may help him get the nic he needs.

And I will never ever let him see that I referred to his vaping style as fairy puffing.

Edit to add, and I hate that I even feel the need to clarify, that I mean the sprightly winged creatures and not the derogatory slang meaning.

Don't worry, it'll be "OUR" secret! He is actually vaping like a smoker. There was a statement I read elsewhere that vaping nic salts juice is (and should) be different than vaping freebase nic juice specifically because of its smoothness at high levels.

You've got the groundwork for a new thread there!

I vape FOR the throat hit. So for that reason, I am out.
(It always makes me feel like a billionaire when I saw that)

I guess we'll find out (if the postal service ever decides to locate my package :-x).

It took 24mg for me to quit. It also took about 9 months for my taste buds to recover.

Thanks, gt. That's good info and a good start to a research project for those that believe the salts would be an improvement to what we normally vape now in nic base. (did I see someone call it "old fashioned"? ;) )

The Nicotine Comparisons thread is truly a valuable one. I believe I first found it back in 2012?

As did I, Shawn. When the Juul first came out, they graciously gifted my local club with many of them for us to try. Sadly, we all had the same experience as you. It certainly was not a "harsh" hit, but it was dizzy making, to put it mildly. Suddenly vaping 36mg (or even 50mg) was too intense for most, and made everyone nic sick.

Great info, thank you.

 brewbear.

For me, one of the finest and most advantageous aspects of nic delivery with a higher PG percentage and a moderate (subjective) nic level, was precisely the TH that came along with it. Had I not had that, I may not have stayed with vaping.

To each, choice.

I know little of benzoate or forms of, but I did catch this post from Kurt which gave me great pause.

It looks like they are coming to the UK Nicotine Salts | JAC Vapour. For me, the more throat hit the better so I'll probably not try them :nah:
