Oh wow, I don't know which I like better, they both look so good. I'm really interested in trying this. I wonder, too, if the colors will become more pronounced with clear coating. If I remember correctly this rainbow patina can be used on stainless as well. I'm thinking the natural brightness of stainless would bring out some pretty good color as well. Thanks for posting those pics glasseye!

The brass sheet arrived from ebay and I glued it onto an aluminum door. I used superglue and the ammonia and sea salt destroyed the superglue, so after the clear coat I glued it back on again. BTW this particular brass can polish up to the closest to a mirror finish I have ever seen from a metal.

Thanks everyone for sharing inspiration and techniques :)

Here are some quick pictures with the Rainbow patina. I like the flamed ones better, but to be fair, the metals weren't perfectly flat and neither was the old cruddy cookie sheet, so you can see where the patina puddled (user error to be sure). Also I wouldn't do that in a home oven too often or it could eat away the coils.

Very nice, I think I like the soft flame ones better.

Great pattern! did you treat the outside different than the center?

No, it all got the same treatment, but I didn't suspend it on wires, just let it sit overnight on the wet paper towel in a sealed plastic container. I think the edges stayed wet from the ammonia more so than the center.

I finally have success! LOL! I finally tried again last night. This time I used cat litter, salt and ammonia and shazam, I finally have a patinated door! Not brass, it's copper, but who cares right? :D

I've got two more doors soaking now in the cat litter, this time with mustard/vinegar/ammonia and the other with ammonia/vinegar. I hope they turn out.

That is really beautiful!
Have any of you tried the boiled egg? Heard about it on another thread and am seriously thinking about it!

I used Tidy Cats clumping litter. I placed the door on a layer of it, sprinkled the salt on, covered the door with more litter and then sprinkled with ammonia. I'm seriously considering trying out used cat litter. Have I shocked anyone into silence yet lol! My reasoning is that cat urine would be the purest form of all natural organic ammonia available and *should* work better than any store bought ammonia. I googled the idea and people actually do this, cat pee patina. If it works I'll let you know!

Um... why cat? You could use fresh litter and then just pee on it, no? You could control the application more that way. (hey, you went there first)
