It is my belief that for a variety of reasons the White House.gov petition is a waste of time. The chief reason being, what is the end game here? Essentially, this boils down to, us as a community telling the POTUS, "The FDA is scaring us, make them stop".
There are no regulations at this time, we have no clue what the regulations will be. And we may not see them for some time. So what is President Obama to do? The only thing he can do, pat us on the head and tell us "it'll be ok".
This is not merely to criticize.
The far more effective avenue open to us, is contacting our members of congress. Congress has the real power.
I know, most will say that they agree, this should be done too, how many threads are currently going on ECF about this? Exactly. So when the petition results in a canned response from our President, don't feel disenfranchised, get angry, then channel that anger.
Educate your congressmen, email them links, send them info packets, call them on the phone. Chances are your representatives office gets a couple of calls per day from their home district, they'll pay attention if they get 15, 20 calls in a single day. This has worked time after time.
Here are a couple of links to help you get started.
