Swing as its mothers day I thought it would be a good time to ask. My mom has been smoking for 20 some odd years or so now and she's tried to quit several times to no avail. She's skeptical of vapeing but open to it enough that I think with the right set up and juice she could make the switch. Any advice on where to start her at? She smokes 2-3 packs a day

Just joined myself and just recently started vaping. I have smoked for over 30 yrs and am also trying to replace smoke with vapor. You mom will have to feel comfortable and get the desired effect from the vapor in order to quit smoking. I tried the pen, all in one style e cig first and it didn't quite do it for me. I smoked 2 packs a day and have not had one in the week now that I have moved on to a bigger tank/mod set up, giving me more than the pen.

I started vape on an open minded whim and quit the 30 yr cigs when I found the right nicotine level. For me it was 12mg (lights). I started on a cheap blister pack and gas station juice. After I tried the juice I liked it so much I kept upgrading. Finding a flavor she would enjoy is important. There's only 1000 to choose from. If you can take her to a vape shop and get her to sample some flavors it would probably help. You can easily get a nice inexpensive starter set just about anywhere, or shop online like most of the ecf users do. Check out these links for starter sets :

I'll tell you about my dads experience on this and take it for what it's worth. 2 packs a day for as long as I can remember and I'm 23. Dipped as well at the same time. Chantix failed, patches and gum failed too. Using the pen style devices with tanks with restrictive airflow made him hate vaping. Absolutely finds flavors disgusting and doesn't like the smell of them.

The eGrip worked to get him started, but the solder points of the charging port is pathetic and broke after a week on 2 eGrips and customer support is nonexistent from Joyetech.

He has an iStick 50w (Granted a 30w would do just fine). He is also using my old v1 Atlantis. Love the tank, the airflow, the mod. Everything about it from size to battery life. He vapes unflavored nic base. 60vg/40pg 18mg nicotine. He says instantly unflavored tastes the closest to a Marlboro light and he loves unflavored. He is now 2 months no cigarettes. Unflavored doesn't destroy coils either like flavored e-juices does, so cotton and coils can last longer from my personal observations.

Good for you, j.swain!

The EP is, iirc, a fixed voltage device. Similar form (square tube vs. cylindrical) would be the Innokin VV3 or 4, which lets you adjust the power to suit the coil value and the flavor. (Different flavors don't all taste best at the same power level.) Or even the Spinner types - cylindrical - let you adjust the voltage.

Top coils, like you say you're using, tend to vape a little warmer than bottom coils. And may require the tilt and twirl action to keep the wick saturated, since they work against gravity. So something to consider - for both of you :)

If she decides to take the plunge, flavor and nic level are keys to success. Too low a nic and she won't get the same "satisfaction."

Ask her to look at different equipment online. A great site is Discount Vapers. Kind of guide her through the ones she likes visually and point out the pros and cons. This will also be an education session so she understands the different types of ecigs and components there are. She doesn't have to decide on the spot, as there is not pressure from a sales person at a vapor store trying to make a sale.

You can't go wrong though with a Twist or Vision Spinner with an Evod glass clearo. It's not outrageously expensive but it's enough for her to make up her mind whether vaping will work for her or not. The other big component is the flavored juice. Find a vendor that has reasonably priced ejuices. I have been buying my ejuice from Vape Wild for 9 months now and I love them. The flavors are awesome and you get free shipping and freebies.

EDIT: Depending on how many cigarettes she smokes and what brand, start her with 18mg to 24 mg nic. Get some bottles of the same flavor juices at 0 nic in case the nic is too high for her.

As with most things and people there are different ways people go.
She may take to vaping straight away or may be on the fence.
Some people are good on the first device they try others have to try a few.

As you can see by this forum there is obviously something helping us all.

Welcome j.swain!

My mom is 76 and she smoked a pack and a half a day. What got her off cigs was a VW device (iStick 50 though she has no use for all that power...30 would have been plenty), a decent quality tank (Nautilus) and a couple of juices she loves (that was the hard part).

Unless she inhaled cigarettes straight to lung (probably not), stay away from toppers designed for lung hits (Subtank, Atlantis, etc.). You can always move on to that later if that's what she ends up liking.

The above is good choices, but also consider the new Egrip 2 from Joyetech. I don´t know if they have fixed the problems with the usb charging port on version 1(I haven´t had issues) but I guess it will be kind of stupid if they hasn´t.
I got my mother in law started vaping on the version 1 Egrip and she is not looking back after 30 years :)

Start her off with a mid-size; the mini probably won't be very effective for her and a mod will probably be intimidating and she might not like how bulky it is. She's a really heavy smoker, so I'd start her at 18mg or even 24 mg to ensure her cravings are satisfied. You can take her to a shop so she can test out different flavors to find one she likes. Might not be a bad idea to start her off with tobacco flavored juices; True Leaf Vapor has an awesome line of tobacco flavors (trueleafvapor.net).

Good luck, hope you're successful in getting her to switch!

Every new person is different. My wife and I started vaping after 40+ years of very heavy smoking. Now this was nearly 3 years ago and much has changed since then.

We both started on cig-sized batteries (Volt from Smokeless Image) and cartomizers. Most people (myself included) would advise against that, but it is possible that that form factor could be more comfortable to long term older smokers...feels more like a cigarette. My wife liked that she could get lots of colors and gem stone end caps...bling it up a bit. Might have kept her interested...you know, accessorizing.

We both moved on to ego-sized and clearos within a few months, and that is where my wife stopped upgrading. She has been content with all of her different colors of egos and T2 clearomizers for over 2 years. I of course have a plethora of tanks and mods...and drawers full of stuff I have retired.

Liquid was the hardest part...those taste buds keep changing, especially in the first few months. My wife and I started at 24 mg and slowly cut down...we are at 6 mg now.

I would suggest I trip to a vape shop. There is nothing better than sampling liquids and handling the devices...that way you can find out what she would be comfortable using.

If you live near your mom, this could be a great chance for you to explore stuff also.

If she's not taking the plunge herself and instead being led to it by you, she may need more time and options to explore. Get a few things you think might work for her. Some transition with tobacco flavors, some with fruit, some with other savory things like tea. Leave your backup kit with her for a bit. Find out what she did or didn't like. (Too finicky to refill, tastes like poo, too tight, too loose, too big). If she's willing to give it a try, don't worry about the quitting part just yet. If she tries this and that, she'll learn what it's about. Hopefully, in a little while, she'll ask you "Is there something that's kinda like that last thing, but a bit more XYZ, or with the thingy that the other one had?" In the process, you might end with some spare juice and tanks. Not all bad.

If you have a shop close by, certainly let her handle different mods. Some people have finicky hands, and what feels good to one person is a ball and chain to another. You might consider an Innokin VV3/VV4 (the 4's have slightly longer battery life, but are a touch longer than the 3's) It's a very light-weight, but capable device. There are iSticks and mini iSticks (again - form factor.)

Absolutely have her taste juice - I was a menthol smoker for 25-ish years, but I don't care much for tobacco-y flavors (at least not at first.) I was more enamored with desserts, vanillas, chocolates, and fruits (and still am today.) Couple different nic levels - higher probably sounds up her alley at this time.

Just remember that SHE is the one who will have to WANT to quit. You can't force her, but you can be a great example :)

Good luck!

Get her something pink thats how i got my gf to quit as long as its feminine looking she loves it. All jokes aside if shes tried multiple times to quit then the will to do is there. I think she will enjoy vaping after she gets over the whole its not the same as smokeing mind set. A nautilus comes to mind with the cotton bvc coils should be easy enough to maintain for her. Maybe a istick or something along those lines plug to charge like a phone nice and simple and leaves a little room to grow in the future. Far as juice shes a heavy smoker im thinking 24mg to start out with and ask her what flavors she likes like fruits ,deserts etc and go from there. Also you could goto a b&m with a flavor taste bar if its allowed in your area. Give her ample time test so she dont rush and get any flavor just to get out of there.
