the harder something is, the higher gloss it can obtain, and more importantly retain...delrin is fairly soft compared to ultem so I'm not so sure exactly how high gloss I can get the delrin to be, nor how easy it might be for it to scratch easily at a high gloss... I'd have to play with it a bit more to answer that completely.

delrin is not necessarily so far way down the road tbh, I mean I can actually do delrin now, I just haven't made it any kind of priority really. I'll probably do a couple of delrins with the next batch of ultems I machine, but right now most of my focus is on building the ultimate ultem heat treating setup.

so far I've ordered the main oven chamber which I already got tracking on but it hasn't hit the system yet to see the expected arrival date. I've also pretty much settled on the microprocessor I'm going to use too. after way too much research I finally found a really nice setup that has a PC interface for programming, monitoring and data logging from an industrial automation processing company and I'm going to be putting that package all together today and ordering it tonight. ideally I'd like to be actually building the whole oven thing by this coming weekend depending on if I can get all the deliveries in time for that

Thanks for the info!:thumb:
No rush just curious. I know what you mean about softer materials. Hi gloss will show all the surface scratches on black Delrin I'm sure. I'm planning ahead for the little lady. I'm sure she will go for white delrin and she likes shiny so I'm thinking glossy white would not show scratches as much. Doing my homework, happy wife...happy life!

I suggest these two things:

1) https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B001BHGC7G
2) https://smile.amazon.com/Renaissance-XTL-8004-Wax-Polish-65ml/dp/B003AJWN62

You can probably use other wax, but I had this on hand and it does a fantastic job on my delrin mods. It builds up over time and creates a protective coating.

Thanks Penq. I have & use the Renaissance wax on my regulated Koa woodvil . How are your delrin mods holding up? My lady and I are not real rough on our mods but they do get an occasional drop now and then.

I have knocked them over many times. If I get scratches on them, I use the polishing paper and they come right out. I did polish them with the wax once a week for about a month. Now, it is about once a month or two depending upon how much use they get.

wow that's a beauty peng :)

I've treated this heat treating process as an emergency situation since I realized it's necessity last Thursday, spent the next few days researching equipment and deciding what to buy to develop this process. I was able to switch the oven chamber delivery from ups ground to fedex because they're ground delivery is faster than ups, and I also ordered the controller and other electronics stuff fedex too, so today I winded up receiving everything. I also went to sears last night and picked up another tool box to be used as a base for this oven so now I've got a garage full of big boxes to play with, gonna be a busy weekend for sure :)

all week I've been cramming an MIT online course to learn how to tune PID loops, still have several lessons to complete but I'm almost there with that part. it's been a crazy week in trying to get all of this to come together as quickly as possible.

I've got a few PM's to answer and I've got to update the list with the few requests here and through pm's, I'll get to all that a little later today so bear with me, I'll reply to all later today
