Minimalsaint: if that's true about it being shot, why am I now getting an ohm reading?
the couple of times it has happened with mine they never stood up after I put current through it again. .
If you have a multimeter, check the resistance from the pos. Pin from the top screw to the bottom of the pin where it passes through the 510 connector.
spending money on this hobby is never gonna end... is it...![]()
It need not be removed- the genny is still a functional unit with the spring- it just performs better without it. I will pull one of mine apart tonight after the kids go to bed and show you what I've done and also what you might be able to do with what you have available.
They are definitely not beginner devices but good for getting your feet wet. With a couple of little tweaks it performs as well as the best gennies available (in my opinion).
Hang tight! I'll do my best to help you through it!
OK here goes...
You know what your base looks like with the center tube removed and the spring in place:

So then. We are going to take a piece of 1mm copper wire and cut it to just under 8mm (if you have enough and nothing to measure, you can wing it):

Use a file (girlfriend / wife's nail files work in a pinch) to flatten the ends for better contact and drop the copper pin into the spring:

Put it all back together and BAM! Solid center post capable of handling low resistance and shorts without collapsing.
I didn't have a needle to spare so I didn't try that, but I have heard they work very well. Personally, I went a little overboard:
I used the same 1mm copper wire but instead of the spring, I used 2mm x .04mm flat silver stock:

And wrapped it around the copper wire. I left a hollow space at the bottom so it would sit on the tapered end of the center post, just like the spring would:

Essentially it is the same as the spring, just a little more fancy.
And there you have it. My center spring fix for the AGI.
If you don't have the stuff to do any of this, PM me your address and I will send you everything. Sitting here tonight I just made another center post- I would be more than happy to drop it in the mail for you!
Was that ekowool? How the heck did you fit it through the wick hole? I gave up on it, it wouldn't fit!
I think you're off to a good start. Took me a week or so of frustration before I got a "good" wick/coil.
You might want to try a silica sleeve, or hollow ekowool, something like this:
XS-18 Silica Sleeving - Kidney Puncher
You put that over the top part of your wick,
and wrap the coil around that. Makes things easier. Some people just don't like what this does to the
flavor, but I can't tell a difference.
edit:
here's a photo of one of my builds using this method.
This is on an I-Chybrid but the concept is the same for any
genesis style device.
