The government considers me disabled as of January 07 (spent 2 yrs before that barely working cause I didn't know what was wrong). Before that I was a small engine tech. My application didn't get approved till October 08 though. Hell of a period to have no income, thank god my wife works. Had to fight and fight to get it. All they saw when they looked at my application was a 21 year old kid. Been living with schizophrenia for a while now, at least they finally got that figured out. Now I just do what I can to keep from losing it from sitting at home all day (might of lost it a long time ago)

I also am unemployed, I have been unemployment since March '08 I have tried looking for work all of last year and part of this year as well with no luck. My husband is working full time while going to school full time. He is also a disabled veteran from the Air Force. I am not looking for right now cause I am trying to have knee surgery. I was fired from my last job, I worked for Gamestop (which really sucked), I was fired for being sick which made no sense. But to my ex boss said the reason was job abandonment which is totally untrue. But anyway I do feel for all of you who are unemployed.

Lost my job as well back on may 4th, third round of layoffs in an aerospace company here in so cal. Engineering degree with 18 years experience. 2 months of resume submitting, hitting the pavement and nothing. living on unemployment and savings suck. they say when it rains it pours a month after my lay off June 7th my father passed, he didn't plan for it so me and my bro had to pay the burial and expenses and have to deal with all his loose ends while trying to keep my composure as well as try to find a job. I feel for you all and I hope times change soon......

on the bright side if I was still employed I would have not found this site and started vaping, that to me is seeing the silver lining.

I was a Assistant Service manager for a franchise car dealership untill last week.
Was approached a few months ago for a offer to partner on operating a "upstart" small car lot. I have now accepted and after pitching my addictive habit as a additional product to offer, its going to be a used car and new vapor store (offline). Ive personally converted dozens of people to vaping that i met at work,so i think theres a local market for it.
Figured its as good as time as any to make a go of running my own biz. Its very exciting. Two things I enjoy.Cars and vaping. And my partner/backer likes the idea of income from two sources..In case one is slow (or banned).
Hopefully my timing isnt terrible with this new FDA crap.

I was at an union shop for GM that closed 5 years ago. Being in Michigan, job wise things sucked then, little lone now. I work for a few construction contractors now, and that is getting pretty damn slow.
We had inherited our house, so we are real lucky in that regards. I used my severance pay to pay off my car (son then totaled), and now only have our living expenses to fret about.

The reason I decided to post is as I was reading this thread I was watching Letterman. A comedian on the show said "I don't want the economy to collapse, but if it does it won't be a huge adjustment for me."
Well said!!

I am an unemployed plumber. I have been off since July of 08. My Girlfriend was laid off as well in February of 09. We have been applying on line and pounding the pavement with no luck whatsoever. We're still doing okay financially but it won't last forever. I hope it gets better soon for everyone involved in this. Also, I love Starbuck's coffee!

I was technically laid off about the third week of November. The only thing saving my behind right now is that earlier in the month I had a back injury that is paying me workman's compensation. That's about the only thing keeping me alive at the moment. But this only happened in the last couple of weeks as I've had to go to court numerous times to get the money the insurance company was supposed to pay because of my injury. I'm still suffering a lot of pain. But the courts only just recently awarded me the money I was supposed to be getting. But for the last 8 months I have been living with the support of my wife and my family. It barely covered my rent and utilities. But I'm glad that I had my family to help me out. At least now I have what's owed coming to me plus interest and payments until my back is healed. But as others I have been currently looking for jobs and it's rough out there.

i feel like a fool.. i quit my job with a design/construction management company (i worked on contract proposals in the office) in september of 08.. haven't been able to find a job since. cost of living (it was in dc, i'm from CA), me hating the northern virginia area, and the job sucking were all contributors.

Well, sorry I cant cheer up the crowd. i run a crew for my uncles company. We build custom houses, 500,000 to 1.5 million range. so u can imagine how good were doing right now. in 12 years, weve never not had work. this is the first time. normally, right now, we would have at least 6 crews going with 5 men a crew. right now, not one of us working. ive been on unemployment since march, first time ever. on it for 2 months, back to work for a month, and now back on it for the last 6 weeks. luckily in PA, i have 8 weeks left for first claim. Then we get a 33 week extension. which would take me to may of next year. if we still arent building. Id get a last ditch 13 weeks of coverage, while looking for a new job. Since im family, i would get the work before others, but it is really bad right now. anyone need a house built, willing to travel. ha ha.

I was laid off on 23 December, '08 along with 400 others. Still looking for work. I work in Information Technology from desktop support to server administration to IT Security. I worked for a fortune 500 company and had just received a raise in pay two weeks before the lay off. The company decided that my co-worker and my jobs could be done by our (less than competent) counterparts in Malaysia to save money.

Now that the money has run out I'm starting to worry . . .

My formal training is as an electronics tech, and I've been thinking of going back to that, but it's been a long time since I've done electronics work.

One reason I started vaping was to stop smoking. I figured that stinking of cigarette smoke isn't good when interviewing.

Lost my Job today. I have been working at a Independent auto auction for a little over 2 years. Every Christmas the company has a big party and gives everyone a dollar raise until this past Christmas. This past Christmas we got nothing No raise nothing. They said due to the recession that cut backs needed to be done. A month later they had cut me 8 hours a week and laid off 3 other guys in my department. Since then they started to ask more and more from me with zero extra compensation for the much extra work but I bit my tongue and gave them my 100%. I gave a inch and they took a yard. In the past few months they went to the extreme and made me do a ton of unethical dirty out of my job description duties. I continued to bite my tongue and decided to look for another job with little success. Today I was told I was being let go because they had found out that I was looking for work elsewhere. In the right the work state that's how it is. Welcome to Florida. The locals have a few sayings. Come down on vacation and leave on probation. And the other is Tourists go home but leave your daughters. Man I hate this state right now and I'm not liking my country as a whole right now. :grr:
Everyone keep your chin up, We'll be OK.

Hang in there everyone. After September 11, 2001, my job was outsourced to India. Since then I've been working for Uncle Sam in the Dept. of Homeland Security.

They are hiring - all backgrounds... Try USAJobs.gov or TSA.gov

Good Luck.

But the thing is, do you have to have a college degree for a lot of those jobs? :(

I was a cafe manager. I had been laid off at the end of last September. Luckily I am an audiophile and had about 10k worth of stereo equipment laying around. I was able to sell my stash piece by piece until I found 2 jobs at the beginning of summer.

I work in a chemistry lab during the week at a community college, instructing labs for students and setting them up and so forth.

I also work for Plano Molding on the weekends. So if you're wondering who made that tackle box or gun case you own... It was probably me.
