lol duncan.... thanks for asking. hate to say it but i still feel like crap..... i walked in there this week and basically said the heck with it. im not going to waste my time or my breath on this man. part of it was i was dragging my tail so badly i was lucky to get in there at all. i just didnt need the stress of it all. no i havent found a new dr. and at this point im not hunting. its just one more thing to do with an already overloaded work schedule while im trying to feel better. adds stress that i just cant afford right now. fibro is beating me up already and the stress adds to that fight too. i have to pick my battle wisely right now and hes just not worth it.... now if he chooses to bring the subject up i will have no choice but to go at it with him but for now hes keeping his mouth shut and so am i. i know im being totally stupid..... hugh
Remember that doctors are also people. They have their own perspectives, many of which will not entirely relate to you and that is the fundamental problem with placing too much importance on what they say. I can't count on both hands and toes how many people I know who have been harmed by careless advice/information/PRESCRIPTIONS from doctors. Your doctor can be just as misinformed, misguided, or malicious as any person because he is just that: a person. I'm not saying that doctors are full of crap and shouldn't be trusted; that would be dumb for obvious reasons. Just remember they aren't robots with perfect responses. Kudos to you for trying to educate him on the matter. I'll be following your example here shortly. If you have the time or patience, educate anyone you can about this.

Don't let his negativity get you down. I can tell you as a very physically active person, I feel better after a week of vaping than I did when I quit analogs cold-turkey for 8 months (I get to keep my low stress levels without destroying my respiratory system :D).

Also, us Americans must realize we live in a capitalist society with capitalist ideals. Smoking generates....... a LOT of revenue for national and state governments, big-pharma, and especially big-tobacco. E-Cigs are stepping on the fiscal toes of all of them so don't be surprised when you start seeing ideals and campaigns which vilify them and, ultimately, policies passing against them (gotta love lobbyists with infinitely deep pockets!). Many doctors are on the "....-end" of paychecks and bonuses from all of these sources so naturally a lot of them have stakes in this business as well. It's up to you to determine if your doctor cares more about his patient or more about that fourth of his salary coming, directly or indirectly, from Pfizer.

I'll add one correction. It should be:

Smoking generates....... a LOT of revenue for big-pharma, big-tobacco, and especially national and state goverments.

The average state tax on a pack of cigarettes is $1.45. The national tax is $1.01 per pack. The cigarette companie make between $0.37 and $0.51 per pack.

so where does this snus come from that everyone talks about and exactly what is it.

There is a whole subforum about it here on ecf Smokeless tobacco

It is smokeless tobacco. The swedish snus has been extensively tested, and has dropped cancer rates enormously in Sweden.

the problem is they arent allowed to even practice anymore. they may know what to do but i suspect they know it isnt going to be covered by insurance so why even go there. in most cases insurance cos are the problems not drs. but that is what happened yrs ago when they decided that insuance cos should be allowed to be for profit cos. a lot changed.

im really bummed out. i went to the dr today and he asked me how long i had been vaping. i told him proudly 2 months. he looked at me in horror and said 2 months!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! why didnt u just do the patch. ud be done by now and nicotine/tobacco free. is this the way it goes with drs? or was this just a really bad experience. i didnt even know what to say to him. i havent had a real cig in 1 1/2 months. i smoked 2 packs a day for 25 yrs. i thought hed be just a little supportive and he just thought i was nuts. has anyone else experienced any of this. what did u say. how do u handle drs. i was just at a loss for words.....

I always get this sense that Doctors take the safest 'legal' and conservative position. As if they must be careful not to say anything 'condoning' nicotine addiction.
'Ideally' you should not be addicted to nicotine. Even though you are WAY WAY improved he still can't say he approves.

I think its terrible the response you got and I was thinking the better response might be something like "Yeah.. well I must say you still ought to end the nic-addiction but I'm very happy you stopped smoking".

He hasn't said anything to come back on him later. He can't be accused of 'advising you to vape' but he is making a supportive sort of 'realistic' response.

Oh well.. you know the difference and you know your health is better now so just keep your head up and stay psyched!

I was following the patch program. I had stepped down once. But the patch started leaving a red spot on my arm in the exact shape of the patch. I called their 800 number and explained what was happening and they told me to stop using it. I was so dissapointed, I wanted to finish the program but they told me the only recommendation they could give me was to stop using it. Apparently the nicotine had built up in my system to the point I was having some sort of a reaction to it.

I also had a friend that was using the patch, and although you're not supposed to smoke when you're using the patch, he did. He went into convulsions and had to goto the hospital.

I would not recommend the patch to anyone. In my opinion one of the problems with the patch is it gives u a constant supply of nicotine. More nicotine than you actually need. With vaping you can just use it when you want it, not constantly. Also if you happen to smoke a real cigarette it won't kill you. :p

that is complete insanity...you would think that a medical professional would research something like this and support it completely...the patch is a steaming pile of doodie, chantix bums you out, nicotine gum is a joke...if e cigarettes were never invented, I would still be smoking right now...I can't even fathom a doctor not supporting your efforts to quit...

the medical profession doesn't seem to be what it used to be...sure we have more medicine and MUCH better chances of surviving diseases that used to kill people by the millions but now we have the fda and corporate fat cats lining eachothers pockets...when you research big pharm it's really depressing...it's not all about us anymore...it's all about making as much money as possible

and of course there are still a ton of good doctors out there, who really care about their patients...but now the corporate boogie man, snake oil salesmen turned legitimate who have a ton of money, a ton of power and a ton of influence over the medical profession...it really sucks but all you have to do is be aware of it...everyone is not out to get you, but not everyone has your best interests in mind...

no the medical community isnt what it ussed to be. i feel for the drs. they have the med insurance cos tieing their hands behind their back. then they have a bunch of sue happy ppl on the other end waiting to charge them with malpractice if something doesnt end up exactly the way they want. i dont envy drs. however u would think they could appreciate those of us that are trying to quit analogs

hearing all of these success stories is quite inspiring.

i'd imagine this would be quite useful to hand to any doctor that has any qualms with people completely quitting tobacco with e-cigs. even if the user doesn't plan to stop vaping, the evidence insists that the risks involved with vaping are miniscule compared to smoking tobacco. along with pg having germicidal properties? i'll take my chances with vaping, thank you very much.

after reading that article, if your doc still insists that you quit vaping and use meds/patch/gum, call him a quack and switch to someone who actually has your best interest in mind.

Hello everyone, My Dr is who I learned about the e-cig from and a yr & 3months later still supports me. I'm very thankful she suggested as well as gave me a priscription for Chantix. Her main concern was for me to quit smoking and I believe it's important to have you Dr support you especially when it come to something like quitting smoking which we all know is very hard... Yea we've all tried the patches, gum, lozengers and if they had worked so well we would have all quit a long time ago because I know I really didn't enjoy spending my hard earned money on a pk & 1/2 at $7.56 a pack hibit. I personally started the e-cig and never looked back and it was in one of those kiosks at mall YES Smoking Everywhere:( that I purchased my first e-cig and what a nightmare. After taking it back every other day and surviving their liquids i started doing some research found the 510 which was the greatest thing since sliced bread :) E-cigs have definitely come a long way even just since a yr ago so please hang in there and after working for a "DR" for quite some time most believe they know "everything".... Also keep in mind who you're doing this for... The Doctor?
