Vyilla,

Very well placed letter there :)

Lets hope someone reads it and is compelled to push a follow up story. There are a few things in that story that are a bit scary, only because of the reporters emphasis on certain words.

The masses for the most part are un-informed, and if media raises any "question" they will side with it.

I forget now(forgive me), but a member of this board in VA was interviewed by a local station and gave a barebones/bottom line interview of how the "e-cig" has affected her life. We need more media coverage like that :)

Good response Yvilla - I too hope they will make a correction (and that this correction reaches all that looked...)

One small remark: I think you are off with the safety-remark: 2 to 3 magnitude safer is not 1/10th to 1/100th (10 to 1% of the tobacco-harm), but it's 1/100th to 1/1000th (1 to 0.1% of the harm). (But if you have allready sent it: oh well, allready better then they said at least :) )

Hi Katink, as I wrote the email I thought I remembered the figure as 1 to 2 orders of magnitude safer. Now I checked again, and you're absolutely right - Dr. Payne and others have said 2 to 3 orders of magnitude! Darn. I should have double checked before I sent it.

Whats funny is they recommend the NY Quit Line. I was told by one of there workers, That I was a hopeless case.:(

My guess is the NY quit line would not recommend the e-cig because it works and they would be out of a comfy Gov Job.

Give me a Job working there and I will lead in cessation's #'s within a week.:)

This story does show how we need to better organize up-state. If there is peoples out there PM me. Syracuse area.

Im about a 5 minute drive to the 13news station. I wish I had known about it too. I have said before, these docs get on the air and quickly say these dont help people quit smoking, and are not designed to do so. The media needs consumers to refute the former. It is in that context that I think these news stories are one sided.
And another funny thing: I emailed all the Rochester news channels two months ago, along with my personal story, as a consumer. Not a seller, not a distributer, not a doctor. I furnished my home phone, cell phone and personal email for contacting me. No one emailed me when they decided to break the story.
My best,
-VP

Visited their website and attempted to post the following comment:

I agree that E-cigarettes deserve more research and regulation. In fact, as a consumer of this product, I wouldn't mind paying a tax on the nicotine fluid.

I take exception to the doctor's statements about the unknown effects that the other ingredients may have. As your own reporter stated, Propylene glycol "PG" is the primary constituent of the nicotine fluid. What she failed to mention, (I know how deadlines are) is that it is used in most asthma inhalers. This can be confirmed by contacting any compounding pharmacy. PG is also used in commercial fog machines. Research conducted in NY shows that PG is an effective bacteriacide and has been used in it's vapor form to sanitize hospitals. Long term exposure studies have shown no ill effects and it is FDA approved for inhalation therapies.

Aside from water, PG, and nicotine, the only other constituents are flavorings which also bear FDA approval for human consumption.

Much of the recent furor over these products arise from a press release from the FDA, issued shortly after litigation commenced over their seizure of these products.

Professional toxicologists that have reviewed the actual study have been quoted as describing the research and findings as "Questionable" and "Irresponsible"

Claims by less than reputable marketers about health benefits should be considered as such. Most of these marketers also offer "Free Trials" which after reading the fine print, are not free at all. This is a matter for the FTC, not the FDA.

Personally, I have not smoked a cigarette since shortly after starting with this product. I smoked for 42 years and was up to three packs per day. I can't say that I have quit smoking because I will probably have to resume cigarettes if this product becomes unavailable.

Had I become addicted to opiates instead of nicotine, the government would give me free methadone and needles for life. Simply because it's less dangerous. Talk about hypocrites.

I have yet to get the validation e-mail necessary to complete the post.
