Vote on Prop 136 is scheduled for tonight. If any of the Indy vapers have kids who are pleased that their parent has stopped smoking and supports the use of the electronic cigarette, you might want to point this out to the council members that you contact today, whether in person by attending the meeting, or via a phone call or email.

The ANTZ love to bus in a bunch of children that speak up in favor of some type of prohibition. Usually they have prepped the kids with some things to say based on falsehoods. The one that sticks in my memory is the kid who said that she didn't want her parents to use an e-cigarette and get poisoned.

Wouldn't it be nice if a couple of kids got up at a meeting and talked about how much healthier their parents are since switching and how glad they are that their parents don't smoke any more.

Just got home from the meeting. Prop136 is off to the mayor.

Their was a lot of discussion about e-cigs, that's for sure. I'm still trying to process it all frankly.

An amendment to remove the e-cig verbiage was never offered. A lot of discussion was around trying to send it back to committee for more discussion on the wording of the private club issue.

Fear-mongering certainly ensued about e-cigs. "Then tell the industry to stop calling them cigarettes!" was said. The "imagine vapor on your food in a restaurant" argument was given. Then enforcement issue.

Then "show me a peer reviewed study proving that vapor is not harmful to bystanders, and I will revisit this issue..." one councilor said. Well, you opened the door buddy...

I loved it when Vaughn slammed Mahern about his "committees stacked 6-2." Damn straight. It was the only time the crowd clapped. I was clapping as loud as I could in a sea of green Smoke Free Indy people. Haha!

I sat through the beginning of the night and wrote a few words I was hoping to say, should we by some miracle get a chance to speak. An excerpt:

Imagine an Indianapolis where not only are all workplaces smoke free, but also less harm is done to smokers and non-smokers.
Imagine an Indianapolis where new methods to reduce harm from tobacco smoke are not banned out of fear, but are embraced and regulated with wisdom.
Imagine an Indianapolis where less people die from second-hand, and first-hand smoke.

Well anyway, there's my braindump after the meeting.

Yes, disappointing to be sure. Glad I went though. Sure was lots of fun listening to a bunch of "legislators" spout off half-truths, conjecture, innuendos and anecdotal falsehoods.

Can we really forget the councilor that stated that "..eCigs are now being marketed to children" And what was his rational for such an assumption? Why sweet flavors of course! What more proof did he need? Open an shut case right? Obviously, bubble gum flavor=pushing drugs on kids!

I wanted to ask him; Does your logic also apply to flavored alcohols? Are you telling us that by virtue of their containing flavors similar to kids treats they are, by extension, tapping the child market demo?? (oh, for the love of Pete...)

He was also the one that said again, FDA report says eCigs are, and I quote "..bad, bad, bad, bad." (Yay! way to remain willfully obtuse for your agenda!!)

Lets also remember our resident food fear mongers. I can't remember their names (will be refreshing my memory soon though for some letter writing) but they did the same thing tonight as they did during the committee meeting- Yes, they are so convinced that that big mean cloud of vapor is hunting them down and poisoning their food and/or lungs, that they remain purposely ignorant of the content of said cloud. Not only that, and in the same breath of the younger one (the one hell bent on eliminating all owners rights to allow easily avoidable health issues) she loosely cited a study on tobacco cigs that indicated that indoor second hand smoke DOES permeate non-smoking areas! OMG! They must be the same!1!11?!!

I wanted to ask them; How to you conflate the two? Are you telling me that in your infinite wisdom, you have actually drawn a scientific conclusion that two chemically different "clouds" pose similar dangers based on their similarity in appearance?

Huh... Well, apparently there is no need for science courses since that sort of analysis is all that is required. Who knew? I see it, it looks like it's threatening, so it must be so. No really, no need to test any further. Tell Dr. Salk that mold could not possibly used in a vaccine, it looks icky to authoritative bodies such as ours and it's after our food.

That was only the beginning of the short-sighted, bureaucratic non-sense that we had the displeasure of listening to.

There were some bright spots, however fleeting. The one mentioned above that elicited applause and the another female councilor (dang it, I really gotta start concentrating on names!) she mentioned that she has voted NO on all private smoking bans since they first came to the table citing that she understands that her constituency did not vote her in to be a mother. THAT should have received applause. Imagine that, a politician with a brain. I want her for Gov!!

Okay, rant over, sorry- Hopefully everyone will write the mayor now and let him know that it still isn't the right thing to pass. Good luck folks, the war rages on...

Wow!! Reminds me of a Witch Hunt!! "Does she float?"" BURN HER!! (sorry..a little humor there, I am dating myself). I am a Registered Nurse, I own a small store and I vape. I spend countless minutes/hours educating my colleagues about e-cigs. Thank you for the concise letter dis-proving MANY of the common mis-beliefs that are prevalent in our society. I know a few nurse's jobs have been saved because of e-cigs and not having to go out for "sneak breaks", smelling like cigs etc.. They are so "new" here (N.Calif.) Managers are allowing vaping in nurse lounges!! Until some "Anti" spouts off I spose. Anyway, good luck with the fight with small town (mind) politics. Any win is a good win!!

2 great points.

I do agree that more studies need to be done on the exhaled vapor issues. I would, however, like to see them side by side with an analysis of the air we breathe. Mot people are completely ignorant to the fact that there is more to our air than just Oxygen.

I'd really like to send to the Mayor and the Indianapolis city council a list of all the cities, counties, and states that have purposely excluded electronic cigarettes from their smoking bans. And I would include a note congratulating the city council on being the most ignorant bunch of ...... in the entire country.

Do you have such a list? I'd love to see it!

Not having such a list is one of the few things keeping me from sending such a letter.

If CASAA could put together such a list, I would be happy to keep it updated.
But I really don't have the information needed to get it started.

Roger that. Sounded as though you had one already.

Would certainly come in handy wouldn't it?
