USB powering issue

I have a question about my USB passthrough. It works fine on my computer-- not as much power as the charged battery, but pretty good (for my 901 specifically). But, I have a usb adapter that fits in my car lighter slot and that works-- it powers my Zune, for instance. Why can't I smoke through that? It doesn't work as a passthrough when I use it even though it's the same usb cord that I know works because it works with my computer, and I know the adapter works with other things.

Is there a device that would work from my car adapter and let me run my cig off the car power?

Thanks!

It could be it is not strong enough? I think they recommended 1000mAh versus 500mAh and may car USB adapters are at the lower strength. I don't know the correct electrical terminology but that is the idea. Look on the adapter itself and see what the mAh is.

ejfan, mAh is a measurement of capacity, not output.

and this is my 400th post. whoopty doo

See I told you I didn't know . I do remember somewhere that someone said to look for the 1000mAh capacity, I think??? I should probably just keep my fingers shut and not say any more...lol

there's been more than one "discussion" on that issue. lol
even if the output ratings are close sometimes it still won't work.
(extremely hopeful manufacturer labelling)

your heart was in the right place. :)

Yes, you need an output of 1A, or 1000mA. mAh is a measurement of capacity.

mA= milli-amps
mAh= milli amp hours.

But to the point:

There is an easy solution. The USB battery pack that I bought was unfortunately underpowered. 700mA. But it's working like a champ now...

Get a USB-passthrough that has an in-line rechargeable battery. This type is not much more than the ones without... maybe $7 more. They are actually only $15 from David Yang at eastmall, or like $25 from VaporNine.

Anyway... The e-cig will draw the 1mA from your in-line battery, and that will, in turn, recharge itself from your USB charger.

Problem solved.

Plain and simple. Most adaptors for a car 12V system rarely provide more than 500ma of current. I have one that is rated at 700Ma and it barely produces any vapor. My new Kensington Portable Power Pack socks my atomizer with a full 1000Ma+ and anything I attach to it produces loads of vapor. The only time the 1 amp level is not critical may be with the Janty Kissbox pass-thorough. Since it has a battery in-line, the charger is likely providing some recharging current to the battery while the battery is actully heating up the atomizer.

Hmm, well, now I have another question. I just bought stuff from eastmall, so I'm going to wait until I have more to order and I checked vapornine and they only had the kind for the penstyle. So, seeing that I had a KB usb with a battery, I decided to see if that would work with my 901 and found that it did fit.

I took ONE drag, and the atomizer on the 901 got SO HOT that I immediately unscrewed it to save the atomizer.
So, maybe that's TOO MUCH power?

Thoughts?
Thanks.

Well, the Kensington is $54 on Amazon now. I'll look for a better price, but that's probably a decent price.

Would that be TOO much power-- I'm sure the KB passthrough with the inline battery was too much power. . I was sure it was going to kill my atomizer.

Thanks Candygirl.

Also, all of you are so funny-- even with the explanations, I have no idea what any of the power stuff means. I just need straight directions like "buy this. Screw it in this way. Inhale." whenever it comes to technical stuff.

i don't know why you think the KB passthrough would be too much power?
i don't own one but it should be fine.

anyone own one that knows something i don't?

also someone recently posted the Kensington PP was being sold in Best Buy for $39.99.
i'm pretty sure that was the price. might want to take a spin around the web and price shop.

good luck :)

I didn't think that-- I was happy the adapter fit the 901 cig. . . but, the minute I plugged it into the computer, the atomizer started heating up and by the time I finished inhaling it was very very hot-- burning hot. So I had to quickly unplug it and let it cool down. It worked, though, I got lots of vapor, but it was way too hot to continue.

You cannot use a KB USB passthrough with any atomizer without an automatic or manual switch. The KB battery part of the passthrough is ALWAYS on. When you attached the 901, it was firing up non-stop. No wonder it overheated. Common e-cigs like the 901 and most pen-style have automatic pressure switches built into the batteries. When you puff they activate the power. The KB battery has no sitch nor does it have a hole in it. Control of KB batteries and their passthrough comes from the in-line switch (auto or manual).

The Kensington are $53.99 at Best Buy. I just bought one this week. I think the $39.99 was a sale price. You can also get them at TigerDirect.com for $49.99 but with the S/H it works out to about the same as BB give or take a few bucks. I love my Kensington. Works great!

I found an unknown 12 volt dual USB adapter at a Truck Stop made by a company called E Tek. The packaging does not show the ouput, but I know it 1000 mA because it works great. Cost me 9.99, it sells on walgreens web site for 6.99. Have not checked a local wal greens though. I tried many 12 volt USB products and it turns out the cheapest was the best.

Can you post a link?

breakfastchef, THANK YOU for your explanation. Can you or someone clarify something though? Are you saying Janty USB passthroughs aren't interchangeable with other models at all? Or, are you saying I can never use an inline battery usb cord with my 901? I'm just not exactly clear on what you're saying I SHOULD use for this model.

I found the walgreens one: http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp?CATID=306534&navAction=jump&navCount=1&skuid=sku4020802&id=prod4021953# That's kind of what I had already and mine didn't work. Maybe this one is more powerful, though.

I do not own a 901, Kendra, but there are USB pass-throughs specific to that model. The Janty KB battery or USB Pass-through can only be used with an inline automatic or manual Janty switch. You found out quickly what happens if you try to connect an atomizer directly to a KB battery. The only interchangeable part of the Kissbox is the atomizer. You can use most generic pen-style atomizers like the ones you can get from VaporGuys or Puresmoker.
