man we got a lot of us old timers around here...before long we will be talking about using a rotary style phone and watching TV in black and white with an antenna. Of course in a few years the high tech VV devices we use now will seem like a flint lock to the kids

I was following right along with you.....I remember when we got our first color tv....and remember when tv wasn't on all night long ....but then you got to "flint lock".....what's a flint lock?

My avatar is a portrait of James Bond (as played by Sean Connery). My username is the name of the first historian who wrote real history for history's sake (the second historian after Herodotus). It's a name that I gave to my characters in MMORPGs when I played them years ago. Take a look at my profile for a real photo of me.

My name is Mary Lou but it always seems to be taken. So I made it one name and dropped the y.

I've been enjoying all the reminiscing about computers. When my husband died in 1986 I needed something to occupy my mind and decided to try those newfangled computers. (Not all that new, but I had never used one.) I bought an IBM PC w/o a hard drive, DOS disks and the Infocom game "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." The guy who delivered and set up the computer showed me how to start it up (not kidding!) and how to load my game and I was off and running. That game was great fun, revived my sense of humor and I actually solved the darn thing. The advancement in computers in a relatively short time still amazes me. My computer addiction rivals my nicotine addiction.

Re TV memories - 3.. count em 3 chanels.... TV's without the UHF dial.. or was that VHF?

I believe both were made available in the 40's and 50's but UHF was the main frequency.

I remember the national anthem being played every night before the station went off the air.

I can remember our first color TV. When it started going on the fritz, mom would call the repairman and he'd show up with a huge suitcase full of tubes! He kept that thing going for a number of years.

A few years ago my 32" Sony TV finally died. It had to weigh at least a couple hundred pounds. I had a heck of a time trying to get it off the TV stand by myself. I ended up just shoving it off onto a furniture dolly. I went to the store and bought a 42" flat screen that I easily carried into the house by myself. Technology has come a long way for us old timers!

Here is how to say it "Dova"-" Keen". Yes you can call me Dova or you can still call me Chief or Chief Packabowl:lol:

Now that would be rude not to call you by your "given" name but... can I call you Chief Dova?! Just kidding! It's kind of like saying goodbye to an old friend. Oh well... Chief go bye bye. Now... hello to Dovahkiin. ;)

 I remember our 1st TV, and it wasn't color. We had 3 channels, and yep, it had one of those rabbit-ear antennae. We had one phone in the house. It was a rotary wall phone in the kitchen; and we were on a party line.

Re TV memories - 3.. count em 3 chanels.... TV's without the UHF dial.. or was that VHF?

OMG, we actually had to get up and move a dial if we wanted to change the channel.

Just changed my user name. (Chief Packabowl) now the user name goes with my Avatar, meaning Dragon Born.

Oh !! Now we'll all have to learn your new name and try to remember that you used to be Chief. We'll probably forget & call you Chief anyway. :D

The name just came to mind when I created a profile here.
Avatar ... some image I downloaded years ago from somewhere kicking around on my HDD.

Hi Hello World. No, I didn't stutter.
