I've had some good success with vaping back with the eGo type mods and clearomizers and decided to go to the next level by ordering a eleaf with kangertech nano tank, did alright for a while but had a bit of trouble with leaking so I 'upgraded' to a vtc mini and uwell crown after reading all the reviews. Well what can I say but what a terrible experience this has been for me, I have not had one day of comfortable vaping. Sure, it produces pretty strong and smooth vapour after I get the first few dry hits that make me cough like I have asthma. It's like the thing needs to be 'warmed up' before actually running properly, every single time. If I leave it for any more than 30minutes and it cools down, I have to deal with the nightmare dry vapour that leaves nicotine in my mouth sometimes . There's just no way around it, I've tried every watt setting and I've primed the coils as well as possible plus replaced them 5 times (I bought 10 0.5ohm stock coils, they look great). I tried all types of pg/vg ratios and nico levels (3-5 mostly). God forbid someone asks me to try my e-cig unless I take the first few hits, or they will forever be put off by the harsh smoke.

So anyway, should it really be this hard to just find a device that can heat up some liquid on the go? I'm starting to really miss analogs and their simplicity, on top of that I actually coughed less when smoking them.

How did you prime the coils? The crown is one of the hardest to break in and if you don't do it properly it will not treat you well.

The cotton is very dense in these coils and you have to completely saturate it or it won't wick properly
I filled every hole with the liquid until it was fully saturated, then some around the top for good measure. I left it in the tank for 20 minutes and then sucked in the juice without firing the device. I mean, that's about as much work as it should take to get the thing running.

As mentioned there are moments where the vapour is great and smooth, just very, very inconsistent. Perhaps it's also the fault of my VTC mini

the vtc mini can do temperature control, so maybe you should get some temperature controlled coils; like stainless steel coils. ss coils can be used in both wattage mode and temperature mode.

dont' forget to do the firmware upgrade on the vtc mini.

Alex, simply put , id just buy another tank............I can honestly say in the past 7 years ive gone through well over 1k in tanks/atties/clearos,not to mention devices that simply were junk....allot of juice in the mouth as well as fire in the mouth dry hits.......today, thanks to the innovation/competition there are many good toppers out there. Maybe try a isub tank( ive had a few , very simple, great vape, they are the ones I give away to new converts )........others will chime in here with good advice as well..........Yes, smoking is easier.........the tobacco cartel is hedging their bets on that , good luck to you

Some tanks and users just don't get along.

Your length of time Vaping tells me you are comfortable with what you expect.

The crowns long run with satisfied customers tells me it works for most.

Time to find what works for YOU. Unfortunately no one but You can decide that.

Good Luck!

*VTC-mini should have no problem running any Tank designed for under 60w.

Are the OEM 0.5 coils Kanthal? What do you have your wattage set to? A quick Google search looks like they are possibly 316 stainless.

If so you can dial in the TCR and use temp control. Once you set the TCR (92 for 316) I would start with 30 watts / 400F in TCR M1 mode.

The eVic Mini is a solid device, I doubt that is the issue unless your wattage is too high. Not sure what stock coils are rated at (wattage).

I agree a lot with this statement. The crown probably just isn't a good fit for you. There are still plenty of other tanks out there that you would probably really enjoy.

I myself bought a Uwell Rafale recently. Everyone was raving about the crown so I decided I was finally going to get one, and then I see a vlog of grimmgreen's where he does a "first impression" of the Uwell Rafale. He personally hated the Crown, but went on to say that the rafale is a great tank and a steal at 35 bucks. So I assumed well hell, it must be a great tank then. Turns out I personally hate the thing. It's the only tank I own that I NEVER use. The fact that the rebuild able section is wonky as hell majorly contributes to this.
I didn't enjoy the stock coils either though.

Anyways, my point is that I don't think you should give up just yet because of one tank you don't like. Smoking might be simpler, but you must've wanted to quit if you've picked up vaping. Don't sell yourself short man. Keep at it, and I'll bet money you find a set up that you like. And once you find that great setup and a juice that you can't get enough of, I bet you'll love it much more than you ever did analogs.

Sounds like not much has changed in the stock coil game. It's coil roulette. No fun. I learned how to build after my Nautilus coils almost made me slit my eyeballs out with a box cutter.

Yeah, nothing fun about having to buy 25 bucks worth of coils every week, on top of buying juice. Defeats the purpose of saving money. So far I haven't found a stock coil that hasn't given me problems. I have probably spent hundreds just on coils alone.

Try taking a needle and poking holes in the cotton in the four juice holes, and/or leaving the top cap slightly unscrewed. The crown coils have some trouble wicking because the cotton is so tightly packed in there, that's most likely the "warm up period" you're experiencing, the juice actually soaking into the wick after a few hits.

Actually after I re-read your post you're having the opposite problem, which is weird. You can also try following this instructional video for priming the coils . I haven't personally used it but I've seen it recommended a lot. Simply wetting the coils and letting it sit seems to not be sufficient.

I've even had problems with wicking after perforating the cotton as much as I could. Never leaked, thank goodness, but the crown really hates sweet gunky flavors. After two days the cotton gets really dark and can barely soak up any liquid. Until I find a flavor I like that isn't dark and sweet its not much use to me right now.

I have 4 crown tanks and have never gotten a dry hit. Coils need to be primed for much longer than 20 minutes. I put a new coil in before I go to bed and in the morning they're good to go. Slow ramp up starting from 30 watts until I get to my 55 watt comfort zone. Ramp up takes about 20 minutes. Again, 20 MINUTES IS NOT ENOUGH TIME TO PRIME THESE. You need patience with these. The wait is well worth it. I've been using Crowns exclusively for almost a year. Believe me, you'll never get a dry hit if this is done properly. The Crown also likes thicker liquids with the .5 coils. Anything 70 VG and above.

@alex8039 Get yourself a Super Tank, put a Triton Clapton in it, pop it on a single box mod like a IPV D3 or something similar, fantastic flavor, plenty of clouds and only 43w. Grab some 3mg 70/30 juice, no fuss, no drama.

Trust me, I have had most of these tanks, TFV4 with the Quad 90w, Herakles Plus @70w, the Crown @70w, dual box mods, hex ohm boxes, just to name a few, I'd say about 35 sub ohm tanks and 40 box mods, you name it I've more than likely tried it or bought it and that Super Tank with those coils at that lowish wattage beats them all......and way way cheaper. :thumb:

I'll be hated for this but the Crown tank coil floods, not the whole tank but the coil gurgles, it always has, it's very prone to do it, simple as that and when it's not gurgling or spitting, put the tank down and come back to it and it's gurgling again. Never got a dry hit though and those coils do need to be primed and start out at low wattage and build up but ahhhhhh, way to much hassle for me these days.

I guarantee if you follow my advise, you'll be back thanking me, all my friends vape them..

Pop in here and see us if you want to know more, we won't see ya wrong ;)

70PG is pretty thin. PG/VG

I soak my .25Ω Crown coils in a puddle of juice until it's saturated.
I start at 50W for about a ml, then 65W for the rest of the first tank.
Second tank I vape at 70W-75W.
It's good for about 30ml with my 90VG/5%saline juice from there at 70W-80W.
I scrape the gunk with a dental paddle as needed for about another 30ml and poke the juice holes with a map pin as needed.
OTOH, I currently have about 150ml through one with Hingham Hill ~ Christmas Morning.
It's a super clean juice and the producer prides himself on making it that way.

Last September I got over 200ml through a .25Ω with unflavored Max VG and tore it apart to investigate:

.25Ω Crown coil after ~200ml (mostly unflavored or 1/3 flavored Max VG)
It started giving dry hits at 120W
It probably could have lasted another 50+ml but was starting to give a mild nasty note at my usual 80W
Looks pretty damn good for 200+ml high VG IMO
