So anyway, should it really be this hard to just find a device that can heat up some liquid on the go? I'm starting to really miss analogs and their simplicity, on top of that I actually coughed less when smoking them.

I have 2 crown tanks, both tried with regular pre-built coils from the manufacturer and also both with the rebuildable section, even though they are small. You need to prime the coils with fluid. So basically install the coil and then fill the tank and let it sit for 20 minutes to soak up. I've never had dry hits on my crown systems except when you use the RTA on exceptionally high wattage settings where the cotton can't keep up with the chain vaping. Otherwise you should be fine.

Just don't give up on vaping! If necessary spend some more money until you find the right tank. Even if you buy a few 'wrong' tanks after this one. Eventhough the Crown was one of my least popular tanks (and yes i bought several that i didn't like, but others did), it should be able to function properly. The VTC mini is a decent mod, no problems there. I suspect your problem is related to using factory coils combined with high VG liquid, maybe Wattage setting and perhaps low environmental temperature.

RBA
You could try the Replacement RBA Coil Head to start with. The factory coils have a lot of cotton, need a lot of priming and can't handle high-VG liquid well. The RBA however performs much much better.

Lower VG
Also try some lower-VG liquid and see if it helps.

Wattage
When using a .5 Ohm factory coil on the Crown, start off with low Wattage, as low as 15 to 20 W. It takes quite some time to break in the coil. Slowly raise your wattage, step by step.

TC
If you build your (future) RBA with stainless steel or titanium wire, try the tc settings of your VTC mini. This will prevent dryhits.

One of my crown tanks is on the vtc mini. Have used wattage mode, tc mode with the crown tc coils, regular crown coils and also the crown rta heads with no issues.

I've even had problems with wicking after perforating the cotton as much as I could. Never leaked, thank goodness, but the crown really hates sweet gunky flavors. After two days the cotton gets really dark and can barely soak up any liquid. Until I find a flavor I like that isn't dark and sweet its not much use to me right now.
Yea then close tour airholes with your fingers, suck into the mod yo saturate and have juice spill put all over your fresh new mod.

Fun fun.

I Don't have a Crown Tank I am more of a RDA &RTA Person and prefer to build my own coils The Tanks I do own all have RBA'S separate,Zephyrus V2 with 0mg & 0.5 Stock coils.Melo Tank with 0.2 Titanium and 0.5 Kanthal.
Subtank mini which I re-build the coils for the nano and use the RBA Section. My favourite out of the 3 is the Zephyrus,I got mine quite cheap from gearbest during the Flash sales. Its my go to tank for when I'm out and about.I would recommend this Tank and if you want rid of the Crown tank give me a shout....

I've ran 50/50 in subtank nanos, ride to work 6 miles with it jangling round in my jacket pocket, dropped it on floor, never, ever leaked on me once....

Best sub ohm tank for me so far is Aspire Cleito, the wick holes are so large, dry hits are almost impossible even with MAX VG, again never leaked on me once.... flavour is brilliant...
