Ardo -- Imagine a machine that makes mp3 players exactly alike, and they come out of the machine turned on. Even with the default setting of 'shuffle,' if they're exactly alike, they'll play the same songs in the same order, and their batteries will all die on the 27th note of the 243rd song. The only difference between any two of them is that the one that was made first will already have played what the younger one is just getting to.

I posit that's what happens to universes -- they all come into existence exactly alike, so the same things happen in exactly the same way. The difference is that since they're of different ages, "today's date" in each is different.

That's the way I handle time travel in my stories -- the protagonist isn't going back in time, he's going to a parallel universe that's a few hundred years younger than ours. (Hence, no paradoxes, no changing our history, etc.)

The good thing is, there's nothing in any multiverse theory which disproves this!

A little jazz, anyone?

Time travel is an extremely interesting idea. The only reason why I have never dared to think about this much, is that I've always thought one could change anything in the past. The way you explain this, is intriguing, but does the protagonist know that he's gone to another universe younger or older than ours?. Because being aware about it, means something like "Back To The Future" movies.

Although I have to admit that I've read about these kinds of experiences. They are a bit just like you said. You can travel around space and time, but you can't change anything and you don't remember 9/10 of what you saw or experienced. This experience remains somewhere deep inside you. But these experiences come with help of some herbs or rhytmic drums, in sweat tents and so on.

Just stopping by to give a last few 'likes' before shutting off for the night and thought I should answer this . . .

The way my story goes, universes sometimes get skewed. One was very much like us until the mid 20th Century, and it was there that someone developed inter-universe travel. In the few hundred years in which they used travel, they planted receivers in untold thousands of universes scattered throughout tens of thousands of years of history. Then they gave up the technology because it's unethical.

They sent agents out to destroy the receivers in universes after 1800 so they couldn't be reverse-engineered before they rusted away. The guy they sent here felt he was too young to retire, so he went rogue, stole some equipment from home, and used it to convert our Earth's receiver into a transceiver. We caught him selling brand-new-but-perfectly-authentic Mona Lisas he'd stolen from other universes.

So we don't have the technology, or even a good working theory, to find other universes or travel to them, but we have access to the receivers they left behind.

An agency was set up to determine the where/when of the usable receivers (there's no master list), and use those which are in convenient places/times to study history. A sideline is disposal of hazardous waste in universes so skewed that life never developed on Earth.

My protagonist's legitimate job is observing Medieval Northern Europe. His illicit sideline is finding uncataloged receivers and using them to steal historical relics when they were brand new.

And, as usual in these cases, it takes a lot more space to explain that than it takes in the story!
