Actually, Redd, that vid is mislabeled. it's not Miles at all, but Chet Baker.

I knew it wasn't Miles after about 10 seconds--just not his sound. Beautiful, but not Miles. An actually, I'm sort of relieved. The idea of Miles doing "Smoke" sort of had me prepared for something rather different, especially considering the photo at the beginning of that vid is from Miles' later career, when he was in his h.e.r.o.i.n junkie, "I Hate Whitey" phase, and was playing really weird, angry stuff...

Not your fault, and not trying to be obnoxious--it could happen to anyone. That's the problem with YouTube--a lot of people post stuff and they mislabel it because they have no idea what it really is...

When I was in high school, I played lead alto sax in jazz band my junior and senior years. We played this song one year for the State Finals, and I got to duet with the lead trumpet. IT was one of the most difficult--and enjoyable--songs I've ever played. It's written in a really weird time signature, and changes up a lot. Essentially you can't count in one time for more than about 8 bars at any given point in the song...

Miles Davis and John Coltrane

Recorded by the Charlie Parker Septet 28th March 1946, Hollywood CA. (Before either Miles or Bird got hooked on the "junk" an were still making great jazz...)

"Night in Tunesia"
