Wow... that would be a lot like... the 1950s? I dunno, I wasn't around till '61, but it seems to me that people were still very polite to each other then; ladies wore pearls and little white gloves and men wore hats, and everyone said "mind if I smoke?" before they lit up, and no one did, because 95% of everyone smoked, but if someone did voice an objection, then the cigarette would be put away for later, or the inquirer would simply go elsewhere to smoke it.

It had to be the hippies. Or maybe it was Nixon. I dunno really; I was a child throughout all the 60's, but that's when everything changed.

I have to respectfully disagree. By voluntarily treating yourself as a "smoker" you are reinforcing the idea that vaping and smoking are the same thing, which they most definitely are not.

I believe we can push the boundaries while being courteous to others.

I love Andria's "what they don't know won't hurt 'em" mentality - I fully agree! I vape in every bathroom I enter LOL! I figure if they can spray those noxious fumes they mistakenly call "air freshener" in there, who's going to notice (or be harmed by) the subtle pleasant fragrance of my vape?

Yeah but sneaking into a bathroom like a "smoker" are you not treating it like smoking?

I would have to agree with smokinGavin here. "Just don't vape where you can't smoke. It shouldn't be hard. We were able to abide by those rules when we were smokers why should vaping be any different. Don't give the authorities a reason to regulate us."

I mean I used to smoke 2+ packs a day and still managed to go into a store or other public areas for at least a manageable long period of time not necessarily needing a smoke. If we respect the fact that it does in a lot of ways look similar to smoking and treat a respect non-smokers as if we were "smoking" then maybe some would have a better opinion of the whole positive side of vaping. We can't forget that there are a lot of people still unaware of what it is and are constantly being barraged with false anti-vaping commercials backed by big tobacco and do not really know the positive benefits we have all experienced. Educated the public...don't be pushy, blatantly intrusive and disrespectful.

All this is precisely why "what they don't see or know about won't hurt them." I don't sneak anywhere, but if I'm in a public restroom, I can vape in privacy. If I'm visiting my mom in the hospital, I vape in the bathroom of her pvt room because a) she doesn't mind, and b) it's closer than the parking lot, and c) nurses are some of the worst ANTZ on the planet.

I vaped in the ER because they left me laying there for 9 hrs, I needed it, and I could -- they very kindly closed the door so they could forget about me better. Vaping doesn't leave a lingering scent in the air, so they never knew -- and it never hurt them.

It's completely asinine and stupid to treat vaping just like smoking, and fortunately, in many places, we don't have to stand for it.

Im thinking somewhere in between. Vapers being mindful of others and not clouding up public areas and others not throwing a conniption if a guy takes a quick vape some place public.

I never snuck a cig in the bathroom in my 3+ decades of smoking, so no I'm not treating it like smoking. But it does prove the point that smoking and vaping are radically different -- everyone would notice if a smoker lit up in the bathroom, nobody notices if I vape in there.

And I don't want to be disrespectful to anyone - I just don't want my activities to be curtailed or taxed to death based on ignorance, fear and lies.

We can push the boundaries AND be courteous at the same time. I would never vape on a crowded city bus or in an elevator, or blow clouds in someone's face. But it's kinda silly to not let me vape at an outdoors event or in a bar, yet that's where we're headed if we keep letting them equate vaping with smoking.

My mother has always told me I didn't have to go outside to smoke, but I always did anyway out of respect for her and her home. But when she says it's ok to vape, I vape (and she says she likes the way it smells)!!

We live in a very 'delicate' society, where some even call for personal injury or property damage when a business owner would make the choice not to cater certain events... Vaping will never be disassociated from smoking or widely accepted in public spaces. It is a shame to have seen this transformation in my lifetime. I won't miss this place one bit when I depart...

You know its asinine and stupid...and I know its asinine and stupid to treat vaping just like smoking, but most do treat it like smoking...especially non-smokers so we should try to carry ourselves as if we were. We wouldn't wear sweaty gym clothes to a wedding? We could... but would we?

Ditto that last paragraph (ditto all of it actually!!!); when she finally quit for good, I stopped smoking in her house, even though she told me I didn't have to -- I figured if she wasn't going to make a smoke stench, no reason why I should either, and quitting was very hard for her; I didn't want to make it any harder. And over the last year that I've been vaping, I've noticed that now when we're leaving, she gives me a hug AND a kiss -- she used to avert her face from my smoker's breath (never considering how she inflicted the same on me when I was a child!).

Kaahn, your msg doesn't make the least bit of sense, so I am unable to formulate any reply.

RE: "I don't vape anywhere it wouldn't be appropriate to pull a lit cig out your pocket, take a drag, and drop it back in your pocket "
For some reason, I think if i was to walk in a room with my pants on fire from putting a lit smoke in my pocket, smokers, vapers and non smokers would all say something

While I tried to sneak a joke in, my point is that things are possible with vaping that isn't really possible with lit cigs. For example, some places that are outside or open-air restrict smoking because often it is crowded. I think a reasonable guideline for vaping in such areas is no one within 50 feet. But that presupposes that you can and will stop doing it whenever someone approaches.

I agree with AndriaD that no one noticing is a very reasonable test of if anyone is bothered. It's not perfect because occasionally one might slip up, but then someone detecting you vaping isn't a serious crime. Certainly no worse than establishments restricting vaping to little spots where the smoke is thick and the ashtrays never stop burning.

Too bad manners, common courtesy and common sense are in such rare supply...

    Even on the Forum :grr:

Please remember most people that find ECF have just discovered this amazing thing called vaping. They had no clue about all the legislation that we have been fighting for years. They have also not seen the many threads that have discussed open vaping and stealth vaping.

    Manners people, manners.

Another reason to push the envelope and not treat ourselves as smokers... it gives us opportunities to educate.

I know a good number of non-smokers who approve of vaping. But I have read horror stories about vapers being told things like "that's worse than smoking".

If I am vaping in an area where smoking is prohibited (let's say an outdoor park with "no smoking" signs for the sake of argument) and I am approached by someone saying "hey you can't smoke here" -- here's an opportunity to educate someone and let them know there's no smoke! There's no carcinogens! What you're seeing is the same thing that is produced by fog machines, with a little food flavoring added in. And it has been proven to be virtually no different than the air you're already breathing.

If you don't understand what I was trying to say then I can't help you with that. Simply put don't vape where you can't smoke. Dont wear sweaty gym clothes to a wedding it just wouldnt be proper. Respect and we shall be respected. Vaping where smoking isn't allowed...even the sneaking here and there is only furthering big tobacco and pharma's cause.

my creed is i am a vaper so i vape.
    on the bus,check.
    at any store,check.
at the bars, check.(its still allowed here.)
    at home,double check.
    any where out doors,triple check.
    complaints,zero.
the dirty little secret is vaping is not the problem every one
cracks it up to be. of coarse a little stealth and common sense
goes a long way. here in Saint Paul i am not aware of any
problems arising from vaping in public places.people when left
to their own devices work things out on their own.
in the bars, coffee shops and restaurants where it is allowed
the caveat is don't smog the place up and be respectful of
other customers. you will be asked to leave if you don't.
    problem solved.
the only regulation that makes any sense is to require all
employers to make a policy concerning vaping and post it
where everyone can see. that's it.
its not about us or them, its all of us together. that's why
there are no smoking signs every where. they are required
by law. not to prevent smoking where its not allowed. we
already know that. their there to reinforce governments
control over our will as a people.that's why non-smokers
universally shun smokers. smoking is not allowed. smoking
is not allowed.can't ya read no smoking!.
remember when the first bans started to be implemented
they were in bars and restaurants and venues where people
would likely meet to socialize. places where society meets
and socializes is where most public opinion is fermented and
formed. blanket bans came about more out of a fear that
the targeted bans could be deemed unconstitutional.
second hand smoke and the children were good talking
points but not necessarily the real reasons behind the bans.
finding a way to control public opinion or at least steer and
minimize it is what its all about.those of us that have lived
through the fifties to now can see a marked difference in
the power wielded by government and the peoples willingness
to allow it. i wonder what our founding fathers whom gathered
at the local pub smoking and drinking to ferment the revolution
    would think.
    end of rant,but remember.
no smoking allowed,no smoking allowed,no smoking allowed.

How many of you wear Vaping related t-shirts with powerless, pointless or self serving waffle printed on them? Good manners is a given but the opponents of Vaping are downright dirty in their tactics and propaganda and have resources at their disposal to pursue their agendas. We don't have to be offensive, we do need to go on the offensive!

I suggest a good start in creating awareness might be thought/question provoking and cleverly worded t-shirts like back in the day with the :):). I loved that "Imagine a world" ANTZ commercial where instead of smoking, folks were blowing bubbles everywhere-right.

Surely we have some super brain, strategists ex-hippy ex-smokers in our community who can turn the anti-vapes propaganda to our advantage and create public awareness in favour of more smokers quitting.

Is it really just about the big $$.? If so, they will end getting it and mainstream politics point of view will align with a more positive direction towards harm reduction.
