Sorry this is so long -
I've posted several times in various discussions about my problems with weight gain and drastic loss of energy since quitting smoking and vaping only for the last 3 years. I've not changed my diet, my meds, my sleep habits, nor anything else that could've caused it!
I do have hyperthyroidism (take Synthroid for the last 18+ years) and had seen an endo. (he's also my PCP) every 4 months. Metabolism was regulated and weight and energy were always great. Have discussed with him at every visit in the last 3 years...about my ongoing weight gain and further loss of energy since quitting the smokes. I'd maintained nearly my same weight since I was in high school more than 45 years ago! It never wavered more than 3 lbs. up or down. Had always had enough energy for me and several others, too.

Doctor said my smoking delivered not only the nicotine my body craved, but also all those other chemicals that rode along with it into my body. Not getting those chemicals now, and less nic while vaping 6mg eliquid (compared to smoking 1-1 1/2 PAD)...had messed up my metabolism that was regulated for many many years! He still gives me a thumbs up on vaping instead of smoking, and has also given me an additional RX to hopefully help me. It didn't though. In fact, it caused other problems, so I quit taking it.

So, I've been doing something on my own to see if it might change things back to MY normal. Since another ECF member posted (I think it was in August)...about his own weight gain when quitting smoking, I'd been thinking about what he's been doing since then to lose it. The last time he posted about it, I think he said he'd lost all but about 5 pounds of the 18 he'd gained. He was going to continue what he was doing to get rid of them, too.

So, I've also been gradually upping my nic mg in my DIY, too. I'm increasing it from my usual 6mg to 1/2 mg higher each month. I've only been doing it for 2 months now, so only a 1mg increase. I've lost 5 pounds I'd gained and have a noticeably increased energy level, too. It's not up to where it was yet, and I've got more pounds to go. So March 1st...I'll raise it another 1/2mg and see how it goes. By the way, my doctor does know I'm doing this, and has no problem with me trying it.

So, based on my doctor's training, experience, qualifications, etc., his conclusion is that even if your eating habits don't change, you don't substitute snacking for smoking, etc...you will likely gain weight when you quit smoking, because your metabolism IS changed! That might be helpful info. for others, too, if they're having some of the same problems since quitting.

Hi, to anyone I just want to post a theory I have. I started vaping again about a month ago and my weight has shot up 10 lbs. I suspect it is because the flavoring chemicals in the ecigs cause my body to release insulin which in turn drops my blood sugar which in turn makes me ravenous, especially for carbs and junk food. These cravings are surprising because I've been Low Carb High Fat Keto for over a year now, and doing great, but this vaping has killed me. Thankfully I intermittent fast as well which is very helpful, but I've been eating all kinds of carbs and I can't talk myself out of it when the urge comes. They use flavorings that when eaten I'm sure cause an insulin response so I believe it happens from inhalation as well. As such I've stopped vaping a few days ago, and the cravings are waning. I am determined to not smoke cigarettes anymore. I hope I can make this work. I just wanted to alert anyone experiencing similar symptoms of hunger and weight gain seemingly brought on by vaping that it may be the insulin. Insulin is a driver of weight gain and heart disease. Good luck to us all to stay away from cigarettes first and foremost. Further luck with the rest. Be well yall.

Grunch = I haven't read all the replies.

There are numerous threads about if vaping affects your insulin and common consensus is that it does not.

It sounds to me like you might need a higher level of nicotine and to track your calories in/out. I lost weight while vaping by using myfitnesspal to track my calories in and a fitbit to track my calories out (they sync with each other so I can see my net calories per day on MFP). I am down to my goal weight now and still track my food by the gram when I eat at home, and as best I can when not at home with my food scale.

Others may have said this already but I'll say it again, with my own anecdotal evidence.

Going from smoking to vaping I was able to begin losing weight, not gaining.

Why?

With vaping instead of smoking, my breathing and oxygen levels greatly improved, my pain levels decreased, and I was able to do my physical therapy with greater ease, and the more physical therapy I was able to do, the more I was able to do over time.

Nicotine is an appetite suppressant, and keeps any weird hunger pains in check, and I eat just as normally as I did while smoking..

So, I was able to lose weight with vaping instead of smoking, rather than what the majority of people do, and that is gain weight due to quitting smoking.

Check that with when I quit vaping.. I was hungry all the time, I had to drink water, lots of water, to both try and keep the hunger pains in check, and the hand to mouth thing satisfied at least in the beginning phase.

But I still gained some weight, because the appetite suppressant was no longer in existence as I was no longer partaking of any nicotine, something my body had, had for 32 years of my life as a smoker.

Back to vaping again, no longer hungry other than normal hunger pains at regular meal times.

I vape exclusively sweet stuff.. be cause I love sweets, I vape cinnamon roll and banana bread and Apple pie and more, every day. It's what got me away from the smokes, having lovely flavors that are enjoyable instead of nasty tobacco..

To each his own, but I think it's a real stretch of the imagination to blame gaining weight on vaping..

most people gain 50 pounds or more from quitting smoking because of the deprivation of nicotine, something the body has to learn how to live without which acts as an appetite suppressant in the body.. the majority of all people who quit smoking through vaping, never so much as gained a pound.

I'm one of them.

Go put the app Strava on your phone and go out and ride or run some. That's how I keep weight down. Can eat all I want when I burnt 3000 calories running around on the bike. 3500 calories is a pound, doesn't matter if it's a Keto diet or Jenny Craig. Eat less than you are burning.

All you diet people and vegans.. wow.. that is so weird.

I eat anything and everything I want. I eat biscuits and gravy, country sausage, French Toast, bacon, steak, hamburgers, homemade bread, tons of different casseroles and soups and stews, Italian food laden with pasta too..salads laden with dressing.. desserts include the occasional cheesecake, chocolate cake, coconut cream pie.. and more

I don't count calories, I don't use pretend butter, pretend milk, pretend sugar or pretend bread, and I have never so much as tasted pretend meat. (Seriously, none of that stuff is good for anyone!)

I am healthy because I don't eat more than I burn in calories. I do exercise.

Have fun with your weird diets.. lol.. glad it's not me having to do all that!

Since before I've been vaping "seriously", I've been fairly stable at about 20 pounds over what I'd like to be.

I've tried everything, nothing works, it just makes me sick. Then again, I've had several health issues, including cancer that have wrecked me above and beyond the normal.

BUT, my wife, who was the smoker, and the main vaping person, and who has as many health issues if not more, has been able to lose about a hundred pounds that she gained at one point due to her system being out of wack.

She did it with several technique, one being following a program (Trim Healthy Mama) that does have a strong no-gluten approach but isn't a 100% no-gluten thing either (and she actually is one of the real people that has gluten issues and not the fad thing), where the concern is the processed food and such, where fats aren't the enemy, etc.

I will say that she had driven me crazy with it, but it did give her actual results.

Personally, I do go with the belief of calory in / calory out, but many need to follow such a program to motivate them to put the fork down, behave with portion sizes.

But, for myself, I have no more thyroid, and my system is no longer normal for it (lots of bad side effects), so I already feel like I'm dying a little bit more every day, so meh, I just do what I can and eat as sensibly as possible.

So all this to say that vaping wasn't a factor at all for us, and I believe that the oral fixation is more to blame for many when they quit smoking, aside the body's reaction to lacking all those wonderful toxins.

It's really simple, poop more than you eat. I was gaining weight, and I stopped it. Age happens also, metabolism slows down.

Edit: Those that are disabled and can't exercise are excluded from this. I'm speaking mainly of normal folks.
if you poop more than you eat, something is wrong... see a doctor fast!

For me it is quite the opposite. I vape dessert flavors because it helps me no longer crave the sugary foods. I will vape a fruity COPYRIGHTDMCA and not need to eat fruity COPYRIGHTDMCA for breakfast. Instead I'll have coffee and a vape in the morning. I would vape a dessert flavor in lieu of eating actual dessert. I lost 30 lbs in the last 6 months.. and it is because of a drastic reduction in sugar and carb intake. And I do feel vaping has helped me in that area.

I broke my back quite a few years ago. I am 5 foot 8 inches, and at the time, prior to my back, I weighed 135. (Generally fluctuated between 130 - 135)

Once I broke my back, my exercise absolutely stopped. Went from needing around 4,000 calories a day just to keep from losing weight, to burning few if any calories.

I was smoking at that time, and gained weight, but body evened out at 165, which, for my height is a little heavier than it should be, but it's not much considered overweight because of the weight range for my height..

And while I would like to loose these extra pounds, and I often see fat in the mirror since I'm no longer that sexy thing I once was.. lol.. but I don't suppose I mind it much.

I'm certainly not willing to do diets to loose it, I'm just a little more grandmotherly than I once was.. according to my husband I simply went from a milf to a gilf.. and that's fine, since I'm a grandma to 4 children..

:)

As we age we change, get sick, get injured, have lots of problems that often have nothing to do with vaping..

I wanted to post an update of my little experiment with raising my nic level to hopefully rid of the weight I'd gained when I quit smoking and went entirely to vaping.

When I last posted above on February 25th...I'd been able to lose 5 of the pounds I'd gained, by just upping my nic 1/2mg a month for 2 months. So I'd gone from my usual 6mg to 7mg. I'd planned to up it another 1/2mg on March 1st, but decided since I'd lost the 5lbs by going to 7mg...I'd stay at that level for another 2 months to see if I'd lose more there. By May 1st, I'd lost another 4 pounds. Again, I had not changed what I ate, how much I ate, my level of activity, etc. My energy level is now also nearly 100% back to where it was for many years!

So, being at 7mg (just a 1mg increase from the 6mg I was at for 3+ years)...is for me, gradually making a difference in my weight and metabolism. I'll see if a few more pounds continue to come off over the next month or so, and if not...may raise it 1/2 mg more at the most. I think I'm getting very close to what is optimal, for me!

I've been craving a smoke, and every time I have a cigarette craving, I find myself staring in the fridge or pantry wishing I had bought some better junk food. It doesn't matter what's in the fridge, it's just my brain missing it's cig fix. I have to up my nic some for at least a couple hours a day. Midday is the worst. Luckily, I haven't actually gained weight because I'm a terrible grocery shopper.

Right after I switched to vaping, I got the cravings. I quickly discovered that high nic, junk food flavored juice halted cravings without adding calories to my diet.

I know, popcorn juice sounds a bit odd, but that is my go to for a snack attack - it tastes like popcorn, keeps my hands and mouth busy for a bit and, the nic does calm my appetite.

Could be we're all just stting around vaping while watching YouTube video reviews of vape gear.:D

I think that's right on. I sit around in the morning for a couple of hours catching up on ECF posts when I should be outside doing something constructive and burning calories. Retirement can be a weight gainer if you don't stay active.

That said, I lost 13 pounds a couple of years ago and have maintained the loss by weighing every morning and watching what I eat. I lost it by pushing away from the table when my brain told me I was satisfied. Ignoring that little piece of info can lead to weight gain. My doctor's scales and records show that I have maintained the loss.

Psst, his scales are obviously off. I weigh more on his fancy scales than I do at home. :) It's obviously the difference between dressed and not dressed, though. I like the weight I get when I first get out of bed in the AM.

Yeah, I only weigh myself after a haircut and a shave. Why throw my weight off because I didn't shave that morning? You can never be too accurate.:D

Jogging accelerates the digestive system. If you can't jog, take fiber supplements. I like the clear Wheat Dextrin type. It disappears into the water when you stir it and what you drink is clear enough to look like plain water after a stir. It beats the heck out of Metamucil and all others I've tried. It's a great product.

Since I quit smoking (by vaping) about 6 years ago, I've resumed my every other day workouts. I do about 140 reps with a curl bar and a couple of sets on the Total Gym and then ride 6 miles on a stationary bike while watching Netflix. It's an enjoyable break in my daily routine.
