Out of curiosity I decided to go through my bank statements and see just how much I have spent on everything vape related. I came up with this list, which includes everything for my girlfriend and I since 12/5/2011-

Blu: 151.88 starter kit, disposables, cart refill
MadVapes: 349.58 liquid, carts, attys, tanks, driptips etc
PinkSpot: 230.40 liquid, t-shirt :)
AltSmoke: 259.71 liquid, attys, 2 silver bullets, 2 batteries, charger, tank etc
TOTAL: $991.57

We were both fairly light smokers at roughly 3/4 pack/person/day. If we smoked since 12/5/2011 we would have spent the following in those 131 days-

Marlboro Menthol: 5.57/pack
TOTAL: $1,094.51

Cheap-o carton: 47.33
TOTAL: $885.75

Worst case scenario I have spent $105.82 extra vaping. Considering I have 10 carts, ~130ml liquid, 5 attys on hand, I'm probably closer to breaking even or even passed into savings if we vape some of these off flavors. Assuming I did buy only packs of cigarettes I saved $102.97. Who knows how much I have saved with quality of life and medical bills down the road. Not to mention passing this on to friends and family, can't put a price on that. Soon my costs will be even less as time averages things out, and possibly taking up some DIY.

I had tried gum (itchy throat), patch (again with the itching), lozenges (mm chalk); in the end vaping has been the only thing that has helped me quit smoking, and I believe for the long run. Yeah I may slip up around smokers on occasion and have only 1, but as time goes on they are becoming less and less of an object to me, and instead I crave my bullet. Yeah my girlfriend may have hated me when I refused to buy smokes, and instead pushed the issue of vaping until she submitted. In the end it has been worth it. Any smoker should be able to see that even financially, in 4 short months, vaping is at least worth a try.

Vaping all in all has been a very positive experience once I climbed the learning curve. I didn't realize it had such a following and sense of community. Even the vendors are beyond helpful, which I'm still getting used to :) It's becoming more of a hobby now, which I don't mind, playing around with new gear is fun!

Well that's our story, mathematically speaking. I hope all of you have had as good of an experience with vaping as we have and I invite everyone to share yours. If you don't have a story yet, I encourage you to create one.

Happy Vaping :) ,
-Adam

I'm probably very close to even at this point, but I made a lot of really bad investments in the beginning. On the bright side, I have 1 1/2 years worth of Boge cartos on hand, 3+ years of nic in the freezer and at least 2 mods I'm positive will be with me till the day I die. So, I figure in two years I'll be $8,0000 bucks ahead. :)

My expensive learning curve is over... eGo-T > Lavatube > Provari I have a bunch of juice and 50 boge cartos, 2 tanks, multiple drip tips (including a Trippy Tip on the way).

And my signature is updated and accurate. If I remember right, I've saved a little so far, but I'm stocked for awhile and it will only go up from here!

Just for fun, I've been keeping careful records during my 51-day vaping adventure. So far:

  • Total vaping expense: $748
  • Money saved on cigs: $302
  • Net cost of vaping: $446
That's $8.74 more PER DAY than I would have spent on smoking stink sticks.

But I can afford it. To me, the key number is:

  • Cigarettes not smoked: 918
I spent a lot of money just learning the ropes, and my recent Provari purchase was an investment that will last a long time. I like to think of the wasted money as education expenses. Everyone has to go through the initial stages. But I've got it figured out now. In the long run, I think I'll be spending a bit less on vaping than I was spending cancer sticks.

Congrats to you and your girlfriend and thanks for this well written article - it is a great read and you make some great points and justifications!

Here in NY analogs are 10-11 bucks a pack so from that perspective you are way ahead of the game!

Either way you can't put a price on the health and lifestyle benefits gained from transitioning from analogs to vaping - that's how I look at it.

I know that my vaping costs have far outweighed (by a landslide) what my analog costs would have been but the tradeoff is priceless!

Like you I tried everything imaginable to kick the habit - patches, hypnosis, ect... and the results always ended up the same - up in smoke.

I even had a few prior attempts with some sub-par ecig products that didn't pan out due to constantly failing batteries and cartos.

Third time was a charm for me. I educated myself by doing thorough research (mainly through this forum) and went all in to obtain the right hardware, juices, and nicotine content required to make it happen. The results were stellar. I am way past analogs at this point and have no desire nor reason to ever return - only a million reasons not to.

Vaping for me has become not just a saving grace but also a great hobby and obsession!

Vape On!

Holy #@!^, yeah, I think 10-11/pack would make me just quit cold turkey if I never found vaping, but I didn't want to quit nicotine, just burning paper, especially after the FSC nastiness. Like you I just kept pushing until I found what worked, I just knew not everyone was using autos (no offense to those who use 'em) not for me. Yay for mods *hugs glorified flashlight* And yes, we all fall victim to vapeporn :)

@Taos
Congrats on finding what worked for you, glad you're over the hill and its all smooth sailing from here on out!

@dlsw
lmfao

Thanks peeps for all the responses! Always curious what people have been through, and how they feel about it all as a whole.

I should probably start looking at it as an education expense too. Would make me look at my half full bottles in a different light. :)

I was lucky and found an everyday juice quickly so I haven't spent a lot of money on juices.

Initial expense: About $120. This gave me the E-Power 14650 starter kit, two more E-Powers inexpensively from parts as back-ups, a few boxes of cartos and four additional batteries and chargers.

Monthly vaping expense: About $40 per month for juice and cartos.

Smoking expense: About $252 per month for the 1.5 pack a day cigarette habit. Cartons cost me $42-$46 in CA.

151.88 for that Blu? Good god with that you can buy a mod that performs a hell of a lot better.

That was just meaning the company. That total includes the starter kit, disposables that I first tried, and like 1 or 2 packs of extra carts. And yes, anything will perform better haha... But it did get me started, so I like it for the 1 and only reason.

A FB friend saw I was quitting with e-cigs and wanted to try them. I gave her a link directly to an eG0-C kit for the $79. For some reason she ignored that and got a Blu kit for around the same price.
Even worse she lives about 15-20 minutes from Cignot so not only would she have got more enjoyment for the same price she could've had Cignot show her how to use them.

I am afraid to figure it all out lol but for me the reality was die or quit and no matter what I tried I just could not quit. My father passed away from lung cancer in 2010 and even watching him pass was not enough of a kick in the backside to get me to quit. Vaping has been the only thing to ever work in my 20+ years of smoking. I can not put a price tag on my life and I know that in time I will stop my shopping sprees (maybe:D)

Nineteen months into vaping I've never met an e-cig or an APV that didnt work if i needed it to, just some that I've become much closer friends with then others ;) I've now got my stash of favorite APV's and cartos and attys to keep me happy :) I admit, I'm a Drip Tip addict and Drip Tips are now my only splurge :D There's a few vendor juices I'd hate to live without, but I DIY the majority of my juice now-a-days. Unlike in the beginning, I can vape the same juice all day if I wish, but I like variety so I usually change juices several times during the day just like often changing APV's during the day, not because I have to, but because I prefer too.

Up until recently I'd not saved a penny over what I would have spent on smoking but now I get to enjoy my savings elseware in my life. I may live in NY but I purchased my smokes at the local Rez so my cost of smoking 2 pad was much lower than many living in NY. From now on trying something new will be for fun only once in a while, not becuase I have a need to find anything new. I suspect that I'll still find myself spending about $50 a month on vaping, but if I needed to I could go many months without spending a penny. :vapor:

I have to keep track of my expenses. SWMBO insists that I not spend more than I would on smokes. I just ordered a VV box mod, extra batteries and a few other misc items last night. I keep a complete list of all my purchases on my blog entry. My sig keeps track of what I don't spend on cigs for me to compare to. I'm about 2 cartons (20 days) away from hitting break even again. :D

I DO have about 450ml of juice on hand & a pile of clearos, so if I don't buy anything else I'm still good for the next 5-6 months. But, I'd have to vape up the juices I didn't like very much to make it.

My story is eerily similar, sema.... but I'm with dslw,, no way am I gonna add it all up.. but if I had to guess, I'd say I was extremely close to you. I spent a little over a hundred tonight, as a matter of fact. I think I can calm it down now though.. (yeah right. As soon as I get an email about another sale, I'll be right back on some order form again!)

Good story and gratz to you!!
