I live in a town that is quickly turning into a retirement community(no offense meant to any of you retiree vapers). I find that I have gotten odd stares and mean mugs from many who simply don't know what I am doing. Being it is only my second week, I am still weary of informing people of what I am doing, I don't want to give somebody bad info.

I try to be discreet and mindful of others so far. Haven't vaped in a public building or anything yet. I did sneak a few puffs in the walmart bathroom the other day. My car is where I do most of my vaping while out and about, and even then the guy or gal in the car next to me looks at me with a suspicious gaze.

I fear they all think I am doing illicit drugs.

I had one old guy in a pickup truck whose eyes were about bugging out of his head when he was watching me use my Provari. He was pulled up next to me at a red light, and his window was down. So I rolled down the window and yelled, "it's an electronic cigarett3, nothing illegal!" He yelled back, "oh, I was wondering about that". The he asked me if they worked and I said yes. Then the light turned green.

Had a guy do the same thing to me yesterday, made me laugh.

Hah! I had that first day out, heard someone behind me whisper (loudly) something about my . All of the lols.

Still feel a bit conspicuous, but now that I've had the chance to group up with the other newbies in work, and have found most of the stares were a preamble to interested questions ("so do you not miss fags?" "don't they taste bad?" etc. that even a newbie like me can answer), and it gets easier. Hell, I'm eagerly awaiting my chance to order some bling from Alice in Vapeland to make my kit *more* attention I grabbing. Think it's just down to getting comfortable with it.

I'm still a bit self conscious with mine. I live in a small town and I've literally not seen anyone using one, with the exception of the workers at the e-cig kiosk in our mall. Hell, even in DC where I work I've only seen it once. When I was in NYC I saw it quite a few times (not much that I didn't see up there!).

I honestly never thought that anyone would mistake it for any kind of drug use but that's something to keep in mind when out in public. Is there any validity to that? [EDITED]

Preface: Keep in mind, I use a cigarette lookalike, which does not produce a large plume of vapor, so it's a bit easier to be discreet...

I have vaped in a restaurant (yes, singular; I don't eat out much) - My son and I were there for lunch, no other diners near us, and the waitress just smiled and asked if we would like refills on our drinks.

...at the mall - not in the stores, just in the open food court and along the pathways. And in fact, there's this guy who works at one of those carts in the center of the mall, that sells cell phone accessories... he has a pretty sophisticated system and I see him vaping all the time.

...at the movie theater - not during the movie, but before and after. I was vaping while ordering popcorn once and the gal behind the counter just seemed fascinated.

...at the hospital - I took my son to the emergency room a week ago... I asked the triage nurse if I could use an electronic cigarette in the waiting room. His response: "I don't think so?" - question mark, LOL! - I went outside instead, at the benches right under the no smoking sign. Police passed by, EMTs, security guards, nurses, doctors, hospital employees, patients, visitors, etc... a few people stopped to look for a second, but no glaring and no hassles.

...at a different hospital a few days later - The Kaiser hospital has 'no smoking on campus' signs EVERYWHERE. I went out to a shady spot under a tree and vaped off and on for about an hour. I was approached by someone - not security but an employee - and at first I thought for sure she was going to ask me to stop, to inform me of the no smoking rules... She didn't. She was just concerned because I had been out there for an hour; she asked if I was waiting for a ride, I told her that I was just waiting for my turn to see my grandbaby in the NICU. She congratulated me on my new grandbaby and went on her way.

...at the grocery store - I'm very discreet, though. Like another poster suggested, I just hold it a bit longer and then exhale through my nose, and only when I'm alone in the aisle.

...I do not vape on the bus, or when on my son's JR high school campus. It's not tobacco or smoke, but I don't want kids to see it and think, "Hey, cool! I want to do that!"

I generally follow the smoking rule. If smoking is not allowed, I will ask & vape if it is OK. I do vape at work in my bay. I work in an Army vehicle maintenance facility & leave my Vamo & KTS on my computer stand where I can grab them when I want a vape. I get no flack from co-workers or supervisors. Have had a few co-workers ask about it & have explained vaping & even had one convert. I just don't flaunt it. No walking the shop floor vaping. I vape in my truck while driving. Have had cops pass me & not give me a second look despite the long hair & beard. I didn't smoke in the house. Especially since I was a closet smoker. Now I can vape in the house with no worries. All in all I just use common sense on where & when I vape. If we all did this, then the non-smokers might become more understanding of our vaping lifestyle.

VAPE ON !!!! :vapor:

I generally will only vape in public if it is ok to do so.. I have never had anyone give me any looks or anything while in the car. There is a lot of B&M shops in my town so I am assuming that most people(more than half) know what I am doing when I'm vaping. I have been asked once to not vape in a movie theatre, I just kind of did it out of habit more than anything and the waiter(its a dinner movie theatre) came over and asked me to stop but then told me he thought it was a stupid rule and that he is also a vaper. So all in all just be respectful.

So weird, I still feel the same way about Vaping that I do about smoking cigarettes. It still embarrassment for me. At work I hide in my car, and at home I go to an empty room. I just don't like being seen doing it, and when people see me I feel they are always looking down at me. Any thoughts

I usually use a mini or a small ego or my reo mini (which is really small) when out. Not because I care all that much what people think because I don't feel like getting into a discussion about it.

The few times I've been approached have all been positive. Either it's someone that wants to quit or they have a mom or dad or husband that wants to quit and they ask questions. Think of it this way, every explanation you give could be help saving someone's life.

If people give you the side eye, ignore them. If they're really interested, CASAA has printable material you can hand out. People love that!

I vape all the time. I'm a grad student. I often work in a lab (no clean room) and I vape in the office and in the lab as well as in meetings on occasion. I do try to vape discreetly (exhale slowly or blow the vapor where it will disappear) and do not draw attention to it but I haven't received any flack from anyone. I think the lab manager knows I vape, though I've not had any direct conversations about it. My research adviser knows I vape and has no qualms about it (that he as told me). The university policy is that you have to be a certain distance from the doors of any building to smoke. I disregard all smoking ordinance with a bit of humble tact and have not run into any problem.
I work in the Chemistry Department at a state University. I am the Lab Manager for my lab. I vape at my desk. I work with Scientists, they understand what vapor is. Keep vaping, bro.

I kind of have the mentality that I will vape wherever I feel like (of course without trying to offend or step on anyone's toes). IF someone objects (hasn't happened) or asks me what I'm doing (happened a few times) I will respectfully explain what an e-cig is and what's in it and that the vapor isn't harmful (usually point out that there's almost no smell) and I will tell them how easy it was to quit smoking with it.

I have been stopped in Walmart for vaping and ended up talking to the lady for like 20 mins explaining all this (probably the longest explanation I've given) and I think she left thinking it was the greatest product in the world and she would recommend it to someone she knew who smoked.

I think the biggest factor is not to be a douchbag about it, don't act like you're not allowed to do what you're doing or feel guilty about it and be respectful of other people when they do take offence.

I handle vaping the same way I did smoking: I don't vape inside public buildings, I do it inside someone's home after asking. At a bus stop, I stand well away from shelters/people. I don't vape around children.

Vaping isn't a mainstream activity in my city -- Except for a brick & mortar vape-gear store, I've never seen anyone else doing it. There's just too much room for misunderstanding or confrontation when nobody knows what I'm doing.
But mostly, the way I figure, if I'm the first vaper someone ever sees/meets in their life, I want their first impression to be remembered as "this guy went out of his way to be considerate".

I think there are some places that are not appropriate to vape, simply out of consideration of those around me. If it is a place where folks I don't know are "stuck" in the area around me, like a bus, train, plane, church, theater, a line at the store (or any line for that matter), I feel it would be inconsiderate to vape there. However in my truck, on the sidewalk, in the park, at home, or anywhere someone else is smoking, I am more than happy to vape, and usually do.

I also try to limit my vaping around children, that is a matter of keeping adult only things for adults only (I don't drink alcohol in front of kids either) but that is my thing and I don't condemn others if they want to vape around kids, that said, if I am in my car or walking around outside, I am not worried about random kids. One reason I quit analogs was to set a better example, and I choose to keep my vaping away from kids I influence like my niece and nephews and the kids in my Boy Scout Troop.

I agree with what Limner said:

When I smoked, I used to go to my car instead of the designated smoking area at work because a lot of the upper management offices overlook the smoking area. When I switched to vaping, I make it a point to go to the smoking area and share my new found hobby. I'm going to be escorting a friend to the local B&M to get her started and have provided links/info to several others. I want others to see it and understand it for what it is.

Demomed, I understand completely where you're coming from and I felt the same way the first couple days. I've since decided that I'm going to try and help others understand what we do simply because it is so much better than smoking.

I completely agree with vaping around kids. The owners of a B&M store near that bring let their 7 year old hang around the store. Whats awkward is that they have a sample bar there with people vaping on mods that flood the place. They even have a playstation hooked up and the kids just hangs out on the couch playing games while the owners do business. They are really nice people and even showed me some new thing but it still feels weird doing it in front of a kid.
