Because E cigarettes are quite new, and there not quite as easy to get hold of as traditional smoking products or patches/gums etc, and a lot of people haven’t really seen them before.

I’m worried about being told off, as some people (such as staff of pubs etc) would take one look at vaping and immediately see smoking (which is illegal to do in public indoor building in the Uk). And even if you showed them the device along with a document or I-pad or something with the law that sets them straight they wouldn’t back down because some people (if this makes sense) fear what they don’t understand.

vaping indoors is legal obviously, but….

Just because you can should you?

Have you ever been told not to vape indoors by anyone?

What if I’m confronted?

I have not run into any problems vaping inside establishments, but I also have not tried to vape in very many.
The key thing to remember is that even if there is no law against it, your still on private property and they can still ask you to stop or leave.

I am generally met with curiosity instead of aggression, but anything is possible.

I relate it to bubblegum . . . there are some times and places it is appropriate to "discreetly" chew gum, or vape . . . there are some times and places it's okay to blow big ole bubbles, or produce enorgmous clouds of vapor . . . and there are some times and places it simply isn't the right thing to do. Both can be distracting. Both can be annoying. And both can be considered rude behavior. Don't think of it as smoking . . . its not. But don't forget there are other people to consider.

I was on a plane just this past Monday when I noticed vapor about five seats away. I also noticed a passenger two seats from the vapor swiping it out of their face. Nothing was said, but I considered that an inappropriate time and place to vape. Outside of the airport, in the smoking area, I sat down and openly vaped with quite a bit of notice, but no one said anything. You are correct that many people don't know what it is and if it doesn't look anything like an analog, well, they may really wonder what you're doing. Later that evening, after my returning plane was delayed, I was sitting at the gate in an area somewhat to myself and pulled my PV out for a brief, discreet session with no issue.

You just have to make your decision for each situation based on the circumstances at the time.

Best wishes!!!

There must be 100 threads on this topic. The majority of posts have shown that vaping in public is a positive experience at least in the US. Many of us take the position to vape openly but respectfully. I have vaped in restruants, sports bars, court houses, stores and offices. In places like restruants, I usually show my PV to the server or manager and explain it and demonstrated it if needed. I also don't blow huge plumbs of vapor all over the place or towards others. I've only been asked not to once.

It also helps if your PV looks nothing like the real thing. I get either positive feedback that I quit smoking or no feedback at all. It also gives us all the opportunity to present vaping in a positive light and something that is safe for those near by. The more opportunites we have to show that vaping is NOT smoking and a positive behavior change, the more support we will garner for vaping.

Not vaping openly and repectfully in public but instead hiding it, just reenforces the perception that vaping should be banned.

In the last few hours:

I vaped in the car with the windows rolled up with my non smoking wife.

I vaped in a restaurant.

I vaped in a furniture store. A customer saw me, asked about it, I gave him this website and a few other sites.

If you act like you are doing something wrong, you are. Now, if you live in the People's Republic of California, it's a different story.

i agree, perception plays a huge role in vaping. i always try not to look shady. then again, when i blow out some vapor, and put my PV back in my pocket, most people pay no attention, unless they think i stuck a lit cigarette in my pocket.

Though it might be a hoot if you "ground it out" in your palm while grinning and laughing maniacally. Then look up at them and give a little wave.
Or not.
Personally, I would.

In one month I have only had two people ask what I'm doing. Both were not management but customers. I told them that I have been using it since December 31st and have used it and only it since January 18th. Both were very impressed and offered me encouragement.
I love people.

When I brought my first e-cig at work, I was anticipating some negative feedback...was REALLY surprised when all I got were questions and attagirls! Everybody was incredibly positive about it! Some of them said they were actually SORRY they couldn't smell the Buttery Mint and Peach e-juices I was vaping on! You're right, people are pretty great!

I have no problem vaping in Walmarts, grocery stores, and coffee shops like Denny's. At nicer restaurants I always ask first. I was only denied once and that was at an Olive Garden in Escondido, California. They told me it was a family restaurant and that my vaping would, in effect ruin the image.

I have vaped at that Olive garden, they never even noticed LOL.

I went to the movies on Thurs night. It was a smaller theatre, and the movie had been out for a while, so there was not many people around. I picked a seat away from most people at the back and vaped moderately throughout the whole movie. When I blew out the cloud I made sure to blow it up in the air and not straight ahead over everyone. No one infact bothered me about it or even asked, but in the event that I was asked, I didn't want to have to explain it while watching a movie. I have no problem informing people, just not right then lol

I'm of the same opinion, be courteous, don't blow it on anyone because they will probably get their back up before the conversation even starts. Blowing anything in someone's face or around them is pretty rude anyway and having them get offended is something I would expect.

Also, everyone is right, my stainless eGo looks nothing like an analog, and as such, makes it easier to explain. The guys I work with have no problem with me vaping in the company truck with the windows up, and most love it when I'm dripping something a little sweeter like candy apple or cotton candy, because I find you can smell the sweeter flavours when in closed spaces like that...It certainly smells better then 3 or 4 sweaty construction guys in a truck lol
