I believe that most will agree that you should ask first and be prepared to explain your device and what it does (often using words like "personal vaporizer" or "electronic nicotine device" instead of "electronic cigarette" - depending on the situation) and when given permission you may vape. Another option is to simply vape away and see what happens.. but be prepared to explain your device if someone should ask you to "put out that smoke".

Of course remember that you are always on someone's private property and "no" means "no" (and often, ignorance can't be helped).

I've vaped in resturants, stores, hospital, doctor's office, post office and sports bars with no issues. In a restrurant or sports bar I usually tell the waiter or manager about my PV and what it is. If they don't want me to use it (only happened once), I respect their wishes. I don't go back there but I don't make a fuss. I also have a small card I have made up to pass out to the curious because many people want to know more. It is also a big advantage to vape a PV that looks nothing like an analog which is what I do, using a variable volt Darwin.

I did it once in the main area of the mall where I bought my first Ecig. A security guard came running towards me within seconds of my first exhale yelling stop stop!!!! I explained that it was a personal vaporizer I had bought and used in the store where I bought it but he just repeated that it was not allowed and to put it away or leave. I was embarrassed and have not vaped indoors in public since. I wished the store that sold it to me would have let me know it was not welcome in the main area of the mall.

My rules indoors in a bar, I use it. In a restaurant I ask and I've never been turned down. In a main mall (I never go there.), I'd do it and let security do what they want. Contrary to most people's instinct, the less it looks like a cigarette, the less problems you will have. People hate smoking and if you look like you are smoking, they will treat you vaping the same way. I use a homemade box mod everywhere.

What is the proper etiquette that one should use?

The proper etiquette would go some thing like this. Vaping is not smoking so you need not fear to vape your pv indoors in public. One should however take precautions not to draw attention to oneself. You should not vape in a manor that immediately reveals the fact that you are vaping. One should take short drags with the pv as cuffed as possible in ones palm and hold the vapor in for as long as one can. One should never flash there pv around in a manner that is arrogant. Nor should one conduct there's self pugnaciously by blowing there vapor out in large clouds and in the direction of bystanders. If one is caught vaping and is told that there is no smoking in this establishment one must tell the person they are not smoking and that they are vaping and electronic cigarette. If the person says not to do that then dont argue just say ok and stop using your PV until the person is no longer looking in your direction.

One should never ask permission to vape in a public building. By asking you will lesson your chances to be able to do so. I vaped the whole way across the country on air planes and in several airports several times. Any smoker required to travel for there work by plane knows how painful this can be. Getting away with vaping during this mode of transportation made my travel a thousand times less painful. I never asked permission one time to vape and I dont think you should.

The only public place I have vaped so far is in a bar ...havent had a problem, mostly curiosity. I just sat down ordered my drink and started to vape, the bartender already new what it was as he is a smoker and had bought one of the 10.00 saturday night specials from a gas station to use if he couldn't get away from the busy...
