I hate that I keep dragging you all back in here time and again.... Just want to make sure we're getting off on the right foot. I keep reading reviews to things and going why would they recommend this if people hate it, but I have to remember that the majority of reviews are prompted by *not* liking something rather than by being satisfied with a product so negative reviews can often unjustly outweigh positive ones. Thanks so much guys, much love!

I'm sorry but I don't quite understand what you're saying? If it's in relation to myself or my comments I won't be hurt- just want you to end up with the best and hassle free deal available.

No, no not at all!!!!! I love that you all are taking time to lead me through this! I'm an obsessive review reader and it often shoots me in the foot! I need to think less and trust you guys more. I'm totally on board with following you guys' lead... I just over think things sometimes. There is an abundance of products and it can be a little overwhelming. I'm so glad I found this forum!

It can be overwhelming for anyone including myself. Here are your choices (as I see it)
1/ An eGo class set voltage PV( 3.7 volts)
2/ A Variable Voltage Twist or Spinner
3/ A PV such as the Gripper- set voltage @ 3.7 volts
# 1 and 2 the battery contains all the electronics- good for about 250- 300 recharges. Once the battery dies the whole unit is tossed in the garbage.
#3, the Gripper, takes separate batteries and when the batteries die you only buy new batteries- less than $10 for 2 batts.
Long term a PV such as the Gripper is economically your best bet BUT some don't like the "box" look.
Hopefully your husband will take to vaping...then down the road he could consider other options and watch for sales. Pretty well everything I have bought has been on sale and the savings have been immense. Do you think he would mind a box Mod?
To clarify about the voltage dials on the Twist and Spinner here are some pics.

Hi Tracie, here are a couple of ideas from someone very new to vaping:

- just tell him it is not really intended to do anything but make it more convenient so he doesn't have to step outside for a smoke every time (I got mine just to get me through one day a week where I couldn't smoke for 4 - 4-1/2 hrs ... Now down from about a pack and a half per day to 2 or 3 and for the first time in my life feeling that quitting completely might be achievable - having no pressure/expectations really helped for me)
- I'm not a menthol smoker but just loved the mint in the "After Eights" ... Get some non-tobacco flavours also like sweets, berries etc as he might be surprised at what he likes to vape
- keep it dead simple to start - ego & clearomizer was a great start for me and I'm sure any of the simple equivalents suggested would be fine also

Good luck (and he is lucky to have you doing all the research!!!)

Ok, so thanks to Bad, Vapoor and my friend Laura all recommending ego batts and Vapoor clearly preferring the Spinner for its ease of use I've set up a cart on hoosier with a spinner, a charger (already have a million wall adapters), the clearomizer suggested by Bad and Vapoor and a cartomizer (since it was cheap and will give him the option of seeing what he likes best). Now he just needs to go select his colors and we're off to the races........ well except for ejuice. Now its time to look for ejuice... some one shoot me. Definitely going with a sampler pack to let him play around and find what he likes, as someone suggested that he may not find a good enough "newport" flavor. *insert "bangs head against wall" smiley here*

Thanks you all, much much love and respect!!

You know Tracie, after years of smoking you'll be surprised what his favorite ADV will eventually be. He is DAMN lucky he has you to do this research for him. I too do not smoke or vape but I am a researcher.
In my husband's case, he wanted to switch and then chose a greensmoke (not advised), then switched up to a VV Chinese-ish mod, then to a provari. I DIY all his juices as well. Just `cause juices get a little pricey. Not so much as analogs were though!

Right now hes vaping a DIY cool Punch, before that it was Sweedish Fish, before that was Chai Tea!

That's awesome, I see another obsession in my future!!!

I am also a 40's male that wanted simple and menthol so I am gonna add my bad advice :)

DO NOT let him even try a mall, gas station or 7-eleven e-gic!! The taste is absolutely horrible and I almost never tried it again. It will turn him off in a heartbeat.

He wants to replicate a real cig - fine. Get a small auto battery and some prefilled cartomizers just to get him hooked. As much as I am trying to get away from small units I can say it worked for me as a transition stage.

I started with Vapor4life 808 auto batteries and 2 packs WOW juice carts. They hit just like a menthol cig but better. I am sure there are cheaper options and I urge you to compare but you don't want his first exposure to be a bad one.

WOW Smilin' Special menthol has that semi harsh throat hit, like a cig, that he will crave for awhile and the menthol is smooth.

All he'd have to do is screw on a prefilled and puff. I bought a 99 cent pocket tire pressure gauge and took the clip off and put it on my ecig so it wouldn't escape my shirt pocket and I could whip it out a puff as needed. Looked like a pen and no one bothered me.

Granted I think the 808 style is a dead end but those auto batteries are the closest I found to the real thing for starting out.

Just something to consider. Once you get him on the juice you help him get a 'real' kit.

I DIY my husband's e-juices for a few reasons. It saves quite a bit of money. I like to experiment. I like to mix things. I was a chemistry major and my day job has nothing to do with my schooling. It tickles my "inner chemist", even though I know darm well I'm ony mixing concentrate Nic A to VG +PG+measured flavors. Not REALLY doing any reactions (unlike making lye soap, that was fun).
and unlike doing the juice gamble I can tailor make juices to his specs. I have 18 teas I make. Found out he really hates coffee vapes and itsn't too fond of vanilla. Oh and if there was a way to inject him with Koolata he would do it. He loves the stuff! (it gives a cool finish without a menthol flavor)

But first, get through your hurdle of converting your hubby from smoker to vaper. Don't worry about 100% transition.
The evil little vaping secret is.. As his taste buds LIKE the taste of the vapor they'll be healing up making his analogs taste like *YUCK*... The plus at first is cutting down his smoking till he'll like vaping more than he did smoking. My husband did it in a day or two. Withdrawls are nasty. he was hallucinating. Beware of shadow spiders skittering across the room. The extra little "gifts" the cig manufactures add to analogs take a while to leave the body.

Once he starts *really* tasting his beer he'll be a happy man ! You'll hear "Even my BEER tastes better!"

not that i think you need another confusing chime in but here it goes... DIY will take some research so maybe get him started out on something first then do your research on how to diy and try to replicate it. Also what i found when i switched i also smoked menthols but shortly after vaping i found i got over the fresh air feeling of it and i honestly don't like menthol juices anymore so don't make it like thats the only option he has is menthol because he might like something else. I switched to a sort of pipe tobacco flavor which i never really liked smoking pipes and today i'm using a pecan roll juice which i put aside months ago and swore i'd never use. tastes change and honestly if you handed me a real pecan i'd never eat it but after vaping it for a while i like it. so it's better to not limit yourself to what you think you'll like

It's nice to see non vapers/ smokers getting involved because of loved ones that are in need. Kudos to all you wonderful Ladies

Edit: need to be politically correct here...and to all you wonderful guyz

I agree, do NOT DIY at first. Buy vendor samples/juice. Find out WHAT he likes to vape. No use spending a lot on flavors and have them sit and grow old on the shelf. Just consider it an option way down the road IF he sticks to vaping. Till then there are a lot of good vendors out there with quality juices. and I need not mention concentrated NIC is dangerous to be around the house and little ones/pets. Although there are ways around this and still DIY (you can buy the stuff pre-diluted, or mostly diluted and add flavors, etc)

Wow, so excited!! Craig sat and looked at the different options with me, he doesn't like the gripper mod, so he's deciding between the kgo and the spinner. He also told me that he plans to make the switch completely and stop smoking all together! He wants to use this as a smoking cessation device rather than a replacement for smoking. I hope he's able to succeed, but I won't mind if he likes vaping and continues to do so... it looks like it has the potential to be much cheaper than smoking cigs and quite a bit healthier too.

Thank you everyone!!

That's really great news Tracie! I know you're primarily doing it for the budget, just like my wife and I did, but the long term health benefits are indeed priceless for not only Craig but the entire family. And with initial purchases, your first month will be about the same, but next month will be greatly reduced costs! Win win win win :)
