I know their official position on this, but, the wife and I are going to Texas next Friday from Ca., and we have a private compartment. Has anyone safley vaped when in the compartment out of sight? My concern, I guess, is what they use for smoke detection. Anyway, if you or anyone you know, has expierenced this, please let me know. Thanks.

I have ridden Amtrak twice since I began vaping in 2012. I didn't have a compartment, but I vaped freely in the restrooms. No alarms went off. Also they have whistle stops where they allow smokers to smoke by the train. I can't imagine that vaping in your roomette will be a problem, but if you feel uncomfortable just step into the bathroom.

Great I was wondering about this as I have a trip coming up.

Been gone from here a while but need to start coming back. I feel like a babe lost in the woods. Good thing is some of my long distance friends are vaping instead of smoking.

Smoke detectors do not detect smoke, but particles in the air. I've had the smoke alarm in my apartment go off from taking a shower and boiling water for pasta. But always a good idea to cover your own .... especially while traveling.

Smoking and Non-Smoking Policies

All Amtrak trains, Thruway buses and stations are entirely non-smoking except for the Auto Train.

Electronic smoking devices, such as electronic cigarettes, are not allowed in any area on trains, on Thruway services, in stations or in any other location where smoking is prohibited.
On Auto Train, passengers may smoke only in a designated, enclosed smoking room located on the lower level of the Lounge Car. Smoking is not permitted in bedrooms or bathrooms.
If such a car is not on a train due to an equipment substitution, then that entire train is non-smoking.

Passengers may smoke on station platforms at longer stops as announced by train crews.

Passengers must remain next to the train, ready to re-board immediately upon hearing the sound of the locomotive horn and the "all aboard" calls from Amtrak employees.
Smoking stops may be shortened or eliminated entirely if the train is operating late.
State or local laws may prohibit smoking on station platforms.

Seems very uninformed to me.
I am want to take my fist Train trip Form Dallas to Virginia to visit family and to say I traveled on a train. Sound like I'll have to vape in stealth mode.
