Vaping on or going back to smoking? Still undecided.

After 30 years of smoking, cigarettes were absolutely knocked out of my life by the magic of vapor. I may eventually get down to zero nicotine, but I'll keep vaping, I think. It's actually satisfying, where cigarette smoking was just a gross, tedious habit.

Hi Emmalfal,

Ultimately, it would be nice to get down to zero nicotine if everything else remains the same. It's true also how fast the cigarette consumption goes down as soon as one starts vaping. I went from 2 packs to one or two cigarettes a day instantly and despite the initial frustrations of finding the right liquid and device.

I'm not a doctor but I think vaping beats everything else for someone wanting to quit smoking.

all those cigalikes suck, I too went for something that looked, feeled, and tasted like real cigs and the only thing that got me to quit was the exact opposite, halo tritons and tribecca ejuice

now im using mech mods and don't quit cigs for someone else, do it for you

Hi EvilGenius,

Just to let you know that I got a fever and the only prescription is... well you know :)

The fun part comes when you realise that vaping is actually more fun than smoking. I love walking, and within a few days of stopping tobacco I could walk three times as quickly without breaking into a sweat or coughing. I like that.

As an ex-pipe-smoker I also like the fact that pipe cleaners are no longer in my life. The ones that used to come out of the pipe covered in black tar. The ones that would drop an indelible drip onto my shirt. I no longer have to buy so many shirts.

Changing flints in a lighter - pain. Buying lighter fuel and keeping it somewhere safe - pain. All gone!

Trying to light a pipe in the wind/rain even with a good zippo - pain! Gone as well.

Smoking a cigarette in the wind - the wind smokes your cig before you do. Pain! Gone.

But a good cigar? I used to like Upmanns and may have one again one day. Cigars are special.

Good luck!

DavCav, one of my early issues was the lack of flavor in most juices. The cause was my tobacco deadened taste buds. If you find the right juices that are rich in flavor, that problem will go away and the tobacco flavored juices will kill the need for a smoke.

ITCVapes | Gourmet e-Juice Priced Affordably is a vendor that produces juices with rich flavor. Those vendors exist, but it's hard to find one that suits your tastes. ITCVapes juices are flavorful without any underlying bitterness or off taste. The good part is that you can get 50ml bottles for $11.99.

Find the juice that keeps you from going back to the smokes and you will be one more step away from total cessation. Once you find that juice, quitting cigarettes will be easy.

Hi DaveP,

After trying a bunch of liquids from different vendors, I finally found what works for me. I mentioned them already in this thread and don't want to sound like I am promoting these vendors but, for those interested, here they are one more time:

From House of Liquid
Guevara (as close as it gets to a real cigar)
Puros Dark (tobacco flavor with a coffee and chocolate undertone - however, for me it feels more like a peppery undertone)

From TripHammer
La Rica (strong tobacco flavor - no nutty - no sweet undertones)

I have read here and there these liquids are coil/cartomizer killers yet they seem ok for me. And if the price to pay to enjoy these flavors is replacing cartomizers/tanks more often, so be it.

Yes, cigars are special. I will not exclude them from my life completely.

Hi friend, ex 30 year smoker here. It's been almost a year for me off the cigarettes. I'm not going to beat around the bush here, and I'm going to cut right to the chase. For this to work YOU HAVE TO WANT TO QUIT. No matter what equipment what juice used, if you don't want to quit, or put effort toward quitting FOR YOURSELF, it won't happen! I know this sounds harsh but I'm being straight with you. You had already made up your mind with out even trying that this and that is not for you. No matter what device, what flavors, if you don't WANT to quit, you WILL find fault in EVERYTHING you try. In reality there are MANY MANY options for people who want to quit in regards to vaping. But if your not ready, NONE of them will be sufficient. When your Ready, and ready to but forth effort, you will be MUCH more successful. I can promise there are wonderful options available. But it does take effort and resolve on your part NOT to smoke. It took several devices before I found what was right for me.. but I had to keep a open mind and I was willing to try any device that might help me stop. I kept determination. A resolve not to smoke and thank God in the long run, it has paid off. So ask yourself, are you ready to really quit? If so make a resolve not to smoke, keep open about trying different equipment keep open about e juice flavors, be willing to try new things. However, if your not really ready to quit, then it won't work. If the " jury is still out" as you put it. I really don't think you have decided yet to quit. When you make the decision to quit we are here to support you every step of the way. But it has to be something YOU want for it to work. I wish you the very best and do hope you decide you are ready. I know you can do it if you really want it! However if your not yet ready, its not going to work. So only you can decide if you are done or not .Best wishes.

Hi realsis,

It's true that I don't want to quit smoking because I really love it. I'm switching to vaping only to make my wife happy. For some reason, after 20 years together, she woke up one day tired of my clothes... and probably me as well smelling like an ashtray.

I know that the devices I'm using are not the best performing ones in the eyes of a hardcore vaper but they seem to be fine for someone like myself willing to vape while retaining the experience and behavior of a smoker. At least it has considerably reduced my cigarette consumption. I have switched almost 2 months ago now and during that time I may have only smoked the equivalent of one pack as opposed to my 2-pack a day habit.

So I guess even though I do not have the will to quit, this vaping thing is alright. I quickly had to up the nicotine content of my liquids to get rid of the cravings and now I'm fine.

Thank you for your support.

So to make this transition away from real tobacco permanent, there were two absolute requirements:

Manual batteries were ruled out immediately as I just could not see myself pushing a button to smoke. Also, anything that looked like I would be smoking a transistor or required building, rebuilding, rerebuilding were out as well.

these points, are what make vaping... well... VAPING, besides the physical act of vaping instead of smoking.

i was a PAD or more smoker for 12-13 years and i enjoyed smoking a pipe every night.
i never fully quit until i really got into the "FULL" aspect of the vaping world, and starting doing things myself rather then pushing money at some one to hand me gear i THINK would work good in my opinion.

at first, i was on a never ending search for something automatic - that died down as i found most auto batteries were weak and not "simulating" enough, and the fact the air is THRU the battery casing, if anything should go wrong with whatever atomizer i have it could leak into the batty and cause issues. that put me off automatics.

then i was on the search for the smallest batteries possible - 350mah egos. these were ok but i found my self carrying 3-4 batteries with me all day and i didnt like that clutter, the point was to have something simple and small. eventualy i ruled those out of my vaping life. - at this point i was still a dual user and smoking 4-5 cigs a day, 8 months AFTER i started vaping.

weeks went on trying "new" gear - was using a kanger evod for a good while, buying new heads for it and what not. it got to the point i descided to try rebuilding the coils - i did and it made it a 110% better vape. no flooding issues, no burnt hits - and it helped teach me how to "feel" for when a coil is going out or wicking bad. - i started smoking less, and completely put down the nighly pipe.

when i got an istick, i jumped fully into the rebuildable game and bought a "kayfun like" tank, havent touched a cigarette since - the rebuilding part is taking alot of my time and mind - completely forgetting about tobacco, i now have a device that works well and suited to my needs.

long story short - once you stop limiting yourself, your possibilites are endless and will most likely end up making you glad you made the switch :)

After years of not quitting analogs because I didn't have the personal desire to, even though my wife and kids nagged me about it, I finally decided to stop. Having smoked a pack a day I thought it would be tough since I failed to quit two years ago when I tried the blu cartridges. This time, I found the blu plus tanks and they helped. With the vapor volume and the throat hit (and I also think the higher nicotine content), it was just about perfect for me and I was able to quit analogs cold turkey and relying on vaping alone. This was six weeks ago. The first couple of days I had to fight the urge to pick up a cigarette, but smartly I was out and not wanting to make a trip to the store to pick up cigs helped to fight the urge. As the first week went on, the urges came less and less frequently. However, I noticed that my vaping usage went up. At first I was going through one of the blu tanks a day and by a week ago, I realized I was going through two a day (and four batteries a day). Being able to vape inside the house and not having to go outside in the cold to have a cigarette didn't help this either. At the prices they charge, it would cost me more than smoking would, so I knew I needed to find a more economical solution, which meant filling the juice myself. I already knew that I wanted a tank system, so after some research I placed an order for the Halo Triton kit last Saturday. Like you, also wanting a cig-like experience, I was intimidated by carrying this big honking thing around with me, so I also ordered a g6 kit with a bunch of mini tanks so I had something smaller that I can carry around when I am out. Got them in the mail today and I am not disappointed at all. I opted for the larger 650 batteries with the Triton kit, and I'm kinda surprised that it doesn't seem as big in person as I thought. The size of the Triton with the 650 battery and the 2.4 ml tank is about the same as a nice, beefy fountain pen. When I opened the package, I immediately charged up the batteries and filled the tank. After about 5 hours, I notice that the fill line is down to the 2.0 ml marking, so I believe that one tank would last me a whole day (although I read that with the top coil, one shouldn't go to the bottom of the tank and should refill when there's about 1/3 left). I'm using 24 mg juice and did notice that my first vaping session with it left me a tad light headed, so I should cut back on the usage a bit, and eventually cut down on the concentration.

My only wish would be if someone could come up with a convenient to use carrying case (like the blu charging case) that can hold a fully assembled one that can fit in one's pocket, with room for maybe an extra tank and battery. A salesperson from the local vape store suggested that I put it in a hinged eyeglass case.

Someone said that vaping can become an expensive hobby, and boy ain't that the truth. Before I even received the Halo's, I already placed an order for a Kanger set up with a bunch of extra tanks and a bunch of Kanger mini tanks that would fit the blu batteries (I still like the design of the blu charging pack and why waste a pair of perfectly good batteries).

I should also point out that quitting smoking was not for current health reasons. Although I have smoked for over 30 years, my only health issue is slight elevated cholesterol. At my last annual physical, the doctor did a lung capacity test and it was normal.

Hey davcav...

Just so you know we're taking bets on how long before you upgrade to a non-cigalike.
Okay, not really.

Actually, we're taking bets on how long until you start vaping cinnamon roll.
Okay, not really.

Glad it's working for you!
:)

The odds on these bets must be about a thousand to one. Not bad... worth placing a little wager :) you never know...

Hi defdock,

Glad to read that you enjoy the rebuildable thing and it keeps you busy so you're no longer haunted by tobacco. I won't even go into the rebuildable stuff. I am too much of a clumsy oaf for this. I can barely hammer a nail so anything requiring manual skills wouldn't work for me. I mean, I broke the Halo pcc the very first time I tried screwing in a battery. Broke it right out of the pack!

But everyday that goes by gets me more confident that switching was the right choice though.

Hi jseah,

It seems that you and me entered the vaping world with the same mindset and experienced similar things. I had the same cravings (which I indulged though) which then came less frequently also. I made the mistake to start with low nicotine content (6mg) and found myself sucking on these things like there were no tomorrow. So I quickly went up to 15mg and then 25mg (which I am using now) and the cravings went away almost instantly. And I did too get the nicotine buzz when I vaped the 25mg.

As far as liquid consumption, I also feel I am vaping more than I was smoking. I could smoke in the office (all chain smokers there) but had to go outside at home. Now that I can vape inside, I do vape more than I smoked. But I think it also comes from the fact that nicotine is slower to get in the bloodstream from vaping than smoking. And that's fine. Personally, I am satisfied now. Definitely no more cravings for a cigarette.

Regarding money, I didn't go into vaping so it would cost me less than smoking but I thought if it would save me some, that would be an added bonus. However, so far I spent much more on vaping than smoking. But it is the cost of trial and error I guess. Not being a very patient man, I wanted to make the switch fast so I bought a whole bunch of equipment and liquids right away so I wasted some money.

I have to say that as soon as I tried the mini tanks with the G6, I forgot about the blank cartomizers. Too much effort and mess to fill and refill them for the equivalent of 5 cigarettes (definitely not a pack). These tanks are very convenient, easy and clean to fill and no more guess work figuring if more liquid is needed. So on the cig-a-like device, I am set. I will keep on using the G6. The Halo pcc is very delicate and must be handled with care and it doesn't perform as claimed. But it's handy. Although, I just carry around 4 long batteries, two filled mini tanks and a small bottle of liquid. It's not bad but I am looking for some kind of small carrying case to gather all this into one spot.

Yesterday, I also got the replacements batteries for the Vapor Zeus. They work ok but do not last as long as claimed. But that's fine. By now, I have learned not to take vendors' performance claims seriously. The Zeus works for me as well. I get the cigar experience. Now that I tried the mini tanks, I wish Vapor4Life would come up with a tank smileomizer so that it would be cleaner to refill and easier to monitor liquid level. I bought 2 of their 6ml tanks but they just look awful on the Zeus battery. It be nice if they had something with the same diameter as the battery, the big rubbery mouthpiece and maybe not all clear but with a little glass slit to see where the liquid level stand. Basically something with the convenience of a tank yet keeping the elegance of the Zeus when mounted on it. Elegance... not only I need more cowbell but I also need elegance!

Don't say you've smoked for 30 years and have baby lungs! Smoking is bad, smoking is bad, smoking is bad :) See? I learn fast being on this forum only a couple of weeks :) We're all gonna die anyway but let's die with clean lungs.

davcav,

Regarding the batteries, one thing you want to keep in mind is that with lithium ion batteries, it isn't very good to use them until they are totally dead before recharging them. Doing that definitely shortens their life. Another thing to bear in mind is that as soon as a lithium ion battery is manufactured, it begins to degrade. Generally, a lithium ion battery has a life of about 3-4 years. Perhaps you were unlucky and got some batteries that were sitting on the shelf waiting to be sold for a long time. For the Triton, it came with two 650 mAh batteries and I also picked up an additional two 900 mAh variable voltage batteries. I have yet to go through a whole day with it, so I'm not sure if the 650 will last me a whole day, but I plan on cycling through them and switch them out each day while recharging the other. At first I thought that I would prefer the automatic batteries (for the g6) over the manual, but from using the manual batteries with the Triton, it quickly becomes second nature to click on the button when you take a drag.

I never smoked inside the house, and now that I am vaping, I will vape inside the house, but I still refrain from doing it in front of the family. I remember when I first started smoking back in college, it cost me $1.25 for a pack at the gas station. With the government raising the sin taxes to pay for their day to day expenses, it now costs $10 a pack by my house. Luckily, I live outside NYC, where the additional taxes on tobacco raises the price of a pack to $12-13. I started making the 30 minute drive to the NY/PA border to buy cigarettes in PA where a carton only cost $62. I would buy 4 cartons at a time which would last me just under a month and a half. For a savings of almost $160, it was worth making the hour round trip drive. With buying the Halo's, the Halo juice and the stuff that I also ordered that I haven't received yet, I've spent about $450. I'm not sure how quickly I will go through juice, but I figure that if I spend an additional $500 on juice and replacement coils and tanks this year, I will save over $2,000 versus smoking.

For the g6, I did buy the carrying case, so it fits the two batteries, although not with a cartridge attached to it. The case was made for the cartridges and not the mini tanks, so I snipped the little raised spacing between the slots reserved for the cartridges so I have two tanks in there now.

Quitting smoking was my New Year's resolution for this year, although I had miscalculated how many packs I had left and actually didn't make the switch over to vaping until January 2.

Its easy to say you dont want to use a good ego setup or vape fruit/bKery juice, until you try them.

I was the same way i wanted something small and wanted juice that tasted as close to a marb red as possible. Once i found out most baccos are garb i decided to try a good custard. After the first hit of custard my life changed and cigs never tasted as good. Now i have 100s of MLs of juice and am always trying to find the next best flavor and not 1 of those is a bacco.

Point being most of us were like you until we tried the fruit/bakery flavors.

That's really what helped me beat it the 2nd time around, after my appendectomy -- I'd be JONESING for a cigarette, and have to just stop and ask myself: what do I really, really want? To be tied to this ball and chain for the rest of my [shortened] life? Or go back to doing a little happy dance everytime I remembered that I didn't smoke anymore? It took a month, just like the first time, but constantly reminding myself of my REAL desire, helped me beat it, and helped me be patient enough to try WTA, when the cravings came back -- and I haven't looked back!

My husband and I both still marvel at it -- I keep him apprised of my progress shown in my banner, and just tonight, he said again that he'd never expected that I would ever quit smoking -- that he'd have to visit me in the ICU the way we visited my dad when he was dying of lung cancer, and that I'd direct him to help me into the wheelchair and take me outside for a smoke. :D

I'm still at high risk of eventually developing lung cancer, I know that's true after 39 yrs of smoking -- but I sure won't be asking to be taken outside for a smoke -- I'll probably be asking for him to bring my mod so I can stealth-vape. :D

I quit smoking/started vaping Jan. 18. Been smoking more years than I care to admit. I went into someone's house today and for the first time ever I noticed cigarette smoke immediately, unpleasantly I might add. This was rather astonishing to me. I smoked two packs a day for years and never noticed the stench of cigarette smoke. Now I know how all the nonsmokers who came into my house all these years must have been half choked.

I'm free and so happy. I was one of those die hards who thought I would never be free of cigarettes, I was just so hooked. then in early January I saw someone I loved very much in a hospital bed, with a full face oxygen mask on pumping 100 percent oxygen the last few days, as she struggled for every breath. She finally lost the battle. Cigarettes took who knows how many years off her life.

Vaping is now a no brainier. Tell every smoker you know, tell them again. Buy them a disposable and tell them it's only a small idea of what vaping is like with a good unit. You may help add years to their lives.

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but flavor wise, the closest I've gotten to actual cigarette flavor is actually unflavored juice. I'm not sure if the cigarettes I smoked didn't have much flavor or what, but all the tobacco flavored juices taste way too strong. I recommend getting unflavored 50pg-50vg juice, you can add it to anything to take the bite out of harsh tobacco flavors or any other flavor for that matter. And like I say, for some reason, by itself it's the closest I've gotten to a real cigarette.

I was desperately addicted to tobacco. Kept going back to it. Part of the problem was I was a pipe smoker, and nothing can touch that throat hit and instant crack-like satisfaction. I smoked cigs too. But I have been tobacco free for over a year and I have not struggled much at all after finding the right juice and the right device.

It's all about tobacco flavored juices for me. I used Halo's longhorn and freedom juice as my all day vapes. They have the throat hit and satisfaction you need when switching from the real stuff.

For devices, you will not be successful until you use a high wattage device or use very high nicotine (18mg or greater). Dr. Farsalinos did a study on nicotine blood levels comparing vapers on different devices to smokers, and the data screams it loud and clear...you must have much higher nic levels than most people are using. Or, you need a high wattage device, then you can get away with 3-6 mg.

You also need something that is easy and always there for you.

In the past, RBA's were the only real option, but they were such a hassle. Not anymore. Anything Kayfun style will work. My current setup is an istick with a subtank mini, and it requires almost no maintenance, even using the RBA. The subtank, delta, and aspire tanks are all very, very good. Before this generation, I used the Kanger AeroTanks and ProTanks. It wasn't until I found these that I was truly able to fully quit smoking tobacco.

Blu cigs or anything else resembling a cigarette will not work. Period. They might help you, like a patch, if you are lucky and determined, but they cannot put nicotine in your body fast enough to emulate a cigarette, and will leave you frustrated. Furthermore, they break easily, and aren't there for you 24/7. You need several reliable high wattage devices to quit. That is my very strong opinion. I have smoked cigarettes at parties recently and put them out halfway, and switched back to my current eCig...I had absolutely no addict-like thoughts of smoking later or dreams of tobacco...that is how much I love my eCig setup. I have zero fears of going back to smoking now.
