Vaporshark does not appeal to me. (Screen on the bottom would drive me nuts) perhaps thats an attempt to mask the screen glitch and other anomalies

I think we are moving into derangement syndrome territory here. The VS has had the screen on the bottom since it launched -- with the DNA20.

Wow that's pretty cool actually! I assume it was quite cheap?

I think all said and done including switches, fd510, and DNA40s I have about $140-$150 in each.
Not to mention 6 RMAs back and forth with Evolv to end up with 3 (decent) boards.
But yeah they're pretty sweet very lite and ergonomical in the hand.

Oh lord, the Vapemail next week will be good.

Waidea flask just cleared US Customs.
Varitube has just shipped two tactile switches, another 14mm 510, and an SX Mini M class.
Evolv has just shipped a replacement 0.69" OLED screen ($7.50 shipped, by the way, so their repair only costs an additional two fiddy).

So, this time next week, I'll have my old Kangxin back together, hopefully my Waidea will work fine, and I'll have the SX Mini M Class.

After that, thinking about trying to fit an SX 350J board inside my Cloupor Mini, or maybe even my Kangxin housing if I can enlarge the display cutout (and then move the Kangxin board over to the Cloupor).

And thus the number one reason they have never been considered a contender to me.
And still doesn't negate the fact to me it's a goofy place to stick the display.

But to each their own I suppose.

As for the live display thing on the Waidea or Kangxin, it's a copy of Evolv's board, and it does just like Evolv does with the DNA30 and DNA40, which is to only update voltage while firing, and ohms after it's been fired once. The resistance thing in TP mode sort of makes sense, actually, since once you've said "new or same" about the coil, the large swings in the resistance while firing it and until it cools would just be confusing for the average user.

The istick 50 is sort of unique in its live display of resistance, etc.

Oh, and Bloke? Take some of that Tesco/shipping money you saved and buy a standalone 510 ohm reader. Just too handy not to have, especially when building with NI200. Also makes a darn good build surface, and will settle the argument over which of your mods is the most accurate.

I will :) For about a month it's been in and out of shopping carts - "do I really need this?" (as I spend £££s on other stuff) - but now it's definitely going in. I would like to see if my VF is out, if only to compare to everyone else's.

Fair enough re the rest, thanks for the details! And good point re potential confusion re the large resistance jumps on the nickel, I didn't think of that.

The SX300 is not a DNA30 clone, exactly, either in form factor, features, or output. Yihi's SX130 is their board that directly competes with the DNA30 in output wattage and form factor, and even it has more features than the DNA30, like reverse battery protection, the ability to buck/step down (albeit using PWM), direct DC mode, and memory presets.

Memory presets are the one thing I really liked when I saw the Yihi, I've wanted those for as long as I've been vaping. I really don't need 0.1 steps from 1 - 40W or 10 - 80W or whatever. When I do change wattage, it's always in large steps. 5 presets would cover me for 99% of my vaping I'm sure. Who really needs 37.8 versus 37.3? But I do shift back and forth between different coils of varying resistances, and it'd be nice to quickly jump to the right setting without scrolling all the time.

I just wish that didn't have to come with the rest of the Yihi's.. "features." I watched Busardo's review of the SX Mini with my jaw dropped - who the hell designed that interface and why hasn't he been shot? It looks like the most egregious over-engineering ever - "we've got this accelerometer to flip the screen.. what else can we do with it??". A shame, it looked like a nice mod besides that. I mean it probably isn't so terrible in practice, because you change the presets with the buttons and only have to waggle your stick when you want to do manual watts changes, or use the menu, which will be a small % of the time. But it just annoys me so much out of principle :)

Well, the newly released SX350J, with temperature protection, lets you use the buttons for everything that used to require using the gravity sensor. User interface is much improved as a result.

And there's a lot of modders out there that liked the original SX350 because it's "cleaner", and they don't include up/down buttons at all.

As of right now, the SX130 and SX330 (both used widely by Sigelei and Pioneer4You) don't include a gravity sensor, that's only on the SX300 and SX350.

The features of the SX far outweigh the bugs. I agree the accelerometer adjustment is rubbish but it wouldn't be a problem to enable it to be turned off. Maybe they will update that at some point (and they can cos it is updatable!). Don't get me wrong it has some issues but they are very minor to my mind. It is a fantastic device! Really fantastic!

Fair enough, yes I suppose a lot of the reason for the higher wattages just doesn't apply with temp working well (enough).

Hmm, twisted nickel, yes I need to make some of that.

What's the benefit of 28 twisted with 30, versus 2 x 28 or 2 x 30? Does the two different sizes provide a particular benefit, or are those two together simply the right compromise to get the right thickness/resistance that you like?

After building and experimenting what seems like hundreds of Ni200 builds, several of which were dismal failures
I found the work hardened, and drill twisted 28/30 Ni200 build gives me the best flavor and performance that suites my vaping needs.
  1. It keeps the resistance where I want to be
  2. Easy to work with and wick without distorting
  3. keeps heatflux where I want it
  4. Long lasting
Rewicking is a snap, I pull the old wick, boil the build deck with the coil still attached which removes all the gunk from the coil, build deck, and air passages.
blow it out, rewick, refill and vape the same vape time and time again.

Ahh, that's much better then! Damn, now I want it again :p :) And yeah I had been thinking about the IPV4 maybe, as it's much more affordable.

But Steve, I thought you had the fancy new one too, the SX350J? So you can use buttons not waggling, croak says?

Steve & Croak - I know this isn't the thread for it as such, but in one sentence: how is Yihi's TC versus the DNA 40? At least as good, I take it?

Oh nice, thanks! That's a great endorsement!

I shall order some 28 then, I only have 30 at the moment. I do love twisted wire, so I'll see what 2 x 30 is like over the weekend until I can get the 28 as well. Better than plain untwisted at least, I'm sure.

Thats true but unless you hold the damn thing vertical, it still kicks in sometimes when you really don't want it to. You know its not a big deal to me but I kinda wish it could be turned off. Not much to ask really and and not hard to implement.

i am on the fence about the work hardened wire. It is so bloody springy. At least the stuff I have is.
That's kind of the point.
When I make my coils, I tension wrap, scrunch it together, and let it naturally spring back for simple perfect spaced coils every time.
non-work hardened Ni200 is too soft and malleable and will distort if you look at it the wrong way.
Yeah I could just buy some tempered Ni200, but as it stands I have about 5 spools each of standard Ni200 I need to use up.

Next needed step in PV progression: moddable firmware! Either all open source or, as they almost certainly won't want to do that, a plugin architecture with API, and a simple desktop interface for uploading modder-created plugins. To change the UI, to alter features and add basic new ones, presets, and so on.

Or just skip all that and have an Android-based device. It'll happen, I'm sure of it. A mod with small capacitive touch screen, and built in ohms calculator, coil wrapper, DIY juice calculator/recipes, and, of course, Twitter and Facebook apps!

Because progress!

Anyway I'm going to bed. Cheers all for all your help and support today :)

Why not just build it into a smartphone, just screw you favorite atty in and vape with TP from your phone.
better yet add smartphone to the flask and talk and text from your vapeware,:2cool:

My SX Mini M won't be here until Monday, so I can't answer with any authority on its temp control, but there's a sizeable thread in this very sub-forum about it, people have had them a week now and are saying good things (gushing, actually) about the board's capability in wattage or temp mode (along with the build quality, hand feel, etc), and about Yihi listening to customer feedback and making improvements from the original SX Mini.

For anyone who has never built a dna## mod or retrofit a dna## board, placement is key. The VS screen on the bottom, while I agree is not the most cosmetically attractive, is there for a reason.

It's not that easy to put these chips in and make everything line up the way everybody would like. Sacrifices have to be made, in the case of the Vaporshark, size won over screen placement... At least that's my opinion. I personally don't own a VS and don't see myself owning one in the near future. But I think it's a better option than the Insanely boring hana, and I'm not a fan of those hana bb button tact switches either. They are fine for up/down, but not for fire. (ie: hana finger)

Well my main point was that the DNA20 and 30 had no screen issues to speak of so the claim that it's on the bottom to hide screen glitches is ludicrous.

As for the Hana, remember that the Hana was pretty much the first of its kind and remains the model on which most similar dna-style box mods are based.

TheBloke:

First I'm glad that you have it working for the time being and you finally are able to enjoy its use. It is my sincere hope that it continues to function well into the future!:toast:

You do however realize that by opening it you may have voided your warranty (unless you email them and say you shook it a few times or you noticed the top plate was a little loose & you tightened the screws a little and it appears to have started working reliably so far, so you are going to hold off on shipping it back for now) and allowed 3FVape to bully you into that action rather than comply with their own Published Policies as Advertised on their Website:

Incorrect/Damaged Goods
We try very hard to ensure that you receive your order in pristine condition. If you do not receive the products ordered, please CONTACT US. In the unlikely event that the product arrives damaged or faulty, please contact us immediately. Provided that you have contacted us first, 3FVape covers for all shipping charges for returning damaged and incorrectly shipped items.
I am a little confused as to how they got around the fact that:

  • It would cost you $100 to ship the item back with Tracking and Insurance, which you are required to use to obtain proof of delivery, track a misdelivered item or cover the cost of a lost item.

  • It is decidedly unreasonable for them to expect you to ship an item back to them without such delivery Tracking and Insurance to protect your basic interests.

  • The entire cost of Return Shipping with Tracking & Insurance is solidly 3FVape's as dictated by the above referenced Policy Published on their Website.

  • If they think that it is too high a cost, They are Welcome to provide you with a Pre-Paid RMA Shipping Label from their Shipping Company which only requires you to get a Receipt that you did indeed ship the package from the Post Office or equivalent. (While documenting the packaging of the item, attaching the RMA Label and handing it to the Clerk on Video).

  • If they are unable to provide either of the above options, You were willing to have them have a Factory Authorized Representative contact you via Skype and talk you through a Factory Authorized Repair that would Preserve your Warranty in its Entirety.

  • If all of the above options are not acceptable to them, They have the option of simply shipping you a new item to replace the old one.
While their heartfelt communication might be appreciated for what it was, they had absolutely no right whatsoever to place you in that position at all, be it at the Manufacturers Request or their own requirement which judging by dwcraig1's experience, I believe is the case. These policy changes may have been brought on by a few people who may have abused 3FVapes generosity in the past, but they seem to have overcorrected to the extreme.

:mad:It would seem the Era of Outstanding Customer Service at 3Fvape is over and they have gone from one of the best to one of the worst overnight if they do not live up to the promises they advertise on their website! While I wholeheartedly support their right to enforce the letter of their advertised customer service policies, it would seem that they are now ignoring them altogether by trying to limit return shipping costs to $15 and that bodes well for no one in the future unless we as a community do not allow them to take these liberties in the future!

While PayPal will be of little use in this matter, Credit Card Companies will not tolerate this kind of behavior from a Merchant and I wholeheartedly recommend using a Credit Card in future purchases with this company and holding them to their published and advertised policies to the letter should the need ever arise.

Rant Over! - My Apologies ALL!

I was attempting to back you up on the bottom screen issue. I guess reading it again, that didn't come across as clearly in the message as it did in my head :p sorry. Yes I agree with you the vapor shark has had the screen on the bottom since the beginning, while the dna20 board was the variable Wattage board by which all others were measured.

As for hana, that may be but I just think the hana box is f'ugly, the BB buttons are uncomfortable for fire (their ok for up/down). I never liked the look of the hana personally. But again, you are right they were one of the first, at least as far as I know anyways.
