I guess i should be making a clarification here, the OCC head i was running was a kanthol one and ive only been using the rba deck on the mini for nickel. So you two are saying even the rba deck isnt good for nickel coils?
The RBA is fine for nickel coils. The occs are ok too, but with both ni200 and kanthal, they may not make positive & secure contact because the coil leads are just held in by pressure against a rubber insulator just like in the old pro tank heads & that's not the best way of doing things.

The RBA deck is, generally, fine for Ni/Ti coils. The secret is to tighten evreything down as much as possible!

I have a couple of comments on the above video, first I almost always use a lot more wire no matter what but that amount Tripper used was a bit excessive.
When I cut the wick on the outside of the housing (using rayon) I cut it flush with the housing and take the same 3 mm rod that I wrapped the coil on and also used to put through the housing and carefully push the wick into the housing so there is no wick in the holes. I did that after try it like in the video and got much better wicking.
I'm building with nickel btw.

I tireid a rebuild and although it gives good vapour etc and seems to wick ok, the flavour is bloody awful. Like im burning juice. Could be hot legs I guess?!?!? Maybe I'll try again sometime.

So your saying that you don't like the flavor of melting rubber grommet? That was a big complaint back in the days when we rebuilt Vivi Nova heads.

I dont think that is what is going on as I actually did do that in a previous effort. Reall, really nasty. The worse thing that has happened to me in vaping so far frankly. It sport of put me off rebuilding these coils to be honest but I gave it another go. It could be that there is some rubber burning on the second effort, just less so but it doesnt really taset like that - monkey ... I believe is the busardo term for burning insulator...!!

I've had no problems using the STmini with the mini RBA head and nickel builds. Has worked well on my diy DNA40 and SX mini. Still waiting for my waidea clone to arrive to test out a ChiNA40 board.

I had hard short in the base of an Ithaca once where the NR leg got red hot and cut through an o-ring, of coarse I has taking a big hit off it at the time. Burning tire flavor.

I am pretty sure that is what happened to me with the kanker coil rebuild. Really not nice at all. I felt really .... for a few minutes. I'll certainly try not to do that again in a hurry!

I'll never forget it. LOL
I really had a hard time getting the burnt rubber taste out of the atty, an original at that.

I've had that a few times on my Smok tanks - VCTs and GCT - as when I first started out vaping those were the only tanks I had, but I wanted to do building, so I was rebuilding the coil heads.

I got too fancy and was trying to put big twisted wire coils in there and all sorts, and had a few shorts.

My iStick 50W protected me a good deal, but it was never able to cut the power off quite quick enough to stop that burnt smell - when I later looked at the rubber insulator grommit, there was often a visible burn/scorch mark, but it never burnt all the way through.

Incidentally, talking about rebuilding coil heads for nickel, the Smok coils are well worth considering - they have 4 large holes, 3mm each, two for juice and two for air. So they provide good wicking and good airflow, and there's a decent amount of space in there to get a larger coil in (my above experiences not withstanding).

The Smok VCT is a fairly basic tank, but priced accordingly - £15 in the UK, I think $18 in the US - pretty much half the price of the better tanks. The Smok GCT is £20 / $25, and comes with 2 Ni200 coils, and is a bit better constructed.

And they've just released the Smok VCT Pro which I've yet to look at, but I'll almost certainly get it just to complete my set!

The nice thing about the Smoks is they have one of the largest (perhaps the largest) range of different coil heads. Single coil: 1.2ohm x 2 (one with juice control), 0.5 ohm x 2 (one with juice control); Dual coil: 0.4 ohm Kanthal; Nickel: 0.2ohm Ni200. Edit: and then new Smok VCT Pro comes with yet another two coils! - 0.2 and 0.6, with "rectangular vertical juice flow" like the Arctic Horizon I think it is. But no word yet confirming it's compatible with the other coils; surely it should be though.

And then also an (optional extra) RBA deck designed for dual coil but also usable in single coil, with massive juice flow and a juice control ring, making it way better for wicking than the Sub Tank mini RBA. It also has an interesting design, whereby the coil(s) do not attach to posts on the deck, but rather the wires feed down through holes in the deck, and then connect to the main body of the head, exactly like in a stock coil - separated by a rubber insulator grommit. That makes building it rather nice because you have a whole deck to work with, no posts in the way (hence fitting dual coil into that small space).

But maybe that would be sub-optimal for nickel builds, for the "lead length" reasons people mentioned earlier.

Anyway, I do recommend checking out Smok tanks if you haven't already, at least to rule them out as suitable for you. Especially if you're on a budget - getting two VCTs for nearly the price of one Atlantis can be rather useful.

I want the VTC pro, but I would like them to release some ni200 coils for it. I still may order one up though, just to have a high wattage clearo on hand for random acts of cloud chucking when I don't feel like wicking up a RDA.

Are you supposing therefore that the Ni200 coils for the VCT/GCT do not fit in the VCT Pro? Or you know that for sure? I could find no mention, positive or negative, on the Smok product page or a couple of other places I looked.

If the new tank will not take the old coils then that sucks and I probably won't buy it - it'll also be damn annoying that they called it the "VCT Pro".

SMOK also make a OCC for the atlantis!!! Hwvnt tried them yet - still usng the Eleaf melo heads that also work in the Atlantis!

Oh wow, I'd never heard of that! Just Googled on it. Interesting, 0.33 ohm. Have you found a UK vendor for them? EDIT: never mind, now I see the proper name (Atlan-V1) I see UK vendors. Thanks!

Yes, that is correct, the ni200 coils / any coils / RBA for the VCT/GCT do not fit the VCT Pro.

Carl Richardson on youtube tried a VCT coil during his review, and it would not even screw into the base.

Its around 17 minutes in if you don't want to watch the whole thing.

I think myepack has them, or at least they were liosted there at some point!

I think I also saw the the vct pro will take the old heads and vice versa but I might have imagined it!

...errr just saw Dan's post...I imagined it..lol!

more OT but I think the new Atalantis 2 heads dont work in the original but maybe I mimagined that too...;)

Think you've been doing a bit of imaging lately mate.. the Smok coils don't work in the VCT Pro, the Atlantis 2 coils do work in Atlantis 1 and vice versa, and myepack doesn't have the Smok Atlantis coils :D
