Also it came set at 450 degrees, should I change that?

Temperature protection only works with Ni200 coils, it won't do anything with Kanthal (and the dna is smart enough to know the difference, so it won't attempt to use TP on a Kanthal coil.) If you want to keep from burning your cotton, set it around 400-410 degrees. Otherwise, just set it to whatever gives you a satisfying vape. But remember in any case that it only works with nickel wire.

A watt is a watt. Are you sure it's not just a problem with your build? How's it fare on your other device(s)?
