Hi, Im using a kayfun 5. All reviews says the flavour is great but mine is just average. I've used other rba's such as the protank 4, wotofo troll and the obs engine nano. On All of these the flavour and vapour is just average not great. Everyone says that building your own coils makes great flavour and smoke productions.

My current strategy is just to wrap kanthal wire around a nail
And put cotton through it.
Should I be doing it a special way? Does size of coil and wire affect the flavour and vapour production?

Am I doing something wrong, should I invest in an ohm's machine... Will that help or is this just the way rba's are?
What I have found out is the more surface area of the coil at lower ohms the more flavor you get. Also it all depends on airflow and shockingly the drip tip. The more airflow you have the more vapor, but the less flavor you will have. In regards to the drip tip if you have a wide drip tip with a cool slow burn vape the less flavor you will get also. The goal is dense warm vapor for flavor.

See how everyone's way to get a great vape is different? Focus on simple, quality builds, learn how to read and calculate for it, and then tweak to your tastes. Look at YouTube for build tutorials. Grab a coil making kit with an ohm reader. Use Steam Engine. Read around here and ask questions!

Be aware that "cleanliness" matters when building. Uniformity, coil positioning, wicking etc. all count and we're talking tiny variances that can fudge up your vape. Don't worry about that so much right now, but work on keeping things nice and tidy as you wrap your coils. Don't be discouraged if it takes a while! Just enjoy things and be safe.

[EDIT] Don't be afraid to post pics, either. They can be a big help in troubleshooting.

You didn't say what tank you were using that gives you better flavor than the rebuildable tanks. There is nothing wrong with kanthal, but what are you wicking it with, I seem to get better flavor from organic cotton. There is also nothing wrong with using a nail to wrap a coil as long as you know the mm of the nail. When I first started building my coils I went to a hardware store and bought a couple different mm machine screws to use as coil jigs. You can read your ohms resistance on your mod and use steam engine to properly gauge your coils. I finally bought a coil masters kit that has all the tools and an ohms reader and coil building became much easier. Like others said you need to do the research and learn how to properly build and wick coils. You tube video reviews on your various tanks, the reviewer sometimes does a coil tutorial and go to the rebuildable section on this site for any questions you have

It takes a while to get it down, but once you do, no pre made coils can compare...I know drop in coils are darn good these days but back when I started vaping if you wanted a great vape, you had to do your own coils. Rebuilding is definitely a hobby and you need to be into it and devote some time to get it right, even now after 7 years of doing nothing but my own coils, sometimes I might add a touch more or a touch less cotton and the flavor suffers, but a quick redo and it's good to go.. imo the trickiest part is the wicking, because like I said, a few strands either way effects flavor....for me a small chambered single coil rebuildable rta is best like the kayfun mini v3, erlkonigin, gem, etc. A single kanthal coil at 2.5 ish mm ID sitting about 1.5 to 2mm above AF works best for me. Also AF in the mtl or restrictive lung inhales that's not to open, imo AF that's too wide open saturates flavor...I use 26g for the most part in the .7 to 1 ohm range and 28g in the 1.3 ish range....for me rayon has the best flavor....and wattages needs to be dialed in, in my builds they shine between 20 and 24 watts...good luck my friend ..btw, I do have a k5 and imo the chamber is just a tad big and although it's pretty good for flavor, it doesn't match my smaller chambered rtas
