I found I get alot of juice traveling up when I tried 3 strands instead of 4. It still happens but I chalk it up to condensation. Also when I wrap the coil I wrap it around all the wicks. If you're doing it like it came stock you I'm guessing you are putting "feeder" wicks on top of your coil. If that's the case you might want to try wrapping around all the wicks. I hardly get any juice coming up doing it that way.

Yeah, I wrap coil on a single wick and then I put two strands on top of the coil just like the stock build using all 1mm hemp. It still performs well, but not only I get juice in mouth once a while it also seems to leak slightly in the bottom occassionaly. I'll try that on my next rebuilding. Are you using silica wick?

The rope taste is normal, but goes away after a few hits. I tend to wrap my coils tight. If the flavor starts to get "dry" light sharp blows gets her wicking again. I tried cotton (butcher's twine and peaches and cream yarn) and the 1mm hemp has been the winner for me. Then again hemp holds a special place in my past. :)

BJ in the other thread you wrote....I do not use 10 wrap 25 watts normally , just used it as an example, I normally use a oval coil, 4mm x 2mm 6/7 wraps around two parallel 2mm bits or toothpicks, 2.1 ohm on 28g or 2.4 ohms on 30 g at 9 to 12 watts, with 4mm of hemp thru the coil and 2mm of hemp overwick (flavor). The oval lets me make a large coil for a small space like in the Vivi or the A7. I use a lot of stepdown PTs with a 12v/24v source, some with up to 10 amp capacity for testing.

Could you explain what is an overwick? Can you use it in a genesis atty or its strictly for the Vivi Novas? Any pictures would be appreciated...thanks.

An overwick is something I started a while back, putting an extra wick on top of the coil, the Chinese have now started using it and they call it a flavor wick. The reason I started using an oval coil was to get more 28g wire in the small space and at the same time have a large enough coil to hold enough wick to keep up with my heavy vaping. You are right on the lag with the 28 and now use 30g most of the time. I have never had much luck with the genesis and organic wick. Looking forward to a BD13 on the way for me to test. Really hoping we get a ceramic on a Genesis that will keep up. I have kind of lost my love affair with Genesis. Maybe the BD13 will bring me back.
Here is one of my cotton overwicks on a Vivi.

Here is an oval wick loaded with bamboo, legs wrapped with bamboo to keep them wet so no hot spots, after installing, I lay four more threads over the top.

Thanks BJ...so the overwick is something that can enhance the flavors in Vivi Nova type atties....I was hoping to be able to use it in a genesis type atty...is there a way to this on a genny?

I know what you mean about genesis atties....the whole point of them I thought was to be able to use ss mesh with them. But lately I have experimented with all types of wick material on my gennies. Every one of them seems to work better than ss mesh....well at least taste better than ss mesh. Now I am mostly using silica...because even though the organic materials vape great I like the convenience of being able to do dry burns. I make my tail that goes into the tank very short so the genny become more like a bottom dripper...you can vape to the last drop without the juice getting one shade darker.

JUst a continuation on the conversation from the other thread....IF you haven't tried it already....next time instead of doing 7 wraps with the 28g wire try 5. You will be very surprised at the vape a 28g coil 1.4-1.5 ohm can provide. The response time will improve a lot. I used to do 8 wraps of 30g to get 2 ohm coils and the vape of the 28g 1.4ohm coil I thought was richer and more mellow and cigar like.

I have a couple of A7s with 1.4 28g oval coils and they vape great with my hemp wicks, but I drip in them after every five draws. My double draws are 10 to 12 seconds, most of my commercial PV's limit me to 10 seconds, but I don't have that problem with my PTs. I once stated that good vaper for me was when I inhaled more than I could blow out in one exhale. So you can appreciate that I need a wick that can keep up and have been on that quest for over 4 years. The SS 635 can keep up but as you say, the flavor is just not there, not to mention that at any moment you can get a short and a harsh hit. I try to keep my harsh hits to a minimum after more than 50 years of torturing my throat and lungs with two packs a day unfiltered, several cigars a day, and an occasional pipe, inhaling all. For now hemp is the best for me and I play with the wire gauge and wraps to give me a lot of vapor, (tweaking volt or watts), a lot of flavor and zero harsh hits. I am setting up an A7 with 4 2mm hemp wicks with one wrap of wire around each wick, just to see if I can make a sub that can work for me. On all my lab test with the wicking lamp tests, hemp was the fastest. Right now the inverted V coil on hemp in a A7 is my best vape.

OH wow BJ...now I get where your coming from. I thought I was bad for smoking Gauloise Coporals and Gitanes unfiltered (They make lucky strikes and PAll Malls seem like ultra lights). But I never took long hard hits off of unfiltered cigarettes. I see why you have wicking issues....vaping 100%VG and then taking twelve second hits while not doing the genesis tilt will dry up most wicks fast. Again from the other discussion we were having most SLR vapors take two second hits....and that is why they/I like the particular set up because you get instant gratification. Vaping on an SLR coil and doing twelve second hits would just tear up your throat.

So i have tried different type of cottons on gennies and they vape great initially but they get gunky very fast and even after rinsing the cotton I had to change the cotton every day.....which wouldn't be too bad on a dripping atty but is really a pain in a genny. Does the hemp gunk up like the cotton? I have read your hemp thread...you mentioned each wick lasts about two weeks. How do you maintain the wick and not have it all gunk up? Is it possible to keep the wick gunk free and not have to take it out of the coil to keep it clean? I plan on using it in gennies instead of the silica. With silica I rinse the wick after every tank and I dry burn the coil every two days....I change the wick once a week (every 50-60 ml).

So I played a little and made a 28g cloverleaf coil or two figure 8s at 90 degrees from each other. Set it in and A7 with four 2mm vertical hemp wicks, Each hemp wick thru one leaf of the four leaf clover. It ohms at .9. Stuck it on my mechanical and so far so good. Pretty harsh with my long draws but not burning, getting better as the battery gets down to 3.4v. For me it could never be my all day vape.
EDO- I stay away from juices that gunk a lot. Right now my favorite and IMO the first and only true tobacco is Hangsen Ry1 at one drop per ml. My second evening juice is Hangsen Cigar, both are almost clear and very little gunk. At ten days I usually just change the hemp and dry burn the coil when I remove the old hemp. I am using mostly BCC so it is very easy and the wicks are only about 1/2 inch.

On average I used to take 5-6 second draws before I started vaping on sub ohm coils.....now I take 2-3 second drags. I am surprised that you don't take shorter draws now with the sub ohm coils. My atties never remotely heat up like that. It could be that you don't have nicotine in the juice. I would get loopy if I kept the same vaping patters as before.

I mainly use Hangsen RY4. The liquid is clear but for example if you vape it in a genny with a straw type wick....by the end it will get a 100 shades darker and totally opaque. It makes the silica gunky near the coil. I have to make the tail that goes into the tank very short (1/4 inch) or else it would creep back into the tank and make the juice darker as well. I'll definitely try the RY1 next time I purchase some concentrate. I can do with out the gunk and the hassle of constantly rinsing the wick.

BJ do you recommend the hemp because it is organic or because you feel it performs better and tastes better than silica? When I tried silica and cotton side by side I thought both performed about the same and tasted great. I gave the silica the edge because you could dry burn it and because it didn't gunk up as fast.

Ry4 has a lot of sugar as does VG so extreme wire heat will cause gunk (burnt sugar) rapidly.
Kerosine lamp test with 2mm silica and 2mm hemp w[cks. The hemp was over 4 times faster. Test was basically how fast it took to burn 3 ml of kerosene in a mini lamp. So hemp wicks better and IMO on tobacco flavor (Hangsen), hemp enhances them. If you read my Just Hemp thread you will see I am using a combo silica/hemp on my Evods and they are great.

BJ43, I have learned a lot from your posts on various threads but never found a need to put my 2 cents in. I know that I have much more to learn before asking questions that have been answered many times before, so I tend to keep on reading. Besides my lack of experience and shortage of vaping equipment, I have a few things in common with you. I vape 100% VG these days due to a fear of certain issues I experienced may be PG related. I like a relatively cooler vape and I like to take longer drags than my little Ego will let me.

I've been vaping on beginner equipment so far but that is going to change very soon. I'm have a Saber Touch and Kick on the way. I'm building an 18500/18650 mod myself that may also give me what I'm looking for as long as the C&K 3 amp switch holds out. In terms of RBAs I have started with an Octopus just to get my feet wet, pardon the bad pun. The coil that came with it is great but I have nothing to compare it to other than cartotanks and Kanger clearos. It's going to need rebuilding soon enough so 28g and 32g Kanthal is on the way along with 10 feet of silica wick. I will try your coil wrapping method at least once, but I will have many wraps to try being the noob that I am.

I'm not too impressed with silica wick which led me to this thread and the other one you started- Just hemp. Following your link to Ebay in post #1, I started looking for other places to buy the same wick and I found this Hemp Twine Natural 20# 1mm 430Ft 130m. It looks like the same thing in the pictures. If that is the same wick I will buy it as soon as you respond to my post in this thread. I'm not afraid of using silica, but if this hemp fiber works better and is many times cheaper I would definitely prefer to use it.

Thank you very much for sharing all your knowledge on this subject, it has helped me very much.

Thank you very much for the answer I wanted to hear! Only 9 left in stock now, thanks to me (I only bought one). 430 feet should last a very long time. The Amazon price is much better than on Ebay, but the quantity is very limited.

Now if I could just find a way to accurately measure the ohms on a coil. $20 ohms readers are hard to find anywhere in stock, but for that price one could order a Vamo from China for $30 and have something a little more useful. I don't want to buy another multimeter just to find out that it can't read low ohms any better than the one I have already. It reads true on batteries which is nice, but I really bought it just to check coil resistance. It reads 1.6 just holding the leads together, I could subtract 1.6 from coil resistance results but I don't trust the thing. If a Vamo is not going to be a decent ohm reader, I don't know what to do. All this has probably been said on many threads, many times before. I apologize, no response is necessary.

I like the double wick coil wrap in post #111. I saw a video with a very similar wrap that I am hoping to try when the Kanthal and wick arrive. I apologize for the noob observations, and thanks again for the wisdom and help. I'll shut up now and get back to reading...
