I have managed a few hours to begin the laminates for Jazz's 26, settling on matai and mahogany bands to go with the quilted red gum. I will post pics as this one comes together.

These will be cut and laminated to form the bands around the top and bottom of the body, with laminated and carved caps too.

Oops, will need to fix that, good spotting!

The dye is put through in the same way as the resins are when stabilizing. The block is placed in a vacuum chamber and all air removed from the chamber, meaning all air is removed from inside the wood. the block is immersed in dye, resins, or both, and the vacuum released. the air in the wood cells that is removed by the vacuum is replaced by the dyes and resins when the atmospheric pressure pushes into the block. This can be done multiple times to add several colours to the block with the changing densities inside the timber giving different rates of absorbtion, so different colours in some areas. Hope that makes sense...

Could you make an entire mod using mammoth ivory?

I'm going to call this guy tomorrow and see if he has a chunk large enough intact.
Possible I guess. Is this actually mammoth ivory? I would love to see the source verified as this stuff would have to be a rare discovery?

It's not really all that rare, but I too would like the source verified. He is in Arizona.

Would love to, may not be easy to bore large holes in fossils though...lol. Supply me the material and I will try, but I cannot guarantee success.

He's in Arizona, when I call him, I'm going to ask if I can look at the "tusk chunks", I'm not sure if they are fossilized or just ivory tusk.
Brilliant. What a wonderful material to have in a mod. Very interested for sure!

Looks legit, but would have to be a clean piece with no fractures to allow working without it falling apart. Or having it filled like the Hybrid acrylic blocks?

Indeed, I found other sources for mammoth tusk, but it probably needs to be stabilized with resin, which I'll have done.

I've been fascinated with stag handle knives for 40 plus years. My Dad got me into it:) Would it be possible to do some type of finished stag inlay into each side of a mod without significantly increasing the thickness of the overall mod? Kinda like knife handles for the mod:thumb:
