Pfizer settles Chantix suits for $273 million

Pfizer Inc. has paid up big time to settle lawsuits claiming its smoking-cessation drug Chantix caused serious harm.
In its annual report filed on Feb. 28 with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the pharmaceutical company said it has agreed to settle roughly 80 percent of the more than 2,700 suits claiming Chantix caused suicide and other injuries.

This stuff also causes nitemares and all sorts of deadly things.

LOl, but it was FDA approved, American Heart and Lung Asc. approved, it was one of the silver bullets for nic addiction. It's amazing, damn near every FDA approved silver bullet has side affects similar to or in some cases worse then smoking, but they can't take the time to take a serious look at Ecigs. Maybe it's because they contain anti-freeze........yay BP, BG, BT keep em puffing away.

After the FDA approves a drug it does not claim that it safe. In fact the FDA says that FDA approval is not a guarantee of safety.
Sort of sounds like, we don't know if it is safe.

The FDA doesn't do the testing. They have to rely on the pharmaceutical company to do that. They review the research and test material, but if the pharmaceutical company is blowing smoke up everyone's backside (they'd NEVER do that, would they?!) you can pretty much guess what's gonna happen.

The company that brought Oxycontin to the market lied about it's addictive capability. As a result, thousands of people became addicted to it.

And yet, the product is still on the market. Seems to me the "side effects" are worse than smoking. Smoking takes years to kill. Seems like Chantix can do that very quickly. Why is this an acceptable side effect? the FDA is supposed to be all about protecting public health. How in the world does this drug protect public health when a "side effect" is potential death?

I hate the term "side effect". They're not side effects, they're direct effects. Maybe what the drug is marketed to do is the side effect. Hey, the results men got from early trials of ...... were a side effect, but it's marketed as the direct effect. It's original intent was to lower blood pressure.

Wow I just came upon this thread, cant say I'm surprised but what I am surprised at is why this drug is still on the market? I think just a few days ago I saw a commercial for it. Every time I saw those adds I always thought why would people choose to use this when we have the option of ecigs? Sad and funny at the same time how at the end of so many drug commercials they squeeze in there that oh btw this drug may cause liver, kidney, heart failure thoughts of homicide, suicide, complete central nervous system shutdown, rupturing of the spleen and colon etc etc etc. Sorry if I'm ranting its just despicable and frustrating when the FDA stands behind these drugs that cause more harm than good.
