That was a report about a mod not an ego battery. You can not stack ego batteries. The batteries they are talking about when referring to stacking batteries are a lot bigger and different from the batteries in Egos.

These are some of the type of batteries people stack

As for the exploding Ego I don't think it had anything to do with the fact that it was a knock off. I think it has everything to do with the fact that he used it with a charger that was not compatible. That is just common sense IMO but I guess there are some people who would do it.

I don't know if it just me but I never knew battery mods existed 4 years ago.......

This happens more than you would think on products other than ecigs. I am an IT director and I see people all the time using charges as if, "as long as the charger or end plug fits it will work." Products need a certain amount of mA (milliamps) as they charge esspecially if the product is under load. Like a laptop if it is being charged it is only dawing a minimul amount of power, but under load if the charger is wrong the CPU and other products conntected to the motherboard will start requiring more power. This can create a very unstable environment for the battery. This would be the same as a passthrough cord for an ecig because the ecig is now under load while charging. Remember 1,000 milliamps is 1 amp. The other very important point that many have said is the polarity. This gets very confusing and intense when calculating a data center or server closet for example.

Glad you are ok though and not seriously injured.

The stacking of Li-Ion batteries is the problem. The newer Li-Mn and, I believe Li-Po, batterries can be stacked. It is a problem wherein one battery would tend to discharge at a different rate and then one battery would act as short to the other, causing it to get hot and either leak or explode.

The Li-ion's are much riskier. Li-mn batteries are safer, but there is the potential for an issue when stacking. Using the same pair of batteries decreases the risk - not using an old one with a new one. Vent holes in the mod are an added safety precaution. I think you know this, just adding for newer folk. Yes, Li-mns are safer. I haven't used Li-Pos, I think the good quality ones are ok.

Thanks, meli. I reported it.

Thanks for reporting it jmalone and thanks Meli for suggesting it.

Glad your safe, that's the most important thing. Hopefully this will help someone else. I didn't have my PhD in batteries before I got here either but I asked a million questions and found people here are happy to help and want everyone to have the same great experience vaping as they've had.

When in doubt, ask. And welcome!

The batteries I bought didn't come with a charger, so I'm fumbling around trying to find the correct one for this type of battery. Is this the right one for a 400 mah?

510 420 mAh eGo/Riva/Kgo Fat Batt Charger

Thanks, all! (I certainly don't want to scare anyone away from e-cigs. I just want them to be aware that bad things can happen when you're careless!)

Yes - you need a 420 - 450mah ego charger. Mad Vapes have them cheaper:
eGo 420mAh charger

If you use a wall adapter with it the wall adapter needs to be at least 500mA output.

That should work - generally you want a charger that is less than the rated mAh of the battery. That specific one is 20 maH more than the 400 mAh eGo you have, but with a variance of less than 5%, it probably is OK. I would try to find one that is 350 mAh or less, though, if you want to play on the cautious side... I bought a 200mAh USB style one, can't remember from where. I was going to put in a box mod - that could be perfect for these smaller style eGo batteries.

Edit:
generally you want a charger that is less than the rated mAh of the battery

Or one that can regulate its output. Expensive ones can condition a battery and read the capacity of the battery.

That's it. Ego style just uses these 420mah usb chargers and an usb wall adapter. Make sure the usb wall adapter can output atleast 500mah.
