As we all know, or to those who don't, in about six weeks or so, the heavy hand of the Law will come down hard upon us all. And nothing short of divine intervention will change this. Such is the sad and brutal nature of politics, money and the quest for total power and control. The ignorance that permeates the highest levels of governments.
But fear not, we are who we are. And we do what we do. We know ourselves, we know the stories, we know it works. History has shown time and time again how the suffocating shroud of legislation only serves to fuel an illegal, dangerous yet thriving black market. We have seen this with Prohibition in the States. People get executed for drug-smuggling, but you don't see drug-usage drop to absolute zero overnight do we? If it dropped at all? Prices get higher. Demand is still there, thus the supply. Desperate people are born every second... But I digress.
Who loses in the end? Not us. No no no. Sure the goods that were once easily obtainable become harder to procure. Their prices are marked up 10, 20, 30 times, maybe even more. Yes we pay more. Scalper's prices. But really, the real loser here, is the government. Their tax dollars. Revenue. Look at what happened in the Soviet Union in their last decade. The government lost out billions from black market revenue. And this wasn't just from their comical attempt at banning vodka. It came to a point where many basic consumer goods were only obtainable via the black market due to chronic shortages.
I'm probably preaching to the choir right now, and yes this argument has been beaten like a dead horse and so on and so forth. God I just needed to get it out somehow, especially with a topic like this. Close to our hearts. Our deadly habit we all picked up once upon a time. I'd been using analogues for 8 years. My mom 40 years. Others have their own stories. Others have their own battles.
The law is the law, and as responsible citizens of any country we are obligated to obey. Unfortunately there will be moments in history where as a people, as a majority, as citizens, a line has to be drawn. If it is for something we believe is right for us. Somewhere. And with each day, we trudge on and keep fighting our own battles. To be free of this addiction. To be free, to make our own choices.
