Anybody know? Should i be concerned? They're supposedly new and I've never seen these before, and it's only happening to one of the batteries.

I'm gonna tag the battery guy, maybe he'll see it and answer. @Mooch or @Baditude
If you can hold off using them until you can strip and rewrap them, it might be a good idea.
Just from the picture, it looks like corrosion under the wrap. That would be SCARY stuff...
But they are such ROUND spots...? Perhaps spot welds if removed from a pack?
Meanwhile, if you list everything you know about the batteries, all the info on the wrap, and where they came from, you will get better advise, and faster.
Luck to ya.

They’re pretty common but no one knows what they are. I just can’t say if they are an issue or not.

Hi Mooch. Did you mean you CAN'T say? Not sure what you meant.
Anything under the wraps when stripped? Maybe something on the wrap reacts with metal can.

It could be just condensation trapped under the wrap. I would strip the wrap and inspect the case. If it's corrosion then recycle the cell. If not then clean it, rewrap it, and vape on.

    Tutorial: Re-wrapping a Battery | E-Cigarette Forum

The battery never gets colder than its environment. I’m thinking there should never be any condensation.

Oops...wait...unless just brought in from cold air outside. But, a warm battery would drive out any moisture. It could be oxidation/corrosion from pinholes in the wrap or pinholes in the nickel plating on the can. Or possibly oxidation of residue leftover from the can drawing process.

I've seen this as well, but ONLY on my Sony VTCs, both VTC4 and VTC5.

I thought I saw other threads here where folks said they saw the same thing with Sony batteries?

I haven't used my 18650s in a few months, so I haven't bothered to unwrap and inspect them.

On mine, the liquid bubbles only appear at the top, not down the sides or bottom of the battery. They are liquid. I can run finger along them, and push them around.

They are NOT eliquid in my case. Mine are a pretty dark colored liquid, and I only ever use unflavored (clear) liquid, and there's no way liquid got into the mod that I was using these in. I rotated these Sony's with a pair of Samsung 25Rs and the 25Rs have no liquid inside the wraps.

Strange, but I have seen a thread or two here with others reporting this same issue with Sony batteries.

I've got a bunch of new VTC5As I haven't used yet. If I have the same issue occur with them, I will probably buy Samsungs next time.

This phenomenon (spots) seems to only occur with Sony batteries from what I have seen. If I'm not mistaken, Mooch was able to create the dark spots by puncturing the wrap with a pin, so one might think there is some sort of oxidation reaction occuring with either the plastic wrap or metal can. Possibly a reaction to contact with human skin oils.

I personally wouldn't get upset if my batteries developed the dark spots, but that's just me. :)

Understood, thanks for the feedback. :)

Just weird that it's liquid in my case and many others. If it were dry underneath, I could see the oxidation creating dry dark spots. But the liquid is just plain weird.

I'll continue to use mine (when I need 18650s). We'll see if it continues to get worse or happens to my new ones when I fire up a new pair.

The ones I'm having the liquid spots with currently are VTC4's I had in storage for about a year. They were fine when I first pulled, dated and used them. Over a period of about 6 weeks, I noticed the liquid.

If I were still using 18650s a lot, I would unwrap, clean and rewrap them to see if the issue continued. Not really worth the trouble to me currently as I've been using a steady diet of 2x700s lately.

Maybe since I just got the Basium, I'll pull a new pair of VTC5A and see what happens to them.

    Strange.

Yup, this has been noticed since back in 2014, if not earlier. I've seen the splotches in my VTC3, VTC4, VTC5 and MNKE's. I was concerned and involved in both of the above threads back then and a couple of others. I still have a couple of old VTC5 now that have these marks on them.

The marks present differently, some are really tight small circles like what I see in this thread and some have much smoother edges. I've taken wraps off and found nothing 'growing' under them, and no liquid (pics posted at the time). FWIW, I've been ignoring it since 2014 and nothing bad has happened to me.

I've got no solid answers, just a theory or two. If anyone can figure out for sure what's happening I would love to know. Until then I'm going to continue to watch for updates :)

Rewrap with clear or translucent wraps, keep an eye on them?

I rewrap with clear and slip a small piece of paper inside with text written on it to identify the battery. About 3/4 of the battery is still visible where there is no paper. On batts which splotched with the original wraps, it never happened after rewrapping.

Sounds fairly innocuous, then. Good deal. Probably something simple. Alkaline cleaning solution or something splashed on wraps.
